the more I look at it

It sure doesn't look durable. And the taste in anemic colors is perplexing. But then the iPod Nano's current colors are pretty weak too. I'm not liking this so far :(

Yeah, it doesn't look durable. And the colors, I don't get the Neon/day-glo etc. choices. I'm not a fan. If this was the only iPhone available, I wouldn't own a smart phone.

Any uniform design looks better than iPhone 5, as it is more minimalistic. Iphone 5 is just embarrassing in 2013. Only 4" screen, back divided in different materials for super bad design with seams everywhere and so on... Only bought it because of Apples ecosystem, but will move on if not at least a 4.7" screen in next update.

You people are simply hilarious. You posted the same thing about the iPad mini, didn't you?

Don't forget how almost everyone said that the leaked iPhone 4 design wasn't clearly not "Apple" like... that it wasn't curved or ergonomic... that it looked too chunky and industrial ... too close to a Zune.

Now they love the way it looks and any other look is not "Apple like".

Perhaps the silliest thing of all, is that the majority of people will throw a case on it anyway, and you won't be able to tell them apart.

If you save $200-$300 on the price, who cares what it looks like under the case?

I wonder what they might call this thing to differentiate it from the existing iPhone?

hell no you've ipad mini if you want let's keep the iphone with 4 inch we don't need more then that on a phone

I personally don't carry an iPad in my pocket everywhere I go.

The level of disparity is getting increasingly glaring which is how phones like the GS4 are able to gobble up chucks of mindshare and market share. It certainly isn't the brilliant software and ecosystem.

I just want a new iPhone, but looking at those pics I'd rather pay more for the 'normal' iPhone than get the cheap one.

BTW - saw a smart phone the other day and it had a 6.1" screen, yes it was a phone and not a tablet. it was ridiculously huge but now I kinda wish Apple would up the iPhone 5s to 4.5-5" screen.

I mostly use apps on my iPhone like GMail and Facebook, and I don't know that a bigger display would improve the experience.

However, I can see where a big, higher res display helps web browsing. And maps.

What are the other benefits of a large display?

If it does not match up to the front it will look silly. If you are going to use color the entire phone needs to blend together.

I still think the back of the iPhone 4s looks better then the five because it is one solid color on the back.

Personally I find all content to be more engaging, immersive and interactive on a larger display.

It's true for my living room TV, true for my desktop, true for my MBA, and is equally true for smartphones. There's overkill, sure. The Samsung Note line is way over the top, but the GS4 does a good job of staying wieldable, and pocketable with a display that is a full inch larger with vastly more pixels than the iPhone 5.

No displays are not everything, but the iPhone 5 screen was barely an incremental improvement over the 4S, and now we are at the point where it's dropping to mid tier status among smart phones as competitors are really pushing display tech and the market is noticing and becoming less forgiving of Apple because the level of disparity is getting increasingly blatant.

How did this happen?

Historically, every time we've seen this many part leaks so close to August/September, they've been genuine parts. Think bigger iPhone screen, different screw holes, etc etc. If the past is anything to go by, this is happening. When Steve was alive he wouldn't have let this happen. The whole reason Apple stuff is so expensive is because they make expensive stuff. Steve always said "we don't make junk products." However with Tim and his driving costs down and profits up mentality, it seems the direction towards a lower end product to accompany the higher end is a real possibility. It's a competition killer. A lot of people I know with the awful plastic samsungs have them because they are available on much lower line rental deals. Apple could take over that market with iOS in a cheaper box.

I know that display size is a contentious issue, but is there a general consensus in the upper size limit for a mobile phone?

I see few people using a Galaxy Note, for example, but the Galaxy S3 is fairly well accepted and it has a 4.8" display. Nexus 4 and HTC One both use a 4.7" display.

This suggests to me that 5" is the upper limit. The 5.5"+ on the note makes the phone look unwieldy.

I plan to buy my first smartphone later this year and my decision is setup up on the iPhone. I am not interested in a watered down/hand me down experience. I want the real deal, yes, it cost a little bit more, but its worth it. Especially with how long I keep phones. Going 5 years so far with my current Nokia feature phone.

You are either totally ignorant or joking. An iPhone doesn't last 5 years, it get old after 6 month (due to competition), after a year, a new model is released, after two years it feels bulky or slow compared to competition and after three year Apple stops support with new OS updates making it obsolete.

I hope you have to wait for a long long time. I would hate to have to look like of those dodgy android brick holders.

I see it coming as not everyone has tiny, child hands.

----------

If plastic iPhone is 16Gb+plastic back, there you can have justification to reduce the price by $150

If it's only reduced by 150.00 then they will never accomplish getting into the market here in mexico, the 5 is about 825.00 and the price would still be 675.00 for the plastic one. That is only going from extremely unaffordable to very unaffordable.

I didn't know iPad Mini is being sold BIG time.

It's supposedly on track to bypass the regular ipad, I would consider that big time.

The ipad mini is not a phone, but since phone capabilities do not matter tiny hands people have the ipod nano.

My guess is that this low cost iPhone will never be sold stateside. This is for Asia primarily where money is tight in many areas. This is an opportunity to grab some of that market share.

Latin america also if the price is right.
