Everyone is looking at existing technology ,perhaps Apple has found a way of delivering content another way e.g.: through the electric just think no aerials no dishes no decoding boxes just plug you telly in to any electrical outlet and you get a signal they dont need the cable companies, they buy straight from the broadcasters the same as the cable companies do now, not to far from networking your computers through the plugs in your house now that would make them different from any other manufacturer

Apple already has all the largest major professional sports on the Apple TV except for the NFL. They have baseball, basketball, and hockey. You can already get the NFL on iOS through the NFL Sunday Ticket app so it's just a matter of time for even the NFL. Not sure why you think Apple can't bring sports programming to the end consumer.

Yeah, lots of choices and great for the sports enthusiast who wants to view it all. For a more passive viewer, these are not good options.

I was able to do that a year ago in my iPhone using Comcast app

To all the Sharp bashers out there

I have a Sharp Full LED array TV and it's awesome. It looks a lot better than a lot of other brands I looked at. When I see something in 1080p, I get teary eyed, it's so freakin' awesome:p

My assumption is that the Apple TV set will be a single device that won't work with existing junk that clutters the living room. Throw away the blu ray player, throw away the satellite box - just get the Apple TV set, plug it in, have access to all live TV channels around the world (for a subscription fee) over the internet and the option of renting TV programs, and playing content from iTunes on Mac/PC. Wireless interaction only - with computer, iPad, iPhone. Simplicity.

Having said that - I can imagine people criticising if it didn't have things like HDMI inputs, just like when the iMac didn't have a floppy drive...

The floppy can be worked around, though. No way to hook up anything else? Not so much.

That would be a great way to create a DOA product. Sort of like creating an iPod that you couldn't use your ripped songs on. People have existing media libraries and equipment, and will want to be able to use them, without jumping through a bunch of hoops.

Anyway, I'm still thinking that the next Apple TV will still be more of a set-top box, because TVs are generally longer-term purchases than STBs, phones, and personal media players, so consumers upgrade them less frequently. Not to mention the fact that margins are low to nonexistent, not exactly Apple's typical business model. No, it's the connectivity, the control software, and the consumer's control over content, not the physical display, that have the potential to make a future Apple TV a success.

Business as usual from the also-rans.

Steve Jobs mentions something about doing a TV and then everyone suddenly claims to be working on it already.

Look to Apple, try to follow as closely as possible, rinse, repeat.

I'm sorry to wake you up, but in my reality, others already have shipping products or at least announced products with announced feature sets while Apple is the company that only has RUMORED products so far WITHOUT any official announcements. In the world where I live, this by definition makes Apple the one who's late to the party and forced to play catch-up with the rest.

Each and every time MR shows this Hideous AppleTv Picture, I prefer it to look more like the one below.
Just a fast Photoshop.
Sorry to say but those Samsung high end Tv's (Series 8000) with a small bezel are gorgeous.
Apple should do something similar, not the same but with an as small bezel as possible.

Hate it if it comes out much sooner than predicted, just bought two new LG's.

Who'd a thought Apple would be the one to bring about Fahrenheit 451?

As once was said:

Apple arrives late to the party, but leaves with the prettiest girl!

If that trend continues it doesn't matter when they have their product ready.
It will be good!

On the funny thought side: What if Steve Jobs just said he cracked it to make the competition scramble in the TV area, while Apple is working on something else?

Good article on Sharp/Apple here. It questions the 2012 timeframe for the TV introduction:

Given how long rumors of an Apple-branded TV set have been floating around and the "fundamental go-to-market" problems Steve Jobs put his finger on 16 months ago, I wouldn't bet the farm on a mid-2012 launch.

So what did Peter Misek learn in Japan? The "key takeaway," as he calls it, is that Apple has sunk a lot of money -- as much as a billion dollars -- into a new supplier (most pointedly, not Samsung) and new screen technologies to build the next generation of iPads and iPhones with resolutions, battery life and prices its competitors will be hard-pressed to match.

PS: Sorry if this has been posted before. Most news outlets just copied the Jefferies report without questioning the 2012 timeline.

Problem is, few people are using those products. The only one that comes close in my mind is Tivo, and while it does have a large following, it is not nearly large enough, IMO. (although both DirecTV and Dish have improved their product because of Tivo) It is the only product that improves TV viewing, other than better hardware specs, which is NOT what SJ was talking about.

High quality OLED screen technology with the Apple A6 chip in it, enhanced siri functionality and most likely some sort of sensor like kinect where you can just swipe, touch, whatever you want to flip through channels, pull up the guide etc all without touching the screen, you would be doing this all by just sitting on the couch and swiping your finger etc.

You're on Crack?

OLED won't happen anytime soon in such big formats, and another thing is that many people have them in their living rooms, a bit of sunlight and there goes the quality down the drain.

I have an Iphone and a macbook. I love Apple products but Apple could make anything and people will buy it. I am sorry but this is the truth.

Apple is the greatest marketing company mankind has ever seen. They can make you believe that buying a outdated laptop that looks pretty is a good deal at 1000$. They sell their products from image. Don't get me wrong their products are good but they are not better than everyone else. I remember when duel core android phones came out you guys would complain and say "no one needs duel core, it just eats up battery etc" Apple puts it in their phone and it's the greatest thing ever. Just like 4G LTE, if apple put it in the iphone 4s you guys would think Apple is the great company ever. But since it's not in it you say it's not needed.

Another example is Siri, android and windows phone had it before Apple. It was stupid then and it's stupid now. Who talks to their phone? I can see if you are driving or something but do you really go out in public and talk to text? No, you don't. But apple says it's great that means it is...right?

You seem to have a lot of issues.

Does your stuff work?

If yes, be happy !

If not, get stuff that works for you.

What does it matter what somebody else posts here, what Apple does and says, what people buy?

So he isn't allowed (according to you) to disagree with posts made by those that support Apple no matter what they do? I don't agree with the post either but he does have a point and its GOOD to have a debate, don't stifle it you fan boy you.

you are ignoring the design of the software and focusing only on hardware

Your right, but some high quality screen technology for sure

Since I most of my products that I use come from Apple, it would only make sense to by a TV from Apple, that is if it is actually beneficial. I would like it to be integrated with the Time Capsule so I can stream from it. For people who are saying "talking to my TV would be annoying": 1. You must not have 4S, as you don't have to talk to your phone. 2. Xbox Kinect is already using it to control their devices. I have not played with it, but it doesn't seem to be annoyance, but I am sure you don't HAVE to use it.

Don't say it's a waste of money/effort, because we all have different taste.
