I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but the Computers / Home Sharing app on the ATV 4 has received a total facelift in tvOS11. Previously it looked pretty much identical to the ATV 2 & 3 but the new version more closely resembles the layout of the TV Shows and Movies apps. The Music section of the app also was updated. Gone is the focus on text lists, replaced by cover art. A long overdue update and encouraging to see Apple put some resources towards the Home Sharing feature of the ATV.

Good news indeed. I am tired of scrolling up and down endless lists (and the ATV4 remote's tendency to shift lists while I scroll is quite frustrating).

Thanks for mentioning this,

A.

I was really pleased to discover this a few minutes ago. I mainly use my Apple TV4 to play my iTunes library on my Mac Mini. The old interface was so boring and took ages to scroll through, the new interface even has a working search facility.

I noticed this a few moments ago and hopped online because I hadn’t heard anyone mention it yet. Fantastic update! A big step in the right direction. Hopefully the next step is integrating home sharing library with Siri search.

Long overdue revamp! Looks really good, only problem i have is most is most of my content is my own ripped collection, for tv shows the season artwork is showing in the episode thumbails, anyway to change this?

Try adding artwork to the content in iTunes and it should start showing up in the Computers app.

This is great news. I keep a lot of stuff in iTunes and stream it via Home Sharing. Right now, it feels like a second-tier priority in the ATV, but it will be really nice to see it "promoted" in functionality to the same level as everything else.

Thanks, i have artwork already in but its using this artwork for each episode thumbnail, its not showing a screenshot from the actual episode like it does on the store or plex

I have been trying to figure this out also. I have looked at the tagging info for some iTunes content I have downloaded and I am not seeing any artwork besides the season art, but inside the computers / home sharing app that episode shows both the season art and episode still frame. Would love to know how to accomplish this with my own content.

Try using Subler on your files. If a file has chapters, Subler will add a photo track with stills from the breaks. The only downside is that you can't choose what still to use, so you might get some all black shots.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, the content was already tagged using Subler with a photo track created for the chapters. I thought that might be where the still frame data was being pulled from but it is not.

It is interesting, but even very old content downloaded from iTunes seems to have these thumbnails. I wonder if it is something being pulled from Apple's servers? That would seem odd as the only way for it to function within the computers / home sharing app since most of that content was created by the user.

The best app I found so far for that (adding all metadata to my own ripped media files) is iFlicks 2. You can find it on the Mac App Store, but unfortunately it isn't free.

Or just use plex and be done with it. It automatically updates your metadata and cover art and is super easy to use. Works on any device out there.

Are the iTunes Extras available within the home sharing/computer app?

Its really good, about time.

There are some bugs. If you spend a while in Music Videos and go back to albums it might say "null" or there is no content. Then if you go back to Music Videos it will say there is nothing there again. If you close the app and restart it works properly.

Finally.... I was looking for a better view :D

Not sure it is was related, but i also had to sign out and back in to iTunes account afterwards on Apple TV as no movie purchases nor TV shows listed ,.. But were there in iTunes.

I dunno which is better, the new Computers interface or the fact now thumbnails take long to load with heaps onscreen

oh well. Just call me a 'Jolly Roger'
