Plus, my motivation to clean out some things is at an all-time high since the wife and I are expecting. :)
One piece of (unsolicited) advice…

I helped my wife by changing diapers. We had a changing table, but one day my son decided to twist a certain way unexpectedly and he almost rolled off the table. So after that, I changed him on the floor (with the changing pad underneath).

It is extremely difficult, if not impossible for a person to fall off the floor and hurt themselves. My son is 16 now, about to be 17, so I guess it worked.

Congrats!

Duly noted, and thanks! Although, with her receiving genes from my wife and myself, the odds are decent she may be able to find a way to fall off the floor :p

I'm thinking of joining Club 17 with a 2007 MacBook Pro, however I'm worried that GPU failure seems inevitable, according to what I've read online. If anyone can share their experiences with 8600M GT-equipped models, it would be appreciated.

I’ve had several 15 and 17 inch models from that time… It seems that the GPU’s on the A1226 series (2007) are slightly less prone to failure than the A1260 laptops (early 2008.) I have seen both fail though, and of course the 2008 gains a multi touch trackpad, the ability to be made to run up to Catalina, and a newer processor architecture.

It's really worth it!
Once my last 17" MBP has died from GPU-failure I will either go for the appropriate soldering equipment or a plane to meet @dosdude1 for help ... :D

It would be great to get a rundown of all the equipment he used. The revised GPUs are cheap enough, but some of the other elements required seem prohibitively costly if you aren't doing these repairs en masse. I could be wrong, however...

Well, I put in a bid for an '07 17" and it arrived today, in excellent condition (aside from a few bumps) with the original packaging. The lister didn't mention that the machine has an upgraded 4GB of RAM and matte hi-res display (1920x1200), which is a fantastic surprise, and very much welcomed considering I'll be using it for work.

It's a dream to have all of this real estate. The design is classic in every sense of the word. Performance-wise, internet browsing/YouTube is fine and runs without a hitch; I haven't had the opportunity to test anything else.

What's curious is that there's an Apple service sticker on the bottom, dating to 2010. I'll have to check if the GPU has been replaced. I'm happy to finally own a machine I've wanted since 2007. Update - the GPU has been replaced.

Check if there's a green dot sticker on the RAM slots. If so, you definitely have a revised GPU and are golden.

Welcome to the club :) Images aren't showing though.

How well do the 07/08 MBPs run El Capitan? I'm a bit concerned about RAM, but it would be useful to have more recent versions of Adobe CC.

I posted here back in late 2018 when my wife got me a 2005 PowerBook G4 17" for Christmas, it was the biggest, baddest laptop I grew up wanting, along with using Mac OS X back in the day when I was stuck on XP and later moved to Linux for a long time. Sadly, the laptop didn't last long as my charger broke, and I didn't know it was the charger and then she got left to gather dust - the laptop, not my wife, we know have a lovely energetic 16 month old daughter together - and life got in the way, all of that. During lockdown in the UK I got her up and running with a different charger, and now I've finally gotten round to putting 2GB of RAM in the old girl. I have a new HDD on its way that should be both larger and quicker, once that's done I'll be posting some fun shots of her doing...something.

It's been funny reading your past posts here from everyone, especially the graphics issue on the original MacBook Pros. My PowerBook had the classic loose display connection cable issue. And it was a nightmare for me to get fixed, and it the end I 100% bodged it, I have little 3M command strip pieces - you know the things you use to hang stuff without nails and such - on the logic board ensuring the perfect angle to connect the display cable to the logic board. It looks funky - but fairly neat - but IT WORKS. I've not had a display issue since I did the fix, and I've moved it all over the house, used it on my lap, on the table, all of that and I've had no issues. Finally getting to do the upgrades and tweaks to it that I wanted to almost two years ago now!
