I'd wait as well. the competition is heating up with all of these phones so you figure apple is gonna pull something out of their bag of tricks. don't get me wrong i LOVE my 3gs since i upgraded from a 2g but its a different time now compared to when i bought it in june.

I use a 2G unlocked and a 3gs. The 3gs has much worse battery life than the 2g. Thats just a fact, data source doesnt matter because I am always on wifi with both devices using verizon mifi data. Its just a fact. My 2g can last me 2 solid days of use and I've owned 2 3g's and now a 3gs and the battery has been subpar on all of them.

the 3gs though is smaller and lighter and has a more sleek, new feel to it. It is also marginally more reliable when palying games and surfing the net etc. so take that for what it's worth, about $0.02

OP, I'd honestly try and hold on until June. You don't seem like you're particularly hurting for a new phone right now. The speed difference with the 3G is pretty large, yes, but compared to what a new model will likely offer you in six months, it's probably worth the wait. As long as your 2G is functioning properly, you're good as gold.

(And honestly, 3G is overrated. It's faster when you can get it, but I find that for 90% of my usage I end up leaving the phone on EDGE. It has faster ping times and plenty enough bandwidth for Twittering, IMing, etc, as well as better battery life. The only time you'll really feel 3G is when you're loading web pages.)

True from my experience the 2g batter is better. however, I have gps and non stock apps as well as jailbreak specific extras and the 2g would take forever to load these. the 3gs doesn't care what apps you throw at it as it takes off several significant seconds to load apps. my friends 3g takes almost a 90 seconds to load a gps, mine takes 10 seconds (navigon). huge difference.

If you really feel the need to upgrade now, then you certainly can. Then whenever the new iPhone is released, you can sell the 3GS on eBay, and use the money you get from that sale to fund your purchase for the new iPhone on eBay or CL.

But if I were you, I would probably wait. As long as your 2G doesn't have any major problems, and it's working fine, then I'm sure you will be rewarded with waiting for another six months or so. Although for me, it would be quite hard not to find a way to spend a $200 gift card to Apple.

I'm having the same dilemma, except I don't currently have an iPhone. I'm currently using a Blackberry Bold (9000), but want to get an iPhone to use as well. I'll be paying full price for the iPhone so I'm not sure whether I should get one now or wait until June/July to see what the rumoured iPhone 4 has to offer.

If you're paying full price now, then I'd just go ahead and get the 3GS, since you'll still be saving your upgrade for the next time.

June is still 6 months away. That can be a long, long time.

I had the 2g, and I sold it a few weeks ago, and bought the 3g. I should have gotten the 3gs, but because of lack of funds I didnt. My old one was falling apart, and I needed a new phone. So I did, and if they do unveil a new iPhone, yeah I will be sad and kicking myself for a few days (if I like the new one better that is.) but in the end of it all, I love the 3g, and I waited a while for it, I am sure waiting on the 4th gen won't hurt either. :)

How long is a few weeks? If you are still within the 30 days i would return the 3g, pay the 10 dollar fee and buy a 3gs for 100 extra + tax.

The 2g has a larger capacity batter ~200mah. Plus without the 3g the battery drains a lot slower. 3G drains your battery like twice as fast as edge which is why you have a disable option. Of course the 2g has a slower cpu which again helps it save battery life.

With that being said the more ram + higher cpu speeds and smaller capacity battery are totaly worth it because the loading is just soo much faster. Not only that but even web pages load faster OVER 3G. Unless the web site is very long it will never checker box either. The magnetic compass is a nice feature too.

IMO if the next iphone gets a higher resolution screen, a larger battery and a new camera that would be golden. I really dont expect another hardware upgrade any time soon (ram or cpu) which is why i bought the 3gs. Like i said if you dont have a iphone period the 3gs is totally worth the money but if you already have a iphone you can probably wait until this june.

I would, but I don't have another 100 bucks to spend on a phone. I am quite happy with my 3g so far. Its not really that big of a deal for me. I never used the full 8g in my 1st gen, so the memory is not a problem. :) Im pretty satisfied at the moment.

So I got a $200 Apple gift card for Christmas that's just burning a hole right through my pocket and my original plan was to use it to buy the 3GS. I still love my original IPhone but I had been planning on updating since the 3GS came out but was short on funds. Now it's mid-cycle and I'm just imagining how bummed I'll be when they unveil the new IPhone in June and it is a markedly better upgrade then the 3GS was (is). Also I'll be using the AT&T subsidy if I buy now, so I'll have to wait 2 years for my next upgrade (I'm not a big tech flipper on Ebay).

Also I know there's an Apple event in a month to likely unveil the new tablet and maybe there will be an price reduction/capacity bump for the Iphone thrown in as well. My 2G still works (albeit there's a small crack in the bottom of the screen) and I could probably go 6 more months with it no problem but that's six more months with a slower processor and much slower data speeds. If I had the 3G I would almost assuredly wait since it's mid-cycle but having the original Iphone makes this a harder question.

