I won't because I already had a warranty replacement and my replacement is unlocked, so I don't see a need to go jumping hoops.

agreed, anyway i returned it and will wait for few more days to get the official unlocked iPhone 4S.

I am kinda a watching the other thread about the battery gate.

i want to get iPhone 4S before my trip to LV during thanksgiving week, the battery gate issue putting me off and unlocked iPhone 4S going to take few days to reach the retail stores.

Upgraded to 5.0.1 and iPhone is still unlocked. Tested with T-Mobile microSIM.

Overseas restore

I have an iPhone 4S carrier unlocked. Is it possible for me to restore my iPhone overseas and activate it again? Currently, I have SOS only while using my original sim card since I moved to another country for holidays. But I need to restore my iPhone. Anyone got experience with this?

To all foreign buyers. There is no consistency among apple stores employees on what they can and cannot sell without a US ID and SSN. Most stores will readily sell at&t phones at full price and not require a single document. In some stores (like the store in philadelphia on walnut street) staff lack any customer interaction training - all they've been trained to say is "no". There is a tall fat bold guy with a beard at the store who just hates customers, i think. So, if someone refuses to sell a phone at full price to you because you dont have a us id or ssn that's illegal and you should speak to the store's manager. Good luck!

I'm a foreign buyer, i bought my phone from the Apple store in Omaha Nebraska, no one asked me for any ID, and contrary to your statement the Reps in the store seemed to me that they knew what they were doing. In fact when a store is as you described, the blame should go to the store manager. In fact the rep that spoke to me gave me the assurance that the phone will never be locked and made reference to the iphone 4, before the officially unlocked phone came out, those who bought theirs at full price had unlocked phones.
So pls dont condemn all Apple staff outright, in every organisation there are bad eggs.

about time you realize the wonderful world of reading! Still doubt about att device only being unlock forever ever ever.......

Look, it's clear that don't get that some of us want to make sure our $800 purchases STAY unlocked. Clearly, several of us ARE concerned. Perhaps you're young.
Perhaps your parents buy your electronics, I don't really care. But instead of (oddly) repeatedly insulting me, like some bizarre middle school bully, how about you just ignore my posts, and run along and play, k?

I've not received the Unlocked Msg

I just got another device only from apple. Put my AT&T SIM in it from my AT&T iPhone 4S (which I'm returning today). Set it up activated thru iTunes. Restored by backup but never got Unlock Message. What am I doing wrong?

Go back to the Apple Store and state that you paid full price for your iPhone (bring proof such as a receipt) and demand that they give you the appropriate unlocked iPhone. If still no luck, then call Apple and try to have them fix the issue.

Since I am also a foreign buyer, do I need to reserve the 4s one day prior to the date I want? Or I can go straight to the store and ask for an off-contract 4s by paying full price?

Thanks

lol wat? Sorry buddy but I don't live in my parents garage and having most of the apple gears from their money! I make a good living if you would like to know where I get all the product from. And you are not the only one that got the 800 bucks att iphone 4s device only! Me and my wife got both 4s att device only and do you see me asking stupid question that are already answered! No cuz all you need to do is to read carefully if you care much about your 800 investment, and pay little attention to the ppl such like me providing facts and not random rumors. Does that make sense to you? If you still have doubt just go to an apple store ask them to check your imei status! You will see that it's factory unlocked. Before you ask me how I know right?! simple my bro works there he is the one that got me the iphones 4s and 2 for himself and his gurl as well. Now the big question is uMad son?

"Stupid questions". Ie not taking a stranger's word for it based on no evidence. Thanks for yet another insult (and a little random bragging). Whatever, "bud". Where's that ignore button? Edit: there it is. Say buh bye, child.

I restored again and this time I got the message. I'm going abroad in two days and will find out. I guess. If not, it goes back to Apple.

Let me guess this straight! U don't want to take any word from a stranger and yet why are u here again? lol wat read or reread for the love of apple! There is a fact get that in your small head or brain. Once unlocked it's unlocked forever and it's in your IMEI status which will carry over and over even if you get a replacement. I know the system my bro works there.

Your phone will stay unlocked. I can confirm this because I contacted Apple about it. If you'd like to confirm yourself, I suggest you give Apple a call and I'm sure you'll get the same reply. An unlocked phone will stay unlocked and any replacements will reflect the lock-status of the phone you're replacing.

Thanks

It helps to reserve the day before. You can take your chances waiting in line, but you are only "guaranteed" of availability if you reserve it the day before and pick it up by 6:00pm.

Thanks. That's what my original post said I was pondering doing. (When the other guy chimed in). Thanks for posting. Obviously I'm not alone in my worries :)

If you actually read my message you will see that you are just repeating my point. The store in philadelphia is the bad exception. In all other stores staff tried to serve well. Paying attention is good - try it.

My bad. But let's all avoid veiled insults to fellow bloggers.

question re: unlocked & off-contract purchase of 4S.

If it's unlocked, can it EVER be activated on a CDMA/Verizion provider?

No. A CDMA phone needs to be specifically provisioned to work on a particular CDMA network.
