Bah, I just had to update to 4.0.1. The freaking Mail bug was driving me crazy.

Yea what exactly is the mail bug. I keep getting random messages that have like a day of 09/69 with no sender and no message but im unable to delete the message also. They eventually go away after a while.

I had the same mail bug. Basically your mail icon shows new messages but when you open mail, nothing is there. Not sure why it was happening but its all better on 4.0.1.

Ah - that's what I had too so I was hoping that would be fixed. I'm still going to hold off on updating though until a jb is released.

There is no evidence that Apple has made any changes to the Mail application in this release. The only thing that changed was the signal bar formula and the signal bar images.

what the heck are you talking when you mention "blobs" or "shsh"?
i don't remember having to worry about these on my 3g.

i've already upgraded to 4.0.1. am i unable to jailbreak now?

If I have a new bootrom 3GS, currently on 3.1.3 and Spirit JB, should I upgrade to 4.0.1 to get those SHSH on file? Or should I just wait...

You do not need to upgrade to get your SHSH on file. There are two ways to get your SHSH on file:

1) Since you are jailbroken, if you chose "Make My Life Easier" in Cydia, your SHSH are already on file.

2) Download TinyUmbrella, which will allow you both to get your SHSH on file and to store a copy locally.

Neither of these methods require you to be on any particular firmware.

does the shsh files mean that we no longer can restore to older firmwares? even if we had a 3g iphone and wanted to go to say 2.x?

3G phones do not use signed firmwares prior to iOS 4.0. SHSH are irrelevant for 3G phones before that firmware version.
