Concerns about the 11.6 Macbook Air

I sense a whole lot of teasing going on and I'm bewildered by this long discussion of a term for a computer.

Returning my 11"
I ordered an 11" - it will be here Wednesday. I already have a return authorization number for it. After testing them at the Apple Store and seeing how incredibly quiet the speakers are compared to the 13" Air. I considered getting the 13" at this point, but after I add 4GB of RAM the price is too high for such a low powered machine. I found a 15" i5 Antiglare (which makes it lighter) for $1,649 on the refurbished section. No contest!

The antiglare screen makes it significantly lighter than the standard glass models. Plus, I freaked out at the thought that I would be buying my slowest computer since my 12" PB. Slower than my 1.83GHz MB Core Duo from 4.5 years ago.

Ah, it removes the glass panel. Okay... Well it depends on what you do really... But having a SSD has made the biggest impact for me speed wise in the last 15 years. I'm not worried about CPU speed.

Very true. I had on in my previous MBP for a short time. As soon as they come down i price a bit more, I'll be getting one for my new machine. SSDs rock!
or you may want to wait and see what the next refresh of 13" MBP/MacBook brings?
you *might* have all the performance of MBP and the features of MBA.
What about those of us who have an 11 inch already ordered (mine should arrive on the 27th) who happily and contentedly consider it a 'netbook'?
It's my new upgraded netbook. "Ultra portable laptop" is just too precious now that the category of ultralights is becoming so ubiquitous.
According to dict.leo.org, this word exists in German as well ... 🙂

Yea because it's of latin descent. Pretty much every latin word "exists" in German. But it's veerrrrrryyy uncommon 🙂

I thought I had made clear that my problem with those who called the 11 inch MBA a "netbook" was that they were doing so in order to needle those of you who had ordered one. I accept that if one uses the word "netbook" in a way that it hasn't been used before so that it includes small and lightweight computers that have internal components matching those in larger computers and a full sized keyboard, too, then I agree with you that the new 11 inch MBA is a netbook.

Might want to read your links tough guy. The second link even makes a point that calling the M11x a netbook is ridiculous. Because, well, it isn't.
Also go read Engadget's review for the Lenovo. Guess what they call it? Here's a hint: not a netbook.

Looking at those images, you don't really give up that much. Yes, there's area lost at top and bottom, but you can use a hidden dock or move it to the side.

Decent example, but since I'm accustomed to using a Hi-Res display on my current 15" MBP (1680x1050), I found that both of the new MBA Netbooks looked a little cloudy by comparison, with the 11" looking both cloudy and cramped when scrolling the same page or trying to load an embedded video that wouldn't quite fit into the window without cropping off the top or bottom.

The MBA does lack standard features of larger computers: no optical drive, no ethernet port, lack of ability to use standard format drives (the Dell Mini 9 had only support for pci-e ssd drives, the MBA introduces a new flash format connector), and lack of support for standard RAM (even the dell mini 9 could be upgraded with standard RAM).
Interesting side note: I'm using my current netbook, a Dell Mini 9, to type this at a restaurant.
"Slowest computer" probably depends on how you use your machine. I have a 1.83GHz iMac CD, 2GB RAM, and it scores 110 in XBench. Most apps take 5-10 seconds to open.
Conversely, 11" 1.4GHz MBA's, with 2GB RAM, are scoring ~125 in XBench. 13" 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM, are scoring ~160 in XBench. And on both new MBA's, apps take 2-3 seconds to open.
Real-world use, MBA's are faster than our old Core Duo systems. Now, if you use Handbrake, Photoshop, etc, THEN it would definitely be slower...
