I just did a bit of research and do not see a hactivation option with Limera1n. I was sure it had that option.
Do you have any idea where your phone was purchased

The odds are high that it was purchased in the US in which case an att sim will activate it. Alternatively there is something called a "phone book" sim
which others have used successfully to activate phones. They are available on the internet check Ebay.
I'm in the UK and it was bought through another guy in the UK...so I doubt that it's a US phone.

In that case borrow a sim from someone on one of the other carriers. T-Mobile, Vodophone etc
You only need it long enough to activate. Then go to Cydia and unlock.
got a guy here at work who has some spare sims at home...will try one of those and hope that it works.

ok..so progress is meing made....slowly
after restoring to 4.01, BB 1.59.00
I managed to get hold of a vodafone sim and activated my phone. jailbreakme.com wouldn't work so I used limerain.
phone is now jailbroken, but isn't unlocked. I used Ultrasn0w but it will still only accept the vodafone sim, not my O2 one.
what should I try now?

restore, jailbreak, unlock
and now it seems to be working.
