I did this yesterday, and it worked flawlessly. I am posting from the iphone now, actually.

I think it's best if you go to the att store since they can do it for sure

I can confirm that this has worked on all of my lines as well.

We had no problems just activating in iTunes and then we became eligible.

On July 11th we all walked in with 300 dollars, and walked out with new iPhones!

611 and Customer Support heavily downplays the thought of even doing this on your lines, as I was told that it isnt good on the "Corporate End Of Things".
But the representative was cool, and said to keep doing it as long as it lasts!

How in the world did you guys get this to work? I argued with the lady for 15 minutes and she told me it couldn't be done. I'm not eligible but my mom is. They told me that once the Iphone was activated or whatever the number could never be changed on it. My mom got sick of it and just told them to open up a brand new line with a new number.

So what can I do now? Anyway I can use my old number with the Iphone and switch plans? I still have the old number's line open, and it will remain open until it's contract is up next august.

At no time has att ever discouraged this practice. Under "normal" conditions, ie a purchase of a non-iPhone a rep in the store (att) would recommend this almost 99% of the time. Go to the store buy it, then ask to have the imei changed. Standing in line with me Friday morning was about a half dozen people including myself who were doing this very thing. That was just the immediate people around me, nevermind how many of the other 200 or so people around.

This is legitimate, appropriate and completely "legal."

Are the stores preventing people from opening new lines on a family plan and buying iPhones for those new lines? Would they require the people who are going to use those lines to be there at the time of purchase?

Dont listen to the Att people at all because they are all a bunch of idiots and really unorganized.

I WAS ABLE TO TRANSFER ELIBILITY or you can say work around it.

First I made the sure the line that non eligible for a upgrade had a 3g sim card (you can just ask any Att store to replace your old sim card if it is not 3g). Then I went to an Apple store and activated the upgrade eligible line so i got the 299 price for the 16gb. Then i called Att, CSR (and keep calling if you get one of those idiots) and I told them i wanted to move the data plan to the non-eligible line and make that the iphone line. After she said it was moved, I then switch sim cards meaning whatever line i wanted on the iphone, i moved that sim card into that phone.

And it worked 100%. I can confirm it.

I don't understand..... I've been upgrading my phones on average 9-10 months and was still getting a discount on each phone.

Now I can't receive a discount because it hasn't been a year with my current phone (Blackjack II).

Does anyone know why?
