Nobody is even close to beating Comcast's availability + technology.

FiOS is up there (the technology may be even better than Comcast), but the lack of availability and the set top box issue I mentioned make it a no-go for me.

The three most popular and biggest internet providers in the U.S. are Comcast, at&t, and Verizon. I don't see any of them matching Comcast.

Also, Comcast's "coax" technology has been around forever and is already embedded in many homes from their original analog cable TV a while back. Now, they can use that same coax and bring internet and phone to the already-serviced areas that they've expanded into for many years.

The point still stands, if you had to move for some reason into a city not served by Comcast (and there are plenty of them) then you lose your Comcast address. And you can't honestly tell me that if you lost your current job and the only job offer you got was from a company in another city not served by Comcast - and it was great pay, great benefits and they were paying your moving expenses, etc, that you would turn it down because you might have to switch to U-verse or FiOS.

I work for one of Comcast's competitors, and one of the awesome perks is I pay barely anything for a bazillion channels, the fastest internet tier, VoIP with unlimited long distance (that bit's actually free - I wouldn't pay a dime for landline since I have a cell phone), and as many set top boxes as I desire, and that keeps me loyal to the product and my job, but I still won't use my ISP provided e-mail address because I'm not so loyal that in the event I lost my job that I would stick with them and turn down an offer in a city that would require me to switch to someone else.

You are correct on that point. I had at&t DSL for quite some time (I think it was all the way back in 2001). I switched to Comcast last year, and of course I had to switch email addresses. The process took a few hours, but I was able to successfully email everyone I know in my Address Book, switch all the email addresses of the 10 or so sites I'm registered on, and I was good to go.

A non-ISP email address has the advantage of not having to go through that. But I still prefer to "stick" with them. The idea of a third party email does not agree with me. It's just a gut level thing.

Also, your benefits sound damn good. But most places do have Comcast where I live. But yeah, if the situation were the one you mentioned, it sounds like a great deal. I can't really see though how anywhere around me would not have Comcast, unless there was a condominium association that only allowed DirecTV + at&t or something.

And it sounds like you work for Verizon?

I'm talking about moving to an entirely different city.

For traditional cable services, typically one provider has a monopoly in that area. For example, Comcast is nowhere to be found in St. Louis. They don't offer service here. If you want traditional cable over coax, your choices are Charter...and that's about it.

Maybe switching e-mails isn't a big deal for some. But when I think of the places where I'm registered at - my banks, online stores I frequently shop at, a handful of forums, my various utility providers, changing e-mail addresses would be a massive pain in the ass.

In my area, there is at&t U-verse, Comcast, and at&t DSL/POTS. Those are really the only options in my area if you don't want to go back to the Stone Age. And U-verse is not even available for my residence, but people around me have it available. So the only option for me instead of the DSL/POTS + Comcast cable combo (which I had for many years) is the Comcast triple play. And like I said, thank God for those DTAs. I have an amazing Samsung TV that I use primarily (with an HD box), and two regular TVs upstairs that I would not want an STB with.

I'll take that as a Y-E-S.

I'll take that as I overlooked the question ;) But no....

I have a 13 character pseudo-random generated string of letters and numbers for my address @gmail.com. I used to use my first two initials and last name, but that just kept filling up with spam. Since I changed two years ago with this jumbled mess of an address, I haven't received one single, solitary piece of spam to date.

Wow, I have never seen or heard of a Comcast fanboy before, I guess now I have.

As for the email domain names, whatever works for you. I think the "name" on the address if far more important than the domain name. I totally agree that the silly names like princess, lollypop of fatmolly are not professional.

All of the big cable providers are pretty good, Time Warner, Cox and Comcast. They all have a triple play bundle you can buy. I have TW and could not be happier with it. As for Fios and Uverse, no thanks. I have had both available to me now for a couple of years. Way to much money for what you get for those services and I have a few neighbors that have them and they have all had problems.

Apple, Comcast, Universal Orlando Resort, ayumi hamasaki.

I'm a fanboy for all of them. If anyone challenges that another thing is better than the above things within each category, you will hear from the fanboy himself. It is factual that the above are the best in their respective categories.

If you don't work for at&t or Verizon, then you work for a company that is national, but hasn't infiltrated the market enough for me to even consider it.

Last time I created an email address I couldn't get anything other than my last name followed by my first initial and middle initial. Something like, smithab@email.com.

It's not great, but you take what you can get I suppose.
