Hmmm... I've read the exact opposite. From what I know he was either banned or kicked off of the dev team and is seen by the jb community as extremely cocky and usually not good on his word. I've even read that he announced a hack for the PSP that is almost 8 months late now

Not saying you are wrong, just that I've heard the exact opposite...

All that to say, Ill believe it when I see it.

He did release spirit as promised.
I wouldn't doubt him much, he does seem to have the dev teams backing.

Does anybody know if a working unlock exist while we wait for the jb?

Ive seen a couple of companies advertising it for delivery now, but they wont reply to my mails...?:(

I'll be trying out this jailbreak on my iPod Touch before running it on my iPhone 4. I'll also probably wait to see if Apple & AT&T really do have these periodic "updates" that will disable jailbreaks and unlocks.

Thats geohot.

However, the iphonehacks.com write up says the opposite of what I've read, which is fine - I guess I don't really care, Im just confused about the nature of who is in and who is out - who to trust and so on so forth.

In the old days of JB if you listened to the wrong person you would get stuff on a baseband or firmware for a while, so I guess I'm still just very conscious of that still :)

Don't even pay attention to those "companies" - search the forums and see how many people have gotten ripped off by them.

Do yourself a favor and just wait on it :)

Can you give us a link to what you are referring to - would be interested to see where that line of thinking is from (not a snarky comment, just curious)

As far as I know, AT&T have no way of 'updating' your phone w/o you initiating it yourself. I know a lot of people are worried about AT&T banning accounts, but they'd have to ban such a wide swath of their market that it would only hurt them. PLUS AT&T is waaaay to busy trying to figure out why they are 3 years behind every other carrier in the world as far as infrastructure and technology are concerned.

AT&T reminds me a lot of that idiot kid that ended up in all of my group assignments in college.

Well the whole point of 3G is to make it think you're in wifi, so I would say FaceTime should work anywhere once jailbroken and 3G installed.

Giggity giggity goo

This. :D

For those who jailbroke with Spirit before, how easy is it to use compared with, say, blackra1n? I'm just curious. I just got done restoring and then re-jailbreaking and unlocking my 3GS for the person who bought it from me on ebay over the weekend, so I'm wondering what I'm in for on the next one.

Look at it from a logical POV, if someone jailbroken & unlocked their phone, put in a mSIM (or cut their current SIM) from another carrier, how is AT&T suppose to send OTA updates to it?

It doesn't necessarily have to come from AT&T. Push notifications come from Apple's servers, right? Why couldn't Apple send these updates?

Just to be clear, I don't think that these updates are for real, but I still don't trust Apple or AT&T enough to say that I'm certain that they'd never do anything like this. And that's the reason I'd wait a little while after the jailbreak's release before using it on my phone. It won't kill me to wait a little while.

Yea, Geohot is the one you were thinking of.

Comex and the DevTeam do work closely together.

yup - see previous comments - figured it out right after I asked that question - but you do win a prize for being the 5th person to tell me :) just play'n :)

It's as simple as the click of the mouse really. Just download the app, plug in your device, click the button that says jailbreak, wait for device to reboot and you are good to go. That was my first go at jb and it could not have been simpler or easier. Hope that answers your question.

I didn't tell you were wrong, I simply agreed with your correction. Relax.

And like you, I will comment when and where I choose, same option you have.

Wasn't GeoHot's hack for the PS3 and not PSP? PSPs have been hacked for a long time now...

Plus, I think he has no plans on Jailbreaking the iPhone 4... although I recall hearing something about pwn4life, which lets you jailbreak any future updates from apple... I might be wrong.
