No chance they bring out two products at the same time. You can't promote one as well as you would with just one.

Two? There are 18 versions of the iPad2, so I don't think it's out of the question to have a few more versions with higher resolution.

I returned my iPad 2 today I just bought this past Sunday for three reasons:

1) Everything I need it for, I can do on my Macbook Pro.
2) $550ish for a new toy is very pricey, seeing as how I can do the same things on my MBP.
3) I would rather save my $ than have to sell the iPad 2 at a loss just to have some $ to get the forthcoming iPad with retina display.

So you're just chiming in to say you made an uniformed decision in the first place? And an improved display will suddenly make the iPad a device that can do more things than your MBP?

The iPad 2 is a great product, don't get me wrong. But I don't absolutely need one now and it's more of a lesiurely device.

I'm a first year medical student. I've read the iPad is great for annotating PDFs, taking notes, etc. But after using it for a few days, I'm not convinced it would be as great of an academic tool as I originally thought, and reading actual books and writing actual notes, for me at least, may facilitate learning better.

For web browsing, facebooking, twittering, e-mail, calendar and the like, it's great. It was very fun to use. But all things considered, it became more of a toy rather than something that would help me out in school.

And if it's going to be more of a toy, I can wait out for a better product with retina display that will keep me happier in the long run.

It sounds li8ke you made a reasoned and rational decision based oon your needs; however, I seriously doubt that a RD is going to make it relevant to your life.

True.

You're right; RD is not going to make the iPad 2 more relevant in my life. But I did have a blast using it and it was very fun to use. If it's going to be more of a toy and it's not a necessity to own one now, I'd rather save my $ and wait for the next update to come out. I can wait until March to get the next iPad, assuming Apple follows its yearly update cycle.

I'm very happy with the current Ipad 2, I use it for videos, reading comics, reading books, streaming from Plex and My Slingbox, it logs my Ham Radio contacts. I use the Star locating apps with my telescope, browse the web, stream Sirrius/xm, I mean it does so much. If anything I'd like a smaller 7" version for carrying it about, but thats it

I don't think they *have* to release an iPad before Christmas, but I also think much of the negativity boils down to this: so many proud owners of the iPad2 will no longer have the latest and greatest.

That very well may true, but that doesn't make the rumor itself any less suspect. The thing is, I think all of the ongoing talk about it (which also includes this thread you started by the way) is a bit silly. When there is something concrete to believe, then it's worth talking about. You've done nothing but add to the very things you seem to be trying to comment against.

A new ipad HAS to be out by Christmas? Isn't this the same script used last year when Apple absolutely had to release a 7" ipad in order to compete with competitor offerings? Wonder how that worked out.

And as far as Apple not allowing other competitors to get ahead in tech specs....Are you freakin' kidding me?!!! Been living under a rock for the last few years?

How would retina display make a new iPad less of a "toy" for you?

I never said it would make it less of a toy to me, but if it's going to be a toy and I don't necessarily need one right now, I may as well just save my $ and wait for the next revision to come out with a really nice feature like RD that would make me spring for it. If I don't need an iPad 2 now and one with RD comes out next March, I'd gladly save my $ and get it then.

I'm still pretty skeptical about this rumor. Cortex-A15 is almost certainly off the table for 2011, and PVR6 probably is as well. So, we're most likely either looking at A5 again or A6 as a quad core Cortex-A9 with SGX543 on more cores.

If it's A5 again, then it'll be underpowered. If A6 is based on the same architecture, power consumption will go up (not to mention there may be higher power consumption on the new panel as well). Battery technology hasn't changed dramatically so I imagine we'd see a major battery life penalty.

With that in mind, I'll say again I find it vaguely plausible as another device in the lineup, but unlikely given that it'd be kind of a hackjob relative to what an iPad3 could be in 2012 and the basis upon which Apple's products generally find demand (aesthetics, UI, platform integration, brand cachet). I still find the claims that Apple will lose market share because they will somehow suffer a devastating blow in mindshare or consumer interest for failure to release a 'retina display' in 2011 completely bogus. There is essentially zero evidence to support that claim. iPhones have lagged behind more than once on hardware and Apple didn't suffer devastating blows in either mindshare or market share. Many if not most of the people who buy Apple mobile products do not see Apple's competitors as a genuine alternative so even if an iPad HD doesn't come out this year, most of the people who wanted one will simply wait for iPad 3.

release within this year? dont think so

does not make any sense.
but hey i could be wrong.

When the iPad 3 shows up, save your $ and get the next model instead.

Why wouldn't they refresh the iPad twice in the same year? How often do they refresh the Mac?

Nothing is impossible. Even though it seems unlikely now, it can be normal in only a year. The iPad is still a new product, marketing strategies can change quickly.
Personally, i rather believe a higher-specced ipad2 will be released, however not labeled ipad3. But only a few people know the truth ;)

He probably will if it doesn't fill a need in his life. He's being very smart.

I would think that the large majority of iPad purchasers did not buy the device to fill a need in their life, but rather bought it because it's a fun device (or perhaps they had a "need in their life" to buy a fun portable device")...Now, I certainly agree that "some" people have a "need" for a $600+ tablet, but I'm sure most iPad buyers could live just fine without their iPad if they had to...:)

Exactly, and if he doesn't need another fun device in his life then, he'll probably wait, just like he's doing now.
