If it says that "Washington D.C." is covered under At&T, does that strictly mean just D.C. or could the coverage leak into Northern Virginia, since they're next to each other?

Well, at least AT&T likes the Piedmont Urban Crescent of North Carolina. (Charlotte, Greensboro, W-S, Raleigh, Durham) I guess I'm sticking with the blue globe company and my grandfathered unlimited data.

Ah, I just did a quick search. The Internets says that they won't turn it on until 2013 and that both them and Verizon are doing it.

According to the coverage map yes (some of) NoVA is covered as is some of MD.

Sprint really dropped the ball by going with the failed WiMax system, which is why they are so behind in LTE deployment. Hopefully they'll catch up in the next couple of years; this looks really bad for them.

At the speed AT&T is moving, Sprint could pass up AT&T in a year.

One thing to note here is that Verizon's 3g is worse speed than AT&T's 3g (AT&T also has "4g" which is even and even faster 3g). If you only have LTE from Verizon in your home area, go with them. If you also have AT&T LTE, the choice is not quite as clear. (I still have unlimited AT&T and LTE coverage so I'm staying with them)

this map is incomplete. Im on AT&T and columbus, ga has LTE, but its not indicated on the map

Fortunately, I live in an area that is well covered by both AT&T and Verizon. Verizon definitely has a larger presence in the state (NC), but for my travel purposes, it's about equal.

I actually am on AT&T and have ordered an iPhone 5 on their service. That being said, I have a Verizon 4G iPad because I believe Verizon has the superior network........for pure data. I personally believe that AT&T is the better choice for voice + data. Falling back to EVDO on VZW is not an option. While I entirely admit that VZW destroys AT&T with LTE coverage, I believe the overall coverage of (relatively) high speed data (3G+) favors AT&T.

Combine that with simultaneous voice and data (I may be the only person in North America that is dependent on this, but I use it frequently), and my unlimited AT&T data, I stuck with AT&T.

Either way, I figure i will have coverage with ONE of the providers if push comes to shove. I will admit I am very jealous of that Verizon LTE coverage map, though!

My thoughts exactly. After 5 years of AT&T, I switched to Verizon last year for the iPhone 4S. It was shocking how slow Verizon's 3G EVDO network is. I truly hope everyone leaving AT&T for Verizon doesn't wind up on Verizon's 3G network frequently or I think they're really likely to regret their decision to switch.

Sprint deployed wimax because LTE was not ready, and they HAD to deploy on the spectrum they bought or risk losing it. It would have been very interesting if sprint was able to wait and deploy LTE instead of having to resort to WiMax.
Good thing is that they will still be making money off the network for a good amount of time..

I believe in AT&T's latest enhancement in Wash/DC, LTE was expanded out to Dulles and included MontCo and PGCo in MD.

I'm not honestly to concerned with LTE. AT&T's speeds on 3G network are just fine.

Will I enjoy LTE when it's turned on? Sure. Am I shocked that Apple pulled of the great battery life with LTE.

For someone that travels, Verizon is the obvious choice. Not only that, but I have personally had terrible experience with AT&T 3G coverage while on major interstates throughout the US. With Verizon, I can't remember the last time I lost signal.
