Now we know why the Lord God Jobs won't be delivering the keynote at MacWorld.

After learning of the bone-headed decision to ship a high-end laptop with a battery that the user can't swapped - the board fired Jobs for too many idiotic moves in a row.

Mini DisplayPort. No 1394 in MacBooks. MacBook Air. Apple TV. The missing mini-tower. The obsession with "thin".

Now now, I love my Apple TV! Even if it is only a hobby - it is a cool thing to have, and I love having every TV show and movie as well as YouTube, Music and Photos on it!

I'll agree with FW on the MacBooks.

Mini-DVI and Mini DisplayPort makes no sense

Apple said they are moving all their computers to Mini DisplayPort.

So, they might keep mini-DVI for the reason described either here or at 9to5, don't remember which, that it would be helpful for switchers who already have displays.

But, why is it any easier for a switcher to buy a mini-DVI to DVI adapter than it is to buy a mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter? I think they cost approximately the same and Apple could include the adapter in the box if they really wanted to.

What would be more relevant would be to include an HDMI port, as converting from either mini-DVI or mini-DisplayPort requires two adapter cables to get to HDMI, along with a separate audio cable.

As for the FireWire 800 rumor, I'll just say it's odd to give the much neglected Mini such a nice feature after the MacBook lost all FireWire.

Apple has made weird decisions lately though!

I am going to be very upset if the mini keeps fw and my macbook doesnt.

I think it would be weird to put the outdated 400 in(which whether you like it or not, we need to move on with technology) when the 800 is completely backwards compatible (boo hoo, an adaptor).

i don't agree, thickness does make a huge difference, my friend has a big slab of plastic XPS Dell 17", and there have been many, many instances when he will have avoided taking it somewhere because of its inability to fit in bags, and generally being the heaviest thing on earth.. he looks at my MBP, and lusts after it. After getting an Air though, the MBP feels like a mammoth compared to it, and if Apple can do anything to the MBP, they can make it lighter and thinner. People who need desktop replacements that are easily portable, they can just buy an iMac, i'm sure the majority of people that actually move around with a 17" laptop would love it to be lighter.

Comparing a Macbook Air to a 17" Macbook Pro is a stupid comparison. That surafce area of the Macbook Pro is much biggest than the Macbook Air which means the comparison is completely moot, and actually pretty stupid.
Comparing a 17" inch computer that is thinner than a Macbook Pro to the current Macbook Pro would result in a computer than doesn't feel much more portable. We're not talking about a behemoth 17" Dell XPS, the Macbook Pro is already thin, making a little bit thinner isn't going to have major portability increases at ALL.
Using a built in battery ins't going to halve the thickness of the computer, there is a limit, not only due to the components in the machine, but heat become a greater issue with faster specs.
You're example of a Macbook Air compared to Macbook Pro is not apt.

And you saying people who want a desktop replacement that's portable can get an iMac is even stupider. An iMac isn't a desktop replacement, nor is it portable. Can I use it away from the wall? NO.
Can I use it without an external keyboards and mouse? NO.
Can I actually use it on the move? NO

The iMac is not a desktop replacement, it is a desktop however neatly it sits on the desk.

The Macbook Pro IS a portable desktop replacement. So having a slightly thinner case, which I've pointed out doesn't mean much, at the sacrifice of any function (I've pointed out previously the draw backs) is stupid.

It sounds like you want an very portable computer, well get a Macbook Air. Or just a Macbook, or a 15 inch Macbook Pro. It seems don't actually want a 17-inch computer.

I don't think there's going to be a 17-inch macbook pro. Why would the 17-inch would be soo different then the 15-inch?

Also. 17-inch notebooks is too damn big.

lol epic fail.

this has to be the ultimate burn thread
we need a new smiliy with an erectile middle finger, just for this thread

Well, thank goodness for the FW800 port on the Mini.
This confirms my theory: the reason Apple left FW off the NEW MacBook was to keep the old inventory moving. Quite smart really.

Never in my life have I seen such a feeding frenzy over a little computer which is sold with no monitor, no keyboard, no mouse! you are all acting like this new "rumored" Mini is the coming of Christ.

Sad!

we're reading a lot of people complaining but can anyone actually name real world situations with their 17" MBPs where they've needed to change the battery after 6 hours?

Yes, international flights in coach class. Or attending conferences where the sea-of-chairs doesn't have power outlets.

surely the people who move around a lot away from a power source wouldn't want a big heavy 17" in the first place, and would surely prefer using a 15"??!

Speak for yourself, I am frequently away from power, and I want screen real-estate.

17" laptops are meant to be desktop replacements that can be occasionally used away from a power source

Where do you get THAT idea from? Is that in some Official Apple Document that I missed? It's a LAPTOP, so it's meant to be, um, a LAPTOP.

i'm sure some sort of external battery will be developed by apple or a 3rd party to cater for the few that do need the extra power.

