So, what about EDGE coverage in Canada?
Will an EDGE-iPhone be a possibility or does it need 3G-connectivity to hit in Canada?

The article you referenced looks very promising.

Although I highly highly doubt that the iPhone will be here in February. While the unlimited data plans might be, the chances of also squeezing in the iPhone are slim to none. If anything, we might be able to expect an official announcement in February, possibly citing a release in early June?

Nonetheless, I think that we ALL agree that should these data plans actually come to fruition in early Feb, it will almost guarantee a Rogers iPhone in the next 6-8 months.

whether or not i question the customer serv rep's info, what I wonder is:

how bad are we, the nice Canadians, going to get absolutely bent over the table and RAPED with data charges.

Unless one is going to use it for business so they can write it off, they better have a 2nd job to pay for the rates or be rich to begin with.

work wise I can understand the functionality, but for otherwise 'fun' use...wow. that's alot of cash.

then again, i probably do not too smart things with my money either :)

despite what I said, it will be tough for me not to buy one :) I could use it for work :)

Edge coverage is find up here, we also have 3G. Maybe Rogers wants to wait for a 3G iPhone. Who knows, but it's starting to look a whole lot more promising. I personally called in yesterday to ask if there was any truth to the february launch. The CSR said he couldn't confirm anything, but told me to hold off on getting a new phone as the iPhone will be arriving soon.

Why the high wireless rates in Canada?

I've heard that it costs more to have cell phone coverage in Canada because the population is very spread out and dispersed. Although the cities have high population densities, phone companies have to use some of these profits to service rural areas at the same rates. We need a lot more towers to reach fewer people than other countries. When hills and mountains are involved more towers are also needed. More towers, more service personal, means greater costs to the consumer. That's what I was told a number of years ago. Makes sense to me.

By the time Canada gets the iPhone, the upgrade may be out. Even if it came out now, I'd be hesitant to buy one because it's already due for an upgrade.

i bet all these Rogers CSR's go home and swap stories about the suckers they talked to and told that the iPhone is "coming soon..."

lol

ya right. I said F it and got the touch. cuz waiting was driving me crazy and i'm not into the hack..or this overpriced madness...

I'm of the opinion that slowly the data rates will become more normalized (or at least better than Rwanda) and a new 3G iPhone 2 will come out and Rogers will get it.

I've even heard rumors that Telus will get it...which of course means they are changing their towers.. (i would be quick to say this is BS if it didn't come from a source i respect) but i'll still say it's a retarded rumor.

anyway, I'm a calling a Fall iPhone 2 launch for Canada. Maybe an announcement near June....
breath?? not holdin it.

I thought that was what the $6.95 System Access Fee that all the carriers charge here was for?

That's a myth to keep us from complaining. Look at the US, not every state has the same population density and most are sparsely populated once you take out the big city states like California and New York. Also, I live part-time in Australia and the country is just as big but 21 million people. They have more phone choices and cheaper data and voice rates. It's all about the protection the CRTC provides Rogers etc.

Take away that protection, let Vodafone UK or AT&T come in and we'll see those sacred rates drop pretty quick.

My colleague at work said that Apple and that other company settled on the iPhone name a number of months back. A Canadian company uses the name iphone for one of its long distance services.

When are we going to get some competition in canadian cell phone service? Even if iphone were here now, who could afford it? We'd have to limit our downloading.

I suspect that the following countries will get an iPhone before we do in Canada. Why? Cuz we have Rogers.

Afghanistan – Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
Burkina Faso
Christmas Island – Territory of Christmas Island (Australian overseas
Falkland Islands (UK overseas territory)[22]
Iran – Islamic Republic of Iran
Kazakhstan – Republic of Kazakhstan
Libya – Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya
Liechtenstein – Principality of Liechtenstein
Monaco – Principality of Monaco
Nagorno-Karabakh – Nagorno-Karabakh Republic[6]
Rwanda – Republic of Rwanda
Saint Pierre and Miquelon – Territorial Collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon (French overseas collectivity)
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
South Ossetia – Republic of South Ossetia
Vatican

You forgot:
North Korea
Tatooine
Azeroth

Well, today is it for February and no annoucement.

Once again, the CSR you spoke to proved that CSRs are just there so you have someone to talk to, not because they have any actual information.

im getting one, and im goign to make sure i turn that EDGE thing off at all times... i d rip the button off if it was there was one :D

Exactly. Those guys don't know d*ck. When it is announced, it will be a joint Apple-(insert carrier here) announcement, not by some phone-jockey that answers billing questions.

Then again.... the SDK was supposed to be launched in February too, and that has apparently been pushed to March 6th. If black is the new white, and 30 is the new 20, then maybe March is the new February?:D

So with the new apple store opening at WEM on July 1st, do you think
they will annouce the iphone for Canada ???
I saw one today.... Wow...

Yeah, too bad that the every country did not adopt 3G as the standard
format. Now Apple has to cater to two formats in a sense.
