Also got this popping/cracking noise - and its getting worse as the weeks past. Mine (a late 2016) had a new bottom case and keyboard about two months ago - and the popping noise has started since then.

I will see if ti gets any worse and then maybe take it in to the store and see what they say.

I am not saying this is true, High Sierra fixed, but I have been running this terminal command all day, each time from 20 to 30 minutes. With power connected and without and I haven't had one popping sound. I am wondering if it's just a good day or if High Sierra has corrected something. Anyone else hearing pops after High Sierra? Like I said, it could just be a good day.
High Sierra fixed nothing, my MacBook Pro 15 2016 started popping even when is cold

I figured as much. Just haven’t noticed the popping in sometime. I have been very obsessed with it since I’m trying to decide if I’m keeping it or not. Thanks for your reply

Mine is making very strange "whistling" noises when I press the bottom of the laptop. It even does it when turned off and also when typing on the keyboard with palms pressing on the surface (since the whole thing moves a little bit). Curious what that is, I am bringing it to the service tomorrow..

It took quite some months, three failed repairs at the Apple Premium Reseller, a lot of calls and most of all a lot of patience and waiting, but I finally received my new (actually new, as in: sealed) 15" MacBook Pro.

I know new issues can possibly pop up again after (little) while, but for now I am just tremendously happy. I feel like a little kid, man. So far no issues concerning strange popping/clicking/creaking issues which I had before (nor do I have any keyboard issues - which I had before).

Please note that Apple eventually offered me a 15" MacBook Pro 2017 version, while I initially purchased a 2016 version. That is because I had gotten three repairs already, and Apple decided to take care of things themselves after I called them. If it was just my first repair or so, I should have just gotten a display replacement and it should have been solved - so I have been told.

So in fact I went through quite some trouble and was stuck with a faulty laptop for quite some time as well, but I basically ended up with a newer and slightly "better" device for the same price. Well that is positive! I hope I do not have that much bad luck this time when it comes to the defects, however. And getting the old laptop picked up and swapped with a new one was pretty much horror as well, but oh well. Apple tried to solve matters the best they could, even though it was a problem regarding an external delivery company or something. But their communication was great, and their customer service was extremely friendly and personal and just ... nice? I never expected this from Apple, to be honest, so I am pleasantly surprised. I am even getting a call in a week or so because they want to check if everything is working properly and went well.

I hope you guys get a proper fix as well. Maybe some people call some defects like this nitpicking, but you paid this much for a device so it should function properly as well.

Got mine back from Apple repair with a new display assembly. It opens smoothly and haven’t heard one creak or pop. Fingers crossed.

Hey guys!

After four exhausting months of fighting for my consumer rights given by Austrian legislation the APR where I bought my machine finally gave in and offered me a replacement machine. However I had to fight my way to the head of customer service first to get everything worked out. I also got the APP almost for free since they totally screwed up with the customer service in my case and they wanted to compensate for that.

I was now offered a brand new 2017 model, which I finished setting up today. It is great so far! Imho especially the keyboard feels nicer on this one compared to the 2016 one... Time will tell if the 2017 will also produce the popping sounds after a few months, but so far I am very happy with it. The display hinge feels different on the 2017 one compared to my 2016 one, it seems more rigid which I think is a good sign.

I have used my 2016 machine for a month after the display assembly was replaced and it never popped once, so there might be hope that it fixes the problem. Good luck with your machines!

Mine is getting worse. Much worse.

Also notice that if you press the bottom of the screen area (when opened) - form being the screen (i.e the case side) - then the case/screen is slightly loose and moves in an out with the same sort of noise. This also seems to be getting worse.....

What will the Apple staff say if I take it in with this fault?

My 2017 15" started out by making one single popping noise coming from near the trackpad when it was warming up (per se), and now it's doing it more and more frequently. Sometimes 5,6,7 times every couple of hours. Not sure where to go from here. Other than the random popcorn sounds it's a great machine.

Apple's technical support thingy told me that they are aware of the problem and this is indeed the solution to this problem (at least, the problem I had - not sure if all popping noise issues are completely similar).

Anyway, good to hear you also got a brand new 2017 device. Feels a bit more comforting after everything, in my opinion.

That's also what they told me... They only replaced my machine because they damaged it during the 3rd repair and also had other smaller issues. According to the Austrian law the number of repair attempts one has to allow to the seller is limited. Since I did not want to send it in a fourth time they gave me a new machine.

Thanks! You are right. I think that the 2017 version somehow feels a little bit different as a whole... I don't know how to describe it... It somehow feels more "mature" mechanically, especially certain parts like the keyboard and the hinge.

doesn't mean the 2017 model wouldn't start popping in the near future

My 2016 15" is popping on a regular basis. The loudest when I first open it after a while, and then frequently after that. This is when it is not under load which I thought was interesting. Waiting until wedding editing season is over before getting it repaired. Glad I bought AppleCare.

I had a 2016 13" MBP and it started popping right away. I ended up returning it mainly because the sound was driving me crazy. I've had a 2017 13" MBP for over a month and a half and not gotten a single pop out of it. Mechanically it feels much better to me and I'm happy with it.

Yep, exactly what I had! I showed this to them yet they still decided to swap out the logic board... odd. Anyway, took it back and they replayed the display and all is good!

Be carfull with replacements. I had an issue with my iMac and they replaced it, his words were “oh you will get the updated processor that is faster”.

Silly me never checked the specs till about 6 months later and whilst it was a “faster speed” they replaced an i7 with an i5 processor.

I heard the new MacBooks they have still problem with screen coating, after 5 years from Retina debut, this is insane

I had to look up what you meant, but jeez, I did not even know this could happen! Is it always as bad as the pictures show? How do you know the new ones still have it?

Anyone else had a machine changed out for this?? I guy at work had his replaced - but I'm not sure if I can be bothered for the sake of the popping noise - albeit the lower rear of the screen does seem to be getting increasingly "loose" and I can replicate the noise at will.....

I had the same issue on my 2016 model. They fixed mine! Much better now. But still, it is not living to my expectations. For example right now I am typing by having the machine in my lap, and the screen is shaking while I am typing. Very frustrating. I don't recommend the new 2016/2017 MBP. The best one is still from 2015, maybe they come with better in 2018. But as we know from Apple lastly, after Steve, they have launched products with a lot of bugs, hardware and software.

I have the same popping sound on my MBP 13 early 2015. Totally random when it happens. Wondering what the cost will be if I decide to send it in for service.
