I miss the special effects and presentation mode with iChat that isn't there with Facetime. Maybe this is a reboot with new ideas for Facetime that will get more traction with more folks this time.

Did anyone else notice they are a full-windows-only shop?
Outfits like this usually has the implementation of their tech in a portable language like C or Java for platform migration. If anything, not dealing with the Windows kernal will improve the performance.

This technology could be so useful in cars, car would be able to tell when a driver would be tired or distracted. I don't know if Teslas already do this though.
Tesla is absolutely not the top company when it comes to stuff like this. Neither is Toyota, but they had eye tracking drowsiness detection as far back as 2006 in Lexus models.

Putting a face on Siri... that would help to differentiate her from the other digital assistants.

What's the point of having a face to match the voice when the voice of Siri is still terrible and extremely robotic. Looking at your voice assistant is going to fun at first I'd assume, but most people probably don't want to be staring at their phone when they want to find out what the tallest mountain on pluto is.

On the other hand, giving Siri a face on your Apple watch = kinda cool and fitting.

If that first image is supposed to imply that the motion capture on the right is from the actor on the left, then it has a looooong way to go. The mouth is not only totally wrong, but doesn't convey the particular sentiment that is depicted by the actor. Plus, the eyes in both creature images are exactly the same, despite considerably different eye expressions from the actor. Thank god Hollywood has better tech.

Count me and I am sure a few others out , I (we) have not been waiting.

:D I wasn't actually being serious!!:p Sorry the ';)' smiley didn't tip you off to that!

I was jokingly/sarcastically expressing my genuine hope this acquisition is for something useful and interesting, not frivolous and of little value to users. Not there isn't a place for frivolity, but I'd personally rather Apple were concentrating on the many other things that could do with some work instead of 'fun' stuff right now.

The demo material is super cheesy but very impressive to capture motion that accurately without all the usual dots. And real time. Not sure why apple would want it, most of the uses I can imagine would be better suited for other companies.

Google has Magic Leap. Apple has to start planning for the world of augmented reality.

The video gives a much better example of the results, the stills aren't really useful.

The Feds are already on Apple's case for having encryption they can't crack, imagine how popular they'll be if the give users the facility to alter their appearance on the fly in digital communications!!!! ;)

Not to worry, I got it , but I have a warped sense of humor, and I don't put emoji or flags after my snarkies.

I agree, the current Apple has a lot of worms to take care off . I think their growth is taking its toll, as they probably can't get enough qualified personnel to address everything they SHOULD be doing.

Usually in any company when the chips are down it's the same few players to save the day.

they are gonna have an animated hologram of tim cook with facial gestures by a trained actor for next keynote. it could be an improvement.

I believe this will be used for better HCI (human-computer interaction). A digital assistant would be much better at understanding the user if it knows what kind of facial expressions the user is doing. In conjunction with emotion recognition from speech technology, it can be very helpful in siri on Apple TV/iPhone or in a future Apple Car, especially to detect fatigue/distraction (like someone already mentioned). A digital assistant would be able to detect sarcasm, jokes, context and much more.

This is great news for Dan Riccio, now he can appear neatly coiffeured without having some shredded wheat stapled to his head...
