Yup, a $100 billion corner. An awful predicament indeed.

With the price gap now narrowed significantly between the air and mini (retina models). And the weight factor gap also being narrowed. Going forward I see more consumers buying the Ipad Air over the mini. And if they are able to make the full sized even lighter in the next few releases. I would put money on the mini losing allot of steam.

Nobody denies that. But history has many examples of multibillion dollar companies becoming too fat and ignorant and falling into abyss. Apple is no longer Steve's "Be hungry. Be foolish."

It's funny that right now apple only has to worry about competing with apple. The mini made allot more sense to me when I had an Ipad 3. Which I gave to my mom and now feels like holding a brick.

Up until I had the air in my hands the mini was what I was planning on buying.

I highly doubt that cause 8" tabs is where the demand is going right now. 1st gen mini was only 1% behind ipad 4 last year.

If anything Apple will expand on the mini line. There is much higher demand for the mini than full size.

10-inch format was "set in stone" by Steve Jobs, just like iPhone's 3.5 inch. He was very radical and ridiculed both 4"+ phone size and 7-8" tablet size. But years of usage by millions of users proved that for a phone 4.5-5.5" size is more optimal. Same with 10" size. People are turning more and more to a book-reader screen size - 7-8". It's the same size as pocket books, organizers, pocket notebooks (paper), travel guides, etc. - there's a reason this size is so popular, and that reason is that something is useless if you don't have it with you.

10-inch size is awkward and eventually, you'll find yourself carrying it less and less and leaving it at home and then it becomes just a home appliance like a TV.

Steve Jobs said the 7" tablets rushed to market in 2010 were dead in the water. He was right. He never said that Apple would never make a smaller tablet. True, it came out during the Apple vs. Samsung case that he had to be convinced to approve the iPad mini, but he did approve it. Also, as Apple has pointed out, there's a HUGE difference between a 16x9 7" screen and a 4x3 7.85" screen. The latter is about 43% larger.

Ive had both my 4 and rmini at the same time for a couple of wks now. I use the 4 for web browsing and the rmini for everything else.

Rmini is great for web browsing but I think becomes tiring after hours of zooming, panning, scrolling etc

Also thinking mini is not for me. Or I got a dud. Screen hurts my eyes. Not sure it's the small size but more the backlight hurting as it seems to shine through. That's the best I can describe.

I don't see any light bleed but reading books in amazon kindle app using sepia shows the top half to be whiter and the bottom to be sepia'er. Turning it upside down makes the whole screen a lot more even, as if the screen was put in upside down or it's just a crap panel with crap viewing angle.

Putting kindle app on white blinds me. It's no way an enjoyable experince and I've started to stop sleeping. I've been unable to go sleep untill early hours of the morning, something i haven't done for years.

The only real way to enjoy the mini is too put it on black/white mode as turning down the backlight just makes it crap, especially so in kindle app or iBooks.

Using my iPad 4 now and it's amazing every time everything I see on it. There is no harsh glare or anything. Same with my iPhone 5s

I really would like a mini. Are they all like this or maybe it's just a duff display

Well my iMac is freaking on a hardware level, so the rMini had to go back.

As far as portability, for me it was being able to hold the iPad in your hand for longer periods of time without strain. The eye strain part was resolved with the retina (the gamut did not bug me for the few days I had it.)
For me, smaller the size, the better for my commute.

I enjoyed the rMini, but I given my shaky history with iPads, I probably won't miss it especially if the future iPhones have a bigger screen.

I think whatever works for the buyer is just fine. If it's the Mini, the Air, both or none, great.

They are a wonderful product. Glad folks are happy with their choices.

I still have both and one will be going back in a week or so. I decided to give my mini another shot. Definitely enjoy the form factor. Just so easy to hold and manipulate. Screen size is a bit small, so the question is whether or not I can get used to the screen size for something that will be my primary tablet. The mini changes my typical usage. I find myself using landscape much more for browsing the web otherwise the text becomes way too small. Reading on the kindle seems a lot more enjoyable because the device is easier to hold and the screen size seems just right for long form ebook reading. Typing is also much easier on the mini than the Air.

If the mini hurts your eyes then you need glasses. Im serious. The mini shouldnt be hurting anyones eyes for any person who has good vision. I bet most people who find the mini too small, dont wear glasses.

So why doesn't my iPhone hurt my eyes?

And besides what difference would size make in iBooks or kindle apps , text is scaled bigger if I want. Like I originally said It's something about the screen and backlight.
