retarded... With all the drama that it is going to be to get it working (if you ever do) I would think just paying more for a dell or hp of equal specks would be easier...

I agree.. what a waste...

Firstly, a dell or HP of equal specs would more than likely be cheaper. (Not always true though)

Secondly, installing windows on a Mac is just as easy as it is on a Dell or HP. I don't get why it is "retarded".

An Island in the Salish Sea
Earlier this year... George Ou at ZDNet - who is not by any imagination a Mac Fan - wrote about the current Mac Pros, and said "...it’s the cheapest name brand dual-processor workstation on the market IF you know how to buy third party memory and storage." He was surprised ("stunned" was the word he used) since he often states that Apple systems are overpriced.

He often creates Frankenstein type systems that mimic the Apple systems in function, if not in form. And cost much much less. His All in One clone was pretty scary. Large flat-screen monitor with a plywood box hanging off the back. Lots of wires. He thought he might make it look better by painting the plywood black. :) Seriously.

If you needed a good Windows workstation, a Mac Pro is not a bad way to go. So what if he doesn't actually use OS X (yet). Apple still sold it, and made their profit. No support costs to Apple. And if there is a sizeable increase in Mac Pro sales, isn't that good for all Mac Pro users?

What models do you refer to? I've looked very recently, and when I compared units with the exact same level of components to the "stock" MP (no upgrades through BTO). I found the MP to be substantially less expensive, by $1000 ~ 1300. Its even cheaper than building a unit on my own.

Even after upgrading the MP with after market parts, the final cost is around the other machines, with less hardware (2GB mem, 500GB HDD, basic video).

Upgrades (for cost comparison only)
8GB RAM
4X 500GB HDD
Areca ARC-1680LP RAID card (CalDigit RAID I'm interested in is less $$$)
nVidia GeForce 8800GT (not DIY'd)

Thanks,
David.