I'm really torn and maybe I would be better off just waiting, but the longer I wait, the more I become a sucker for buying an end-of-cycle product if I eventually decide to get the 3GS. And let's face it, there is a psychological aspect when buying technology where a person needs to be assured that what they're buying is the newest and best (for a couple of months at least). I'm not even someone who is that caught up in needing the newest and best because I feel like it's a battle that you can't win and there's better ways to spend money, so I'm really more concerned with making a prudent/intelligent decision. And the problem is compounded because technically I won't be spending any "real" money, but still that $200 is almost real money because being a IPhone and Mac user, I will obviously be spending money at an Apple store at some point in the not too distant future.

So should I pull the trigger or wait?

(And yes, I know this question get's asked a million times a day and I've read many of the other threads on the subject)

Don't upgrade.

I've been with my iPhone 2G for over 2 years now and I'm fine with it. The only couple reasons I ever thought about upgrading to the 3GS are: the non recessed headphone jack (really ****ing tired of not being able to use standard headphones or use my phone at a party), better camera, better speed. I can live with these three things for another 6 months. The two phones are essentially the same thing when it comes to everyday use, one is just a little better in every way. I'm assuming the next iPhone upgrade will be huge, considering how much footing Android has been getting the past couple of months.

i feel your pain buddy. i'm in exactly the same boat. i've got the original iphone unlocked and on vodafone, my contract is up, i have a xmas present to cash in and tempted with the 3GS on vodafone released on 14th Jan.

What do you expect the next iPhone to be? The 3GS already has a faster cpu then the droid with equal ram. Add a higher resolution screen and camera and the hardware becomes equal. Hardware wise the only thing revolutionary would be the screen that can create ridges so you can feel the keyboard. Everything else can be achieved with a software update of the OS.

Of course I don't know what the next update will be but it certainly will include elements that software alone can't provide. Every iPhone upgrade so far has provided something the old ones couldn't, and so far it's been essentially the same body with no revolutionary hardware updates. Given that other manufacturers are finally catching up with the iphone or getting close (there was nothing alone the lines of a Pre, Droid, Nexus One, etc a year ago) Apple is going to have to step up their game. Better screen and camera seem obvious, I'm excited to see what else they'll bring about.

Id say hold out. Thats what im doing. I am using my 16gb Original iPhone until the new one comes out. As we also get closer to the release date of the new iPhone, we should have a clue to what it will or wont come with.

The point i was trying to make was that if 3G, MMS(ya i know jailbreak), Faster Cpu, More Ram, Better camera, Camcorder, Storage Space and, compass arent good enough for you then odds are you wont be happy with the next iPhone.

hey man wait for the January 27th apple event,if there is no iphone upgrades whatsoever than go ahead and buy it,enjoy it, and I would strongly prefer you jailbreak it,we all know there is a new iphone this June so if you wanna still get it than sell your 3GS(you can prolly sell it on ebay for at least $400)and buy the new one, problem solved,if I were in your shoes I would do the same thing.

I agree with your thoughts on the screen and that get's me back to my feeling that despite some under the hood and cosmetic adjustments, it's really still the same phone as the one that they released at the original launch. This might be overstating it a little bit but every time I look at or play with someones 3G or 3GS I don't feel like my measly 2G is really that inferior.

I dunno, maybe once I own the 3GS I'll realize everything I've been missing. Anyone else with a 2G feel the same way?

I had a bad year so I decided to treat myself and upgrade my 2G to a super shiny 3GS. I returned it in a week.

Yeah, it had 3G (really very good 3G) and yeah the settings app opens way fast, and the camera was not bad and GPS was nice to have but it felt like the same phone.

I really expected that after a few days use I'd pick up my old 2G and find it unbearable or something but it just felt like I'd spent £440 on something I already owned. It shaved a second, if that, off my app opening times.

I'm hoping they do something to the OS and the casing to make it feel different next time round. I can't justify spending that much money on a phone that doesn't feel like it's really moved on. The only thing I can really say for it is that it had the nicest video camera I've ever seen on a phone, that's it. I've not missed the 3GS at all.

well, you waited this long thru 2 new phone unveilings...3G, and 3GS and didn't bite.
If you get a 3GS, you'd probably be unfazed by whatever they roll out this year like you were for the last 2...

On the other hand, I'd wait until your 2G is just about dead, or unusable and decide at that point.

We are expecting the new iPhone to be released this summer, right? I know there's an Apple event at the end of Jan - is there any chance they'll be releasing a new iPhone then? Because I'd hate to buy a 3GS now & have them release the 4th gen iPhone sooner than the summer. Lol.

We all know that Apple updates the Iphones around summer time.

after having used my new 3GS for a week or so i really regret not buying it sooner. it functions/performs like the iphone should have when it was first released. the speed differences may be minor to some, but they are HUGE to someone like myself (constantly on my phone all day, uses multiple apps). overall i am extremely happy i took the plunge.
