I agree with the op except for the fact that I don't own an iPhone 4 (though know many who do) nor an original ipad. so i'm getting ipad 2 and will just resell it for next years ipad. will still lose a little money but that's ok with me.

I did notice that the iPhone 4 was kinda like it was cool to show off but I never really paid it attention until I looked back at older iPhones and then the iPad and then I was like "I can see the pixels noooooooooooooooo" So yeah I guess you can say the iPhone 4 spoiled me.

*Note I am just agreeing with the OP not really talking about the technical feasiblity of it etc.

I completely agree... I was really considering the ipad 2 as i find myself continually using the phone to surf the web. I thought I might prefer the extra screen size of the ipad.

However, after borrowing my dads ipad 1 for the day I did notice the difference straight away. I guess you just get used to the retina screen and take it for granted.

I'd never take an ipad out of the house or use it for anything other than just surfing. Now with all these cases of varying amounts of screen bleed I've decided to wait for now and see what the future holds.

Very, very interested to see how 5 pans out.

Was 100% sold on getting the iPad 2...

Went into the Apple Store today to play with it, and even though the case redesign is beautiful, and it is thin...I still can't get over how inferior the screen looks compared to the iPhone 4.

I have been completely spoiled. My perfect tablet has a 'retina' style screen on it, and even though I know the technology is far off, its hard to spend so much money on a screen that looks so inferior to what my eyes are used too.

If I never saw the retina on my iPhone 4 I would think the iPad looks amazing.

I know this discussion has been done to death, but after leaving the Apple store today, my opinion completely changed on whether I truly need the iPad 2 or to wait to drop the $$$ when Apple finally ups the resolution!

Discuss!

Well believe me when i say you still won't see the retina screen with iPad3.
I'm sure the screen will be flush with the glass i.e. iPhone 4, but not retina yet. ~ look for iPad 4 for retina.

Considering it was apparently a last minute removal from the iPad 2, I imagine it would be the big selling point of iPad 3.

Those saying fonts look crappy on the iPad 2 are nuts.

Have you even used an iPad 2 yet? I ask, because even though the res is the same, there are some who see an improvement in clarity and contrast over the original.

Yes, I bought one for my wife. Even she normally do not notice that kind of things, she told me about it without me asking her. And she has an iPhone 3GS. We do not have a former iPad.

Uh, no, that was Engadget covering their backside after treating their source as gold when it wasn't. Gruber, f'instance, was pretty solid all the way through that Retina would not be coming for the iPad 2. It seems likely that there were prototypes around but that's hardly surprising.

That being said, I think the most likely indication of when a Retina display will come along is when the processor and GPU get sufficient bumps to provide the same performance as you have in the iPad 2 at a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution. That MAY happen in 2012 if the 4 core 543 is affordable and if there's either a quad core A9 processor or, maybe, a dual core A15. It's for that reason that I don't believe you'll see a revision in September either, just don't beleive the performance boost required to get the same level of performance is going to be available by then.

I spend most of my time tethered to my laptop and compared to that the iPad2 screen is beyond gorgeous. I think it's even prettier than my iPhone 3gs. I am quite happy with my first iPad.

OP, do what I did. Get an iPad 1 on the cheap and wait for the iPad 3 or 4, whichever has the display you're looking for. Don't deprive yourself of the form factor waiting on tech that could be 1-2 years away.

Me neither... it's something you can passively appreciate in your day to day use. It's such an amazing push in technology and innovative as hell to push that many pixels into a screen that size.

I really enjoy reading my Twitter and RSS feeds on my iPhone 4.

+1

Went to Best Buy to check out the iPad 2. Nobody paid attention to them so it was great for me!

Screen sucks for text but I don't want to wait another year either. The difference between the iP4 and iPad 2 screens is night and day

It's the same spec display as the 1st generation, and in Anandtechs measurements actually has a bit poorer contrast ratio than the 1st gen. In any case, for those of us with good vision, the fonts don't look all that great. And yes, I use the iPad at a closer distance than my laptop or desktop, and yes, I'd still like higher resolution screens on them, too.

and methinks Gruber was absolutely right on this one. A Retina would've required more than 512 mb of memory and the A5 chps must've been specced a while ago. You cannot change a spec like a 2x (linear) resolution increase in the last minute just before production of the final units. But I really hoped for a retina :(

Completely agree with OP. This is really my only complaint about the iPad 2. I said I wasn't going to get it without a high-res screen, but I still will.

But at least it's noticeably clearer than my 13" MBP.

What are the chances we see iPad 3 with a 'retina' display at least to the rumored resolution that was debunked by Gruber not too long ago...

My eyes must suck. It doesn't bother me at all to go from my iPhone 4 to my iPad. I'm usually looking at the iPad screen from some distance anyway.

Gruber said that the retina is possible for iPad 3 so it's definitely an option.

I don't understand how such a complaint can be soloed onto the iPad when typical computer monitors are viewed the same as the iPad. Are you guys telling me you can't use your computer monitors either because you are spoiled from the iPhone 4?

The iPad's DPI is higher than every Mac with a screen excluding the 11.6" MBA (lower by only 3) and the 17" MBP (same as the iPad).

Right! All of a sudden retina is the only thing bearable. People here are such drama lames. #foh with that garbage rhetoric.

I went to an Apple Store the day before the announcement to remind myself what the iPad screen looks like, spurred on by posts on here that said it was garbage and that retina was a "must". I came to the distinct conclusion that the iPad display is absolutely belting, and most of the people on here who claim they need it are nuts.

I was pretty shocked how useful the retina display is on my phone. Never thought of the iPhone as having a deficient display. That said, I'm happy with my iPad's display, but will def upgrade once it goes higher res... who am I kidding, I'll buy every iPad as they come out. I have a large enough family to recycle the old ones.

I know this topic has been beat to death, but I did want to just say I agree. The problem with the iPad is the best way to use it and to view text is in portrait. Most web sites are designed for wide screen displays now, so when the iPad shows the whole site in portrait, it seems to be very pixelated and low resolution (even though the DPI is actually fairly good for a computer monitor).

This is a problem for me because I wanted to use it to read medical textbooks through the browser. The text really does look blocky and less clear.

I feel 100% spoiled by the iPhone's PPI.

It's undeniably unequivocal. After owning the 1st iPad for 6 months, and acquiring the iPhone 4, the difference was just unbearable for me. The iPad has been sold since the discovery, and I am iPad-less. I do plan on an iPad 2, but only because it is thinner and lighter which does tilt the scales back towards being more balanced.

I found myself wanting to use the iPhone 4, despite the smaller screen, versus the iPad; therefore, I will accept the iPad 2 as it is now and patiently wait for a higher resolution.

Great post!

The retina is great on the itty bitty iPhone screen, but the size of the iPad display offsets its lower resolution. For me the standard display is fine on iPad for now and I have no problem going back and forth. That said, a retina on the iPad will rock when it gets here.
