lol epic fail.
NO! it's not an epic fail... it's an epic win because i think the 17-inch model is unnecessary for us... mobile users. 17-inch to me is too heavy and i think apple would save alot of time and money on creating this rumored 17-inch laptop. Just like they discontinued producing the matte screen on the current unibody models.

Jobs does not believe in choice

You know, I suddenly started thinking (for a change)...

What if this integrated battery is only an OPTION?

Nope. It's been "Steve's way" or "the highway" since the second coming.

Only Jobs' retirement will bring up the possibility of the buyer choosing the system that they want.

8GB standard.

And that would still be behind the curve as far as high end goes. Dell has a 17" that takes 16GB. At a sky high price of course.

Do you realize how much 8GB of ddr3 is? Maybe they could do 8GB of ddr2, but there is no way they would put 8GB standard. And I have a feeling that those dells don't take ddr3 RAM.

FW? Pinch me, I'm dreaming!

If the Mini does retain a FW port, I'll be upgrading for the first time in 8 years!!! :D

Well, I did get an iBook 3 years ago, but only because my older one was stolen. I turned down an offer to use someone's 25% employee discount 2 years in a row, because there just wasn't a Mac with the specs I wanted.

Anyway, we'll find out soon enough.

As for all the uproar about non-removable batteries, I'd say just wait and see. If true, I maybe Apple will release a portable power pack (or licenses magsafe to someone else who comes out with one). If you're willing to lug around a 17" laptop and extra batteries, a power pack shouldn't be a big deal.

If you think about it, this isn't a total surprise, since it's the norm for all the iPods and iPhones, as well as the MB Air. And I'd bet the vast majority of people with their panties in a knot aren't even in the market for a 17" laptop, as was the case with all the whining about the iPhone battery

Never in my life have I seen such a feeding frenzy over a little computer which is sold with no monitor, no keyboard, no mouse! you are all acting like this new "rumored" Mini is the coming of Christ.

Sad!

Some of us can't afford anything but a Mac mini.

Besides, why would I want to buy yet another monitor, keyboard or mouse? The ones I already have work fine.

its not. ram is soldiered in.

good point about the ram

The unibody Macbook needs to be opened to swap the RAM. That's quite a lot of screws. I guess the battery on the 17" would be similar to the Macbook Air's battery. You need remoce lots of screws to access the battery, but you can still easily do it yourself once your original battery doesn't hold up enough charge anymore.

It's a bold more indeed to make a fixed battery so I suppose Apple has a reason to do so. I could seriously imagine Apple to put one of those high tech batteries in there so you have 8-10 hours of battery life. You save quite some space (especially with very flat and wide form factors) if you don't have to put another metal case around the battery assembly. A 17" laptop has quite a lot of surface. I imagine a weirdly shaped battery that goes below the logic board, drives and fills up the remainig empty spaces efficiently. You can't use all the space efficiently with a rectangular shaped battery.

I'd love a battery pack though. Something with the same footprint as the laptop, just with an upward slope so you have the keyboard at a more comfortable angle, and a retractable Magsafe cable.

Very true, it would be expensive if it's standard. So I do hope they don't make them standard and soldered to the board to prevent upgrading.

The Dell however, does have DDR3 RAM up to 16GB if you can afford it.

YES! it's an epic fail... it's not an epic win because i think the 17-inch model is unnecessary for ME... light users. 17-inch to me is too heavy and i think apple would waste alot of time and money on creating this rumored consumer 17-inch laptop. Just like they did when they discontinued producing the matte screen on the current unibody models. So they should make it for PROFESSIONALs or heavy lifters that need a true desktop replacement.

Fixed that somewhat for you.

I put the quotes to indicate a general adjective.

That is not how to use quotes. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "a general adjective."

I'm picking on you because this topic bores me. For future reference, it's OK to leave Mac without quotes, or italicize for emphasis. There is no need to go running around inventing your own techniques. Also, the word 'Mac' in your usage is a noun, not an adjective.

I like this move tremendously.

While it cannot be removed, ~50% more battery life is a HUGE improvement.

Nope. It's been "Steve's way" or "the highway" since the second coming.

If the Macbook Air had replaced the regular Macbook, then you'd have a point.

But they're still selling both of those models...

I've never pulled my battery out except to access the RAM and HD. But I still don't like the idea of locked-in, Apple-controlled battery removal. m-nus

The ease of taking out the battery is really for those who swap their batteries around (travelers, etc.)

The MBA's battery can be replaced in under 15 minutes. I imagine the new 17" would be similar. So there is no harm done. What's the big deal? A large laptop is not really for travelers anyhow.

they better be producing enough mini's! I smell a ton of orders (at least if they don't go crazy on the price)!

My order goes in Tuesday if all holds! :D

agreed, how many "pro's" are really traveling without a power supply?

Most of the people who thinks they are "pro" are not reli "pro" If you are reli a "pro" u use a lot of CPU intensive task, liek editing video, audio recording, 3D modeling. I doubt any battery will do any good. AC is your best freind

The correct spelling is really, not reli, we're not texting here.

thats such a stupid argument imo.

many have invested a lot of time learning osx and in osx sofware but because of present funds, they must buy a crippled mini at the same price as a decently high powered pc.

the cost of a pc is not just the hardware, but also all the software
Hey... just a suggestion!:D
And you seemed to sort of agree with me... "same price as a decently high powered pc."

i'd love one, but what about blueray? can this mini be upgraded in the near future when blueray is available on a mac, or would you have to buy a new one built to support blueray?

A lot, and I hope close minded people stop saying, "No one travels with a 17" MBP...."

Because it's obviously not true.

I think people just have the wrong idea. They think that traveling with a 17 inch laptop is cumbersome simply because it is. If I'm going on a trip to Mexico to climb mountains that's going to be awkward with a 17 inch laptop. However, that's not what this laptop is intended for. It's a mobile workstation. This is for when you need a mobile office, or you work on a film set and need your machine with you, or you're going on a tethered photoshoot.

PS: I normally don't like PC laptops, but I'm really digging that one you just posted a while back.
