umm i think returning it is being an active consumer. more so than paying for an item, hating it and just complaining. they have your money you do realize that right? for something you don't like and complaining about, they won
I don't hate the 4th gen. Apple TV. I don't like that they rushed to market with a dearth of apps, particularly apps that are easily made ready for the new platform. They already offer premium network apps for iOS that are full HD ready. 90+% of the code is already there. I'm just trying to nudge the premium networks' dev teams to step up to the platform faster. Since these apps are, for the most part, cable or satellite subscription dependent ALREADY, there's no earthly reason not to port them to tvOS.

Can't really argue with that. All I can say is every new launch is weak! Got the ps4 when it launched, not much offered. Now the apps you would expect are finally on it. Being early adopters for pretty much anything seems to really have its down points. But I do think it is fun to see the piece of equipment evolve Which is why I like being in the early adopter crowd.

Btw, were you an early adopter for fcpx? I let was not good, now it's amazing.

Hopefully this week brings more new apps. Auntie Player proved that any network can easily bring their content to the new Apple TV with a few hours of work. I'm getting impatient now that it's been over a week and most of the TV apps are the same that were on the last generation and the app store is getting flooded by a bunch of ****** low quality apps (probably the most frustrating part).

Fingers crossed.

No you really don't. You can import your app over with very little work at all. It took me less than an hour to convert it over. It's 90 percent a iOS app. So honestly there is no excuse!

Apps with same interface as the iOS app for iphone or ipad are lazy work from the UI team that code for AppleTV and does not promote AAA quality, I guess thats probably why we dont see your 1 hour transfer app in the best category

Wow, that's just silly.

You think Apple should wait several months for several services to finish their Apple TV apps before they release their device, while the rest of us are perfectly fine with the current set of the apps offered?

How about I do one better; return the device and wait until these apps come out before buying it. That's a better solution than yours.

And dev teams do not control the schedule, the marketing teams do and some of them most likely have a contract in place that prevents them from doing whatever they want. The same reason HBO Now was available exclusively on Apple TV for a month before any other services can have it available on first day.

You can nudge all you want, developers do not control the schedule and priority, the marketing team most of the times do.

In most cases, the bigger the company, the more slower it takes them to release an update for new platforms. They have to go through several things to make sure they can do it. Content providers have to be careful with offering the same content they want on new platforms to avoid cross-over with any TV streaming agreements they have in place.

If I had known in advance that the tvOS app store would be filled with a) useless crap b) the same apps I already have on my 3rd gen. Apple TV, and c) a bunch of stupid time-suck games, I would have exercised my patience by NOT SPENDING MY MONEY YET on the "new" Apple TV.
Talk about useless crap, Max go,stars,ENCORE PLAY,EPIX that is useless crap.
Really everyone should have known the App Store wasn't going to have anything for some time.
And one last thing this is not for gaming. Go buy an XBOX. Don't blame anyone but yourself for buying it right off the bat. LOL

Seems like the OP should have waited until the apps HE wanted were available before buying it. If Apple waited until all the apps that all the buyers would want to be available, they'd never release it. I use AppleTV every day, but I've got no intention of buying the new one until I hear about apps that cause me to want to buy it... otherwise I get what I need from the old one.

He sounds like the spoiled child from Willy Wonka.

I actually agree that perhaps Apple could have delayed the launch. Get more developers to make quality apps. And then release it while advertising those apps along with the device. As it is. The box isn't earth shattering. It's Apple catching up to their competition.

Exactly. Apple was holding out to get deals in place but it got to the point where they had to release an update and it's not a disappointing box and more TV apps will show up eventually but right now it seems to be the video game companies making the most of the app store.

Yeah. Could it be more? Yes. Am I disappointed with it. No. It will improve over time. As I said before. I am not a huge gamer. So I settled on the 32gb box. I sold my old atv with an old roku stick I had. It help offset some of the cost. So now I got the new Apple TV for a little less than $100 with the box I sold to help pay for this. And cause of that. I at least feel slightly better about the purchase.

You're wrong. All the premium networks will eventually port their iOS apps to tvOS. They'll do it faster if more early adopters complain. The hardware's state-of-the-art. Stop being obtuse.

it is the chicken and egg, which one would come first.

Apple waits for good apps to be ready, and then developers would wait for Apple to release ATV first to have platform to develop on. in the end, we are five years late.

I am glad that Apple releases ATV now (prefer sooner), even though their streaming service is not ready. Software development takes times. they have only one month. So I am happy with what we have in the app store now. Go check Google TV app store, it is like a ghost town there. mainly because there are good hardware that is popular out there for Google TV. Nvidia shield is good but it is expensive and does not have market mass for app to sell well.

These apps currently cover 90% of my media consumption:
1) Netflix
2) Youtube
3) Infuse

if you want more apps hit up the providers facebook and twitter pages, the more requests the more likely they'll speed up their development of the app

This is one of the few reasons I do not have the new AppleTV and the fact that I still have xbox360 - with xbox360 I get access to many premium apps such encore, stars, movieplex etc in addtiion to hbo and starts. Mind you it is very slow to navigate and the game controller is not the best thing to navigate with, but it still works. One day, I will get rid of both and just get AppleTV 5 lol (when it comes out)

Regardless of it being new hardware, apple can't force them to create the apps. They can " nudge " all they want, but just because WE live in the apple ecosystem, those apps have to make it to fireOS, Android OS, windows OS, blackberry even in some cases. If the company releasing the app doesn't feel they will make a good return on the effort, then they put the effort into other places within the company. It makes no sense for you to assume otherwise. Apple can't just stop releasing new items, that's what they do, they build the platforms, and developers come and submit apps to the platform. you already know this based on your previous posts. Are you just ranting to rant?

So complain to the network and dont bitch here because they dont read on forums.

Furthermore, the Apple TV experience sucks because using the Apple TV is not how people watch TV. Where is the program schedule? I want to see a program schedule and then simply select the programs I want to watch. Let Apple TV record them, stream them, or pop up a reminder when a program is available for viewing. I don't care if it's on Netflix, Hulu, or CBS.

Instead we have a ridiculous grid of apps and no way to watch NEW episodes of our favorite shows without clicking into each app where we watched that particular series. Cumbersome and terrible experience. It's the same on Roku and the rest. Apple is known for improving the experience, yet here they have simply mirrored the flawed experiences offered by other boxes.

Apple didn't rethink anything with Apple TV. All they did was figure out a way to shoehorn iOS into a TV form factor. That's it. Apple TV is a total fail.

Not sure what you mean by program schedule? HULU, Netflix and a lot of the other apps available are not on a set schedule. You just select the program you want to watch, and it is available on demand.

I do think roku has an interesting feature that I would like to see on Apple TV. You can choose a movie or show that may not be available at this time. Put it on a wish list if you may. And it will let you know when it becomes available, and on what service. Stuff like that would be nice to see on the Apple TV.

Yes, but it would be nice if Apple had implemented a global queue with an API for 3rd party apps. You'd go into an app such as Hulu or HBO Go, and add a show to the global queue. Whenever a new episode becomes available, it'd be automatically pushed to the queue by the app. You could see at a glance what new content is available instead of constantly checking several queues in different apps.

Yep, that's close. It's a shame it doesn't work for new TV episodes though.

I don’t think you understand how streaming works. Schedules do not exist in them. You do not record anything. That’s why Apple creat the up next. It’s the closest thing there is.

Your suggestions of a global que reminds me of how podcasts work... and as far as I have seen' that is how it works. I had got set in up next and each week it’d be there in up next waiting for me, all I had to do is go to up next and hit play. And that’s from HBO...
