I'm pretty sure that when you surf the web on that phone you're broadcasting the fact that you're using an iPhone via HTTP_USER_AGENT.

Once ATT finds out you are using a smartphone and only paying for a dumb phone they will either terminate your contract and charge you the ETF or just bend over and let you keep taking advantage of them. Have fun wizard.

I bet at&t doesn't care as much as you think. 1) It's a Verizon iPhone so it's not like it's one less iPhone for at&t and 2) they didn't have to subsidize it in any way so all they're doing is collecting $$$ from you.

This...

Think about it, a Basic iPhone is 650 bucks if you buy it off contract (as I did for the iPhone 5). You pay $200 after subsidy right? So that leaves $450 + interest (interest because if the carrier had been paid 650 instead of 200, they would have 450 to use but 2 years instead of getting "paid back) for the carriers to recoup by giving you that 650 phone for only 200. Over a 24 month contract, about $20 of your bill goes to just paying back the carrier for your phone! So yeah you got that data plan for only $10, but figure the carrier isn't taking it in the shorts each month for $20, that means it really is like a $30 plan. I can see why AT&T wouldn't care necessarily.

That doesn't mean that if suddenly a lot of unknown phones suddenly showed up they wouldn't try to figure it out.

Personally, I wish our carriers had options to just pay for a phone outright and save yourself $20 a month. I would take advantage. I mean I already paid for my most recent iPhone completely out of pocket, it would be great for me to get the newest one every year and hand my old one to my wife and always have the discount. Right now I am paying full price for my plan for a phone I paid full price for.... stinks!

Why are people so butt hurt over this? OP is just trying to share a way to get cheap and unlimited data. That's a nice gesture no matter what.
The replies here sound like they wish AT&T took away his $10 plan. Does that make everyone feel better?

thats a great find, wonder if ATT will detect since its not their device

They can tell from the IMEI what kind of phone it is. I remember back in 2007 when I unlocked the original iPhone (which was very difficult back then) the T-Mobile CSR was able to see I was using an iPhone when I called about another matter.

I did the same
As the op except with blackberries for years! AT&T is not gonna catch you. They won't be able to because if it's not AT&T branded they have no way of knowing what type of phone it is ( I would also put android phones on the $10 plan)

so you need a Verizon iPhone, thats connected to the Verizon network, or ATT network?

I'm not sure I follow here. Or is it an IP5 from Verizon but connected to ATT (voice and data)?

IF it shows up in their system. The Galaxy Nexus from the Google play store shows up as nothing. In fact if you call, you can tell them it's a regular flip phone.

Nobody is 'butt hurt' (what, are you 12?) over this. Posting that you have found a 'loop hole' that you haven't even exploited for 24 hours is disingenuous. Come back when you have a month or two of data verifying that this works. I predict silence because it won't.

I'm not the OP but I can confirm that it worked when I had my Android. They never added a smartphone plan for over a year until I sold it and got the i5.
And your post sounds really "butt hurt" if you haven't realized yourself. Does that bother you whether the loop hole works or not?