It would have to be Apple because to the best of my knowledge, Apple still hasn't licensed the MagSafe patent to anyone else to produce products for. And to do that, Apple would have to admit that there's a defect in their oh-so-precious design, so good luck ever seeing that product come out.

-- And granted i'm larger than most, but 17" is too big to use in coach

I beg to differ. I do it all the time. And I am also "larger than most". In coach.[/QUOTE]

I love how your entire argument is summed up as "I can't possibly see MYSELF doing this, so nobody else must be willing to do it either," whether it's using a 17" in coach, or being a road-warrior who uses a 17", because YOU can't picture yourself doing it, you leap to the conclusion that nobody else could possibly be doing it.

From my experience the majority of people using 17" need it for hardcore apps, and wouldn't dream of being away from a power source in the first place, instead of saying 'Pros' will be outraged, can we get some actual examples of why? I consider myself a Pro user and i love the idea of this battery if it means longer life and a thinner, possibly lighter laptop.

Again, I use my laptop primarily for opening a lot of windows simultaneously. They're all, for the most part, very low CPU (except for my VMware window to run the occasional IE session when needed), but there's just a ton of them. Hence I get a 17" for screen real estate. Also, on flights, watching movies on a 17" is awesome.

In summary - just because YOU don't do something, don't be surprised that lots of the rest of us are happily doing those things.

Your on a site for geeks on the verge of the biggest show of the year for us.

Not even fitting in on a site on the internet.....sad!:p

MacPredictions.com predicts the 17-inch will be a new addition to the "Air" line and not the "Pro" line... which explains the fixed battery.

Nice screen real estate, rumored LONGER battery life, "Air" thin unibody... as long as Apple doesn't skimp on the power offering... this could be a VERY SLEEK creative powerhouse machine. It can bring new life to their "Air" line.

I think creative professionals will be all over this (if close to the mentioned features). Maybe Apple will bring the MATTE option back for this portable... because the current Air does not have the FULL glass screen like the new MacBooks.

Think about it: one portable, sleek 17" option for designers and editors on the go... MacBook Air Pro??? LOL.

That would sense of these rumors/leaks. They'd still have the regular 17" mbp that would look like the recently redesigned mbp and mb and then ADD another 17" to the air lineup. i'm not sure I see a use for an ultra-portable laptop that's got a 17" screen though.

You know, I suddenly started thinking (for a change)...

What if this integrated battery is only an OPTION?

You know, you can buy the one with the removable battery that lasts 5 hours, or choose the non-removable model that gets 7.5 hours.

I didn't think of this before...this would be 100% awesome because I can totally see different types of people deciding different models.

If this is it, we're going to feel pretty stupid for complaining (myself included) Oh what the heck, when have we EVER admitted when we're wrong! :D

That essentially makes two different products as far as manufacturing is concerned.

One thing I wonder about regarding this non-removable battery is how you would remove/upgrade your ram modules.
Normally when doing something like that you unplug the power and remove the battery, so there is no power coursing around the system.
How would this be done if the battery cannot be removed I wonder?
Also, I just like to say that in my last 3 Apple notebooks ( MPB, Macbook, and Powerbook) I've had, each needed to have the battery replaced under warranty. It was simply a matter of Apple shipping me a new battery and upon receiving it I ship the defective one back to them.
How would that work now?
I'd have to ship my whole computer out because of a battery problem?
And before you say to just take it in to an Apple Store, they can do it in minutes, remember, I have about a 5 hour drive (one-way) to the nearest Apple store.

How is it done on the Air?

Great news!
Fixed battery for better life and presumably giving Apple more chance of making the 17" even thinner!
About the not being able to replace your own battery.... come on. If you have an issue with your battery just drop it @ your local Apple Store or dealer, they replace it in a few minutes.
If this decision gives you 50% more life, you'll love a fixed battery!

My "local" Apple store is about 5 hours away. How close is yours?

That essentially makes two different products as far as manufacturing is concerned.

As far as manufacturing is concerned they already have 5 models (plastic Macbook, aluminum Macbook, 15" pro, 17" pro, and Air.)

They'll probably drop the plastic one soon and will be back to 4. Is it totally impossible that they'll go back up to 5 again?

KICK @$$! POST

Too bad those that agree with him won't get it.

But I too am in your boat, using my 17" for FCP and Aperture and iWeb and Numbers and so forth on the go.

Being a complete fat @$$ and fitting my 17" on Starbucks coffee tables and coach flights. Being a road warrior taking 10 hour trips to South Carolina and trekking through the woods ever so often, needing a HD footage dumping machine in the field and NEEDING more than 4-6 hours of battery life.

p.s. why would you want a thinner 17" You don't spend $3000 on a 17" because you want it to be thin as hell with no ports or fast processors or GFX cards just to watch movies on.... at least I hope not.
