I'm "productive" enough during the week. In the evenings, I want to unwind and enjoy myself. Americans are overworked as it is, so don't tell me I need to be more productive! Your comments above once again prove your ignorance on the evolving demographics of gamers. Gaming is no different than any other hobby, including your penchant for amateur photography.

Survey: Average U.S. Gamer Age is 35; 40% are Women

Women now comprise 40% of U.S. video game players, while the average age of an American gamer has risen to 35, according to a survey conducted by Ipsos MediaCT for game industry trade group the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

The survey found that 65% of U.S. households play computer and video games, and 38% own a video game console.

With the growing number of female gamers, the survey found that women age 18 or older now represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (33%) than boys age 17 or younger (18%).

"This new data underscores the fundamental principle that computer and video games are a mainstream entertainment form, which captures the imagination of every segment of our society," said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA.

"No longer is there a stereotypical gamer. With deeper market penetration and the broadening of our audience base, video games have incorporated themselves into America's cultural and social fabric."

Definitely wanna chime in here and say thanks to Macbook82 for defending what amounts to nothing more than anyone else's downtime or hobby. Most people watch about 2 hours a night watching TV. Lots of people can read a new book every week. Going out to the movies and renting movies is a billion dollar business. Some people build model cars. Others like to catch-up on sports or what the "big game" every other day. Some people like to work on their cars, and others like to decorate their house or work in the garden.

But, it seems like every time someone over 16 wants to play a few hours of games each week, they're "wasting their time" or not being productive, instead choosing to be lazy. It gets on my nerves. I don't drop 40 hours a week in front of the TV. Nevertheless, I play two or three hours of games every few days, and I still manage to keep a good GPA in college, work and pay bills, have a GF, and keep a social life. :)

I thought long and hard about getting a uMBP over a uMB for portable gaming. Ultimately though, it just doesn't make sense. The extra cost and heft of the system do not outweigh the benefits of a mid-range discrete GPU just for gaming. I'm going to graduate school soon and settled on the uMB, and I'm very pleased with the decision. Don't let people tell you the pro isn't that much bigger than the 'book, because it is a significant difference in size, especially if you're going to be taking it to a lot of classes. It's literally the difference between fitting and not fitting on one of those little desks.

Also, the 9400m GPU is fairly decent and will run many games around medium graphic settings. If you need the latest and greatest (like Crysis) then just buy a desktop PC or game on an xBox. The Pro's extra cost, decreased portability, and heat issues just don't make it the best for a portable system.

That's not to say the Pro is a bad buy, it's just that it's a little more a desktop replacement than a truly portable machine.

Oh and to respond to someone above, I did 4 years of college pre-med, and I found plenty of time to game ;). My gaming was on an N64 mostly though. Smash Brothers and Mario Kart 64 were incredible! Oh, and of course some CS and other things on the laptop.

You pretty much summed up every Monday of my life for the last year or so of college. My roommates and I play those games religiously every Monday. N64 is the greatest system of all time IMO.

I can't really add much to this or say it any better, so I'll just chime in with: I agree. I'm not an avid gamer by any means, but I don't think it's any worse a hobby than fixing up old cars, building model planes, or posting on Macrumors. Telling gamers to "grow up" says more about you than it does gamers - clearly you need to do some growing up yourself, and stop judging others.

N64 is my favourite console of all time. Between GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, MarioKart, and Zelda, what more could you need or want? Except maybe the ability to have more than four players in Death Match... heh.

Ah yes, N64. I miss freshman year.. we played goldeneye practically every night.

Ocarina of Time was my life-stealer. I say, forget building a gaming rig, buy some cheap desktop and run an N64 emulator. Save money, and indulge in nostalgia.
