I'm sad they've had to go back to userland jailbreaks.
Apparently from what I know, userland jailbreaks are always disabled by Apple in the next OS update, whereas bootrom (is that right?) jailbreaks are permanent and forever do-able.
You can thank Geohot for that move.
Personally, I'll accept either cause I know how to not "accidentally" update to every release.

Why waste a bootloader JB when you can still JB a device by using userland jailbreaks? That wouldnt make any difference to you or any other user.
If you show them(Apple) the bootrom exploit within a short time of its release like they did with the 3GS then they can flash/update the bootrom of new iphones produced and put an end to it or get stuck with tethered JB's again.
Its like playing poker. You dont show your best hand untill it counts or when you dont have any other options left.

I agree. There are still a LOT of iPhones orders still in the queue waiting to be fulfilled at some unknown date, and the white ones have yet to see the light of day. Releasing the bootrom exploit now gives Apple time to change the bootrom on the white phones and future iPhone 4s. The smart move is to save that particular jailbreak for months down the road when several million more iPhones have been put in the hands of customers.

Just curious, what did geohot do? I know that the last bootrom exploit was leaked by NitroKey, letting apple patch iboot and implement ecid.

He claimed to have a bootrom exploit that could jailbreak all Apple devices for life.

Where the exploit actually is, is up the the believers imagination.

Probably the same place where that ps3 firmware update is

That exploit is tethered for 3GS new bootrom & 4. The userland one is easy to burn up and save the good ones for later.

first geohot did or does have a exploit but someone else also has the same exploit as geohot did and does so that exploit is in good hands

I'd rather just stop talking about geohot - there is a reason he got removed from the dev team + his track record on delivering what he says he has is poor at best.

Plus he's a douchehole

I cant believe that five column springboard is not compatible yet for 4.0. no mention of fivelrows on that spreadsheet either :(.

Doesnt matter. We havent seen anything, he refusing to show us anything, therefore it doesn't help anybody.

Woo Hoo! It's coming!

Sorry I'm a little late to the party.

Man, I can't WAIT for the Jailbreak. I'm dyin' here!

the thing between geo and the dev team i think has been squashed......whether you like geo or not he is good at what he does or did...i never said he was releasing it i was pointing out that the fact the someone else has found the same exploit geo had found

The thing is, if Geohot would release a JB for all the currently Unjailbreakable iPhones we would love him even if he is a douche

Maybe for a while, but as soon as Apple patches the jailbreak and leaves people out in the cold again, they would go right back to hating him for not "releasing a new one fast enough". That's what happens when people get dependent on you. It's a love/hate relationship. Geohot is just sick of the self-entitled whiners who write and call him day and night complaining about their unjailbroken phones.

I'm not talking about anyone here. For the most part it seems people on macrumors have a bit more patience and self-control than that. But those kinds of people are out there, and they're constantly harassing Geohot/Comex/Dev Team. Honestly, I feel bad for them.

You make a real good point there, especially those people who are unaware and probably don't want to be aware that these guys make this stuff for free

I would like for Geohot to prove me wrong, although I'm not provoking him to. But what kind of response do you expect when you tell people you have that kind of exploit but you never plan on releasing it? He said so via twitter that he has no plans for making a jailbreak (hell, even comex was upset), so why even bother telling us said exploit?

The Dev Team can hold their own, I think we all know that at the least.

I'd really love to see what you've done in any way shape or form that has affected the millions of users who unlocked their iphones. Not only is he a genius of his time, but he has changed the way people use their phones and on what carriers. He was the first to unlock the iphone, first to come out with a PC jailbreak that was easy! "click here" or you can go through the original dev team jailbreak and go through 3 processes...

he may be a douchehole to you, but has done more for the iphone community then you can ever imagine as well as expanded our vision of what we can do with "just a phone"

how about you go invent a longer lasting light bulb or something, maybe you will warrent a comment like "douchehole" too.
