Got the first iPad...... loved it. Replaced it with the new retina iPad...... love it. Your advise...... baseless.

Not completely baseless.
It's actually a pretty good/wise advice to follow.
Maybe not avoid first gen completely but wait a couple of months before making the purchase just in case there are issues such as faulty antenna, lcd screen issues, scuffing out of the box, and so on

Fair enough: if a mini doesn't come out at all this season, then I would have to agree that would vindicate your contention, since it would pretty much mean Apple considered such a device (I'm sure they consider all options) but didn't think they had a worthy product at a workable price.

Oh mate I'm sure we would both LOVE to get inside Apple's R and D laboratory!! :D

I think we need to ask as you said if Apple are going to launch any new products now? Sure we have had a few rumours but nothing like the iPhone 5, all under Tim Cook's so called, 'doubling down on security', you would think for a hot product like a 7.85" iPad Mini we would have the entire specs and parts by now!

But I would say to people don't be surprised if we get to the end of October with no new products, well iPads anyway, and if they do launch one don't be shocked if it's expensive.
Just remember, despite all the competition, the iPad 3 is still selling rather well, I even brought one for my mum! Because it's a hell of a lot easier then her old MacBook is for her to use, she's not exactly a power user...

Since there are all under warranty, there's no penalty to buy early. If there's a problem, just exchange them for another.

Those who wait, often have to wait for awhile because of demand. Those who preorder get theirs first, and enjoy them sooner.

It makes no sense to wait and wait for the "next big thing". If you do that, you'll end up missing out.

What makes sense is just to by apple stuff as soon as it comes out, and then to buy the next one when IT comes out. Win/win.

The cheapest ipod touch 5g is $299, I have nothing to say, just be happy with my nexus7

Ugh, if only Apple put the amount of effort they put into iOS devices into Mac OS! I think Apple is better at making mobile phones/OSs than they are at making PCs and PC OSs, but the Mac is still the best PC out there, and I find it more useful than the "iToys".

I wouldn't compare a 7" tablet with 8GB-16GB of storage to a 4" iPod with 32GB-64GB of storage.

I agree with this strongly. I had a terrible experience with the iMac G5 and 2006 iMac, both of which were bought very close to the release date. And think about the iPhone 5...

Apple are pushing Maps, Siri and the Lightning port.

If it does happen I think it will be a straight-forward replacement for the iPad 2. Same power as the New iPad to allow reasonable usage of Maps when it comes out of Beta. ;)
Also with Siri as a selling point. Non-retina to keep the price down and to differentiate between the two models. And of course the new port.

Maybe the New iPad will be tweaked internally due to the 'heat issues' and get the Lighning port.

:)

I imagine a surprisingly low price for being Apple. If there's something Tim Cook knows his **** about, it's this. :p I'd go as far as to say that the low price will be the main attraction of the mini. I think Apple really wants to kill the lower end in the tablet business, and that they'll try to do it with an agressive pricing strategy to the point of being a device selling with their lowest profit margins yet. They'll have one device precision targeted for this, and they'll try to leave absolutely no room to compete. $199-$250 perhaps?

I can't see it being cheaper than an iPod Touch?

Don't you consider the time wasted in getting an exchange or a replacement (which may be more than once) a penalty in itself?

If that's what you meant, then that's what you should have said. Did I touch (iTouch :p) a nerve? You seem very defensive and angry.

I don't see how you're getting angry and defensive out of a purely informational piece; he may be a little exasperated at the lack of common sense displayed by some people, but he doesn't come across as defensive and angry. That baseless assertion in itself indicates, ironically, that you are on the defensive. Food for thought.

First: That's the iPad predictive texting getting away from me while I wasn't looking. But thanks for being anal enough to make an issue of it.

Second: Look again. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch/select_4thgeneration

Third: that's the model that has been available for the last three refreshes running. It is not a new iPod Touch; show some intelligence and stop being contrary just for the sake of it.

One of the main reasons I don't have an iPad is that I find them a bit awkward and heavy for extended reading. I quite often curl up on the sofa and read information on my iPhone. A smaller iPad could just make this a better experience over the larger models.

