As much as mobile computing has created a new paradigm, I really think that the good old TV set remains the core of our technology and social consumption. As such I'm surprised it has taken Apple so long to get into this market. Having said that, I guess they've been busy with other things. :D

If Apple nails this move, look out world, we really could be looking at an entirely magnificent and integrated ecosystem like we've never seen before.

Siri on the TV for searching for programs seems about as innovative as Google TV and even the new Bing Search for Xbox Kinect.

Apple is very good at "perfecting" a product like this though, I hope they take it a step further and nail down a good product.

That said... the title of this post was a bit over dramatic. These products HAVE been in the works by a lot of people for quite a while.

Super 8 took 4+ hours to stream for my AppleTv 2! Is Next Day TV exciting to you?

All these streaming ideas...how can this be done successfully without the cooperation of cable or satellite companies?

Everything Apple is doing is dependent on those who actually do the transmitting and they are a total bottleneck in both technical capability and in their financial interests.

The key is to either bypass them with some new technology or to own them. Aside from that, we are talking about nothing more than nicer equipment.

Everyone, get ready to copy what Apple does and lets make some Android TV's.

But seriously, I am interested in what Apple has planned in the TV world.

There are already TVs with Android. I believe it's from a Swedish company.

Cable companies control the pipes. If you cut the cable tv cord, your internet will cost more. Nobody will change that unless they buy those companies and change it. Sony is idiotic if they think cable companies will allow them to bypass a service they provide without making money off of it.

Although I think we will get a lot of copies, I am glad that Apple seems to have initiated new products from other companies. I like to see competition over a market. In the end, the consumer wins.

Sorry to burst your RDF bubble, but it already exists.
Sony has had Google TV built into several units for over a year now.
Clunky remote (the thing is HUGE) and painful to use, but they looked really sweet.

The problem sony will have is they are also a content creator who need access to these other outlets for their content, that they might be bypassing. That will make it difficult for them to simply bypass traditional distribution channels.

Apple can simply access those willing to provide content with the new paradigm.

Sony isn't creating their own system... It's Google TV. Content comes from content providers just like with Apple. Either from the users computer, the users' cable box, Amazon, Netflix, etc...

If anything... Sony is in a good spot since they could offer Sony Pictures content at a discounted rate for owners of their product. Doubtful though...

If you haven't already, take a look at Google TV. It's pretty revolutionary to be honest. The big issue is that it doesn't really cut the cable cord so people are slow to adopt. But it's cool to be able to just search for a show and have it pull up info on a channel from your cable, Youtube, Amazon etc... all right from one search. Once the 3.2 update comes out for the Revue I may get one. It's only $99.
