From the hotspot how far does the coverage stretch? If there was a hotspot 0.1 miles away would I be able to receive it?

Thanks

Its unlikely, but it really depends on what type of technology they are using.

European WiFi range is generally int he order of 70-100m max in clear air. Add walls and trees etc and that starts to drop quite quickly.

The McDonalds announcement today BTW is the service being provided by The Cloud in all 1200 locations.

We are getting a bit of a rotor together in the office to help on this (and a few other) forums - so we should be on it a bit more frequently soon (my time on here is a bit hit and miss). But I am glad our help is well received - itd not always that way on forums.

BTW:

  • we are making some changes to the hotpost locator in the next few weeks. We have found some sites that are no longer live are still in the database (this mostly affects some phone boxes we have closed). We have also found nearly 2000 of our locations are not showing up in the locator - so they are going on pronto!!! We currently have c.9k locations in the UK, but normally only publicise 7.5k - thats changing!
  • free trials - we used to offer them on some tariffs. But this price is very, very low so we didnt introduce a trial. However I will have a think on what I can do for you guys... leave it with me

BTW finally got my hands on a touch for myself on Wednesday - what a great device! downloading an album over WiFi takes about 2 minutes from pressing the itunes logo, finding what you want and then downloading it. Cant see myself ever using my Macbook for music again (with the exception of downloading podcasts) - I can do it all on the touch. Obviously I'm also loving being able to do it from the station platform in the morning, rather than at home!

Thanks

Owen

As I am in the centre of Cambridge I doubt I will be able to receive the network 0.1 miles away. What do people think about the BT Fon announcements.

Well I've concluded that I'm going to Cancel my Cloud connection :(, for the simple reason that it's not available anywhere I go. The coverage is really poor.

The main places I can see it is near McDonald's (Which I guess will be free soon)

BT Openzone coverage is available everywhere in Birmingham! As I said else where I won't be going with them either as they are too expensive (maybe that will change with the Fon deal?) I guess I will have to do without.

I know you are fixing your list but I still feel like you where offering coverage you just don't have. I'm sure you do have 9000 out of the 10000 commercial hotspots, but in Birmingham as least that does not seem to be the case?

It would not be so bad if I could use my cloud account on BT openzone, but I can not. Which is weird as Openzone customers can use the cloud and t-mobile O2 etc can use Openzone.

Oh well! Thanks go to the cloud user on this forum for listening to my problems, but I guess you are not in a position to really help. We need coverage not removal of non working hotspots from the locator list.

I've had exactly the same problem in Manchester - everywhere I go BT openzone pops up - but no cloud - which is why I have also cancelled the service. I'm glad to see they are cleaning the wifi zone checker up but too little too late I'm afraid.

Yeah odd since Manchester is a cloud wifi 'hotzone'

I can't help thinking they shot themselves in the foot with the mcdonalds thing.. for many the only hotspot with cloud access will be mcdonalds.. and that will soon be free. So the cheap deal suddenly doesn't look so great..

Well I think the final straw was when I was sat 20m from a supposedly Cloud enabled phone box - according to the website - I now see that this phone box has been removed from the listings. This phone box was right near work and was one of the main reasons I signed up for the service. Sat in the same place I could pick up BT Openzone perfectly.... grrrr ! I also get a BT Openzone signal in the middle of the office on the 5th floor... what's going on Cloud? - come on, surely you can do better!

I'm sad to see Manchester seems to have less than advertised coverage too. Is London any better?

I get a BT openzone connection in the toilet in our office which is in the middle of building. It's just a shame that they are mega expensive, maybe the cloud can be useful and prompt BT to produce a better pricing structure ( 11.99 for 250 mins (12 mins a day)) is no good!

You know whats the totally bonkers about all this...?

Looking at the BT openzone listing for Birmingham you see that most of their hotspots are provided via somekind of roaming partner, which in a lot of cases is listed as "the cloud" Theres not actually that many BT ones? So, just what is going on I don't know?

Are the cloud providing BT openzone users access but not their own? Are the hotspot directories just all crap? Have BT rolled out some secret network that they don't even list on their own site? Or are those one of two listed BT openzone hotspots using some kind of nuclear reactor to increase their range over a few miles?

I used The Cloud last year at Mac Expo. It was OK for coverage in the corner of the venue near the cafe, but if you strolled too far the signal dropped.

I would imagine the same is similar with all hotspots, I am not technical, but with nothing in the way, I would say 100 to 200m would be about right. Anyone have any definitive answer to this?

FWIW, this hotspot in North London seems to be completely non-functioning, as it doesn't show up as an available wireless network to connect to. I'd find the enabling of this hotspot very useful because I commute from Enfield Lock station (which is right next door, hence the pub's name) four days a week. If I could get a Cloud connection it might well tempt me to sign up for the service, as I've been doing a lot of waiting for buses and trains there recently!