This is s nice rumour. Thanks for it.

But . . .

Still waiting for those iPad Mini part leak rumours. They've been (un)surprisingly scarce. So it's hard to tell what direction this product will go or even if it exists at all in a for sale model.

I think this will be very cheap and wont be retina.

I don't always take my iPad with me because it's just a little bit over the top for me weight wise. It's light but it's not that "feather light" feeling.

This would be an interesting option but I wouldn't get it unless it had retina.

I have a feeling it might be a "tuned-up" A5 chip or scaled back version of the A6 chip and it wont have a retna display. Otherwise I think the market for it would cannibalize iPad sales through Xmas.

However saying that, they could decide that iPad sales will stay steady no matter what they do with the iPad Mini because people (like my father-n-law) buy the iPad specifically FOR its large size and great features. A new sleek iPad mini plus the iPhone 5 may be just what they need to really break their stock wide open thru Xmas. However if that is the case, it will most likely be a higher price point as well.

My bet is on option 1 BUT i hope I'm wrong. MAYBE it will be some combination of both, like they have some top end iPad mini available with retna. Either way, I will definitely be buying one no matter what however because my Wife and Kids have officially adopted my iPad and I need my own again lol!

A few things intrigue me:

iPod touch 64gb - £329 (High end iPod)

iPad 3 16gb/Wi-Fi - £399 (Low end iPad)

Where's the room for a device that sits between those two?

Also - apps: No iPad apps will work. Unlike iPhone apps on iPhone 5.

Lastly - A point. What will Apple say their reason is for releasing it?

----------

Had another idea: if this is an iPad mini, and not a NEW product, it seems odd to release it before the iPad 4.

Like introducing the new 11" MacBook Air without updating the specs/design of the 13". Maybe my heads still set to PC, rather than Post-PC.

I wouldn't compare a 7" tablet with 8GB-16GB of storage to a 4" iPod with 32GB-64GB of storage.

I mean, if ipod touch can reach a price point 299, the ipad mini will definitely over that price. For a 7 or 8" tablet, I use it mainly for reading, mail check, calendar and notepad, $300 dollar is too much for me. beside those functions, I can use nexus 7 to replace my garmin gps, that is why I am happy with my nexus7.

If ipad mini's price is less than 300, and has gps chip in its wifi version, I will buy it. hope apple do things right.

I don't think it will be cheap or poorly made. That's just not Apple. They will still maintain there huge profit margin and it will be a quality product.

Also - apps: No iPad apps will work. Unlike iPhone apps on iPhone 5.

They'll actually work extremely well, as long the HIGs have been followed. That's kind of the point of using an existing resolution (and why I believe this device will be 1024x768), you get instant app compatibility and the device will register as an iPad, so you'll get the iPad flavor of the app.

My logic for the device specs are: maximum app compatibility + minimum cost (while maintaining maximum profit). That would seem to suggest, 1024x768 + A5 (i.e., iPad2, and sharing the same CPU/GPU as the iPhone 4S and the 5th gen/newest iPod Touch). The A5 seems to be Apple's "go to" processor for more midrange devices.

I imagine by the full size iPad refresh, we'll have this as the lineup:

A6 based
iPhone 5
iPad 4th Gen

A5 based
iPhone 4S
iPodTouch
iPad Mini

FWIW...

Lightening connector
iPhone 5
iPad Mini
iPad 4th Gen
iPodTouch 5G

By then, I wouldn't be surprised to see the iPad2 gone, and the 3rd gen replaced with the new A6 powered device ... Mini will be the "entry level" tablet, the retina device A5X vs. A6[?] would be confusing, plus it would flush all non-lighteing connector devices with the exception of the 4/4S out of the product lineup :)

I don't consider the odds that I'll get a lemon that good to be a major concern. Sure, it might happen on occasion, but it's still pretty rare.

This.

I doubt the majority of buyers live near an Apple store and/or like wasting time going there or to the post office.

Besides the hassle and gas (which ain't cheap these days), those of us who contract by the hour don't want to lose/pay a lot extra to replace something that should have had decent quality control.
