The last few Apple releases (iPad Pro 9.7", Apple Watch 2, MacBookPro's 2016) have made me mostly ignorant and simply tired. The only thing that I"m interested in is the actual keynote introducing the MacPro.
All the speculation is not useful because all components would have been available to Apple already.
I do not trust any "great concept" anymore unless it hits the stores.
Even the Trashcan MacPro wasn't really available.
Also, consider the price points Apple recently demands.
I'm still very sceptical.

At first glance I would guess this design has multiple technical problems (like heat dissipation and being too thin to not get knocked over when on the floor).

That said, I love it and it is very creative. I still like the aluminum cheese grater aesthetic, it just needs to be slimmed down and modernized a bit. The touch ID/OLED status strip on the front is very cool. I could see something similar to this but maybe 1.5X to 2X larger to add room for fans and such, still looking good, being stable either above or below the desk surface, and working from a technical standpoint.

If it were viable, I would totally want to buy that machine.

The monitor I'm more negative about (no way do you round off the corners of a pro screen for starters). I don't think the foot is wide to enough to make it stable either. Then we'd have "tip-gate".

Hartmut Esslinger and Frogdesign already developed the modular Mac over 30 years ago for Apple ...

The new Mac Pro would need full-size PCI-E slots for one (or more) full-length non-proprietary video cards, upgradable memory, and upgradable standard SSDs and HDDs to be taken seriously.

Those components should also be new, not a generation or two behind. And the price should be reasonable, not heavily Apple-taxed.

Anything less is pointless.

but why? meh.

with a desktop, it should not be in the way. and for a modular desktop it should not clutter your expansion, as they will be your interface when utilizing and interacting with the computer, not solving a problem with something like that. and the awkward design of the monitor stand ??

I always imagined a modular system to be like a series of Mac mini's, which would snap together, lego style, to give you the config you desire.

Start with a CPU unit, say 4 core, snap on another to give you 8, another makes 12, etc, stick a HD unit on that, or as many as you like, and so on.

OK I know it's simplistic and probably unworkable, but just thought that would be a way of giving people the ultimate range of choice.

As some others have said already, I think this misses the mark, though it's well designed and looks nice, it doesn't really fall into line of what Apple probably wants the next Mac Pro to look like.

Also, I just had to. :p

Could make a swanky Mac Mini though!

Why not resurrect the form factor of the NeXT cube computer. That was modular was it not?

Just modernize the internal components and ensure proper ventilation.

It was Steve's pride and joy. But yes I know, Apple never looks back.

Interesting concept though the form factor is better suited for a non power user Mac in terms of size and the way everything is so neatly packed in. A bit gimmicky the way it opens. I'd just hope Apple gives something larger with good air flow, watch out for those pesky thermal dead ends, Apple.
We don't need to open our computers super easily since access to internals is not happening all the time. A basic door with some empty space inside for air and expandability. A liberal collection of necessary ports is important and this concept appears to have that going for it.

20 water cooled CPU cores, 4 x GPUs, 2 x 20TB internal raids, 2 X 2TB SSDs, sockets for everything, everything user upgradable in a case that is as big as it must be. IOS and OSX minus all the teeny trash apps. And a brand new pro industry based design team that haven't heard of Cook and Ive. Make Cook and Ive watch this and think about what they did. An 8K 50" x 25" monitor. No Bluetooth. It doesn't work. No Wifi either. Pros wire everything. 4 x XLR audio inputs + Phantom power. Bundled with FCPX and a new Photoshop beating app plus a new pro version of Soundtrack. Burn iMovie, Garageband, Photos and iTunes. They're too stupid for words. No more than 15% profit margin. Extend that across all Apple products. Put me in charge.

I love how this new mac pro idea downscales from the current dual GPU setup to one GPU... God.
