I'm one of the guys who bought the "off contract" iPhone 4S and it's working perfectly since October/2011. I also bought another device to a friend of mine but he wasn't as lucky as me.

I don't know what he did, but I know he didn't follow the instructions:
1) Open the box
2) Turn the phone on
3) Switch the SIM
4) Plug in on iTunes
5) Be happy

He didn't do that and now we can't "unlock" it.

I tried to restore the device with the ATT SIM, another time with my carrier SIM but we can't get to the "Congratulations. Your iPhone 4S has been unlocked".

Am I missing something?

All the devices I bought "off-contract" are working fine, besides this one.

I get this msg:

"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported."

Do you guys think it's locked? And there is nothing I can do?

Any help will be very appreciated.

I bought a Verizon 4s last year when it was first released (paid full retail price), before the official unlocked phones were available. I had to restore my phone last night and received the "congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked" message. I have never contacted Verizon to request an unlock.

Does that mean my 4s is only unlocked for international use or can I use it for AT&T? I don't have a SIM card available to test, but I am curious.

International only, to my knowledge a CDMA iPhone 4s can't just be unlocked to use it on a domestic gsm network.

I'm doing the exact samething you guys are saying but no matter what, I cant get the Congrats screen. I called att and requested an unlock, they approved and sent me an email with instructions.
I left my iphone with my sim card in there, plugged into itunes, and then I restored thru backup which didnt work. And then i restored as a new phone and still didn't work. Is it because my sim card is att or something?

Have you tried putting a non AT&T sim card in there? Maybe it is already unlocked.

I dont have a different sim card :/ is that definitely the solution?

If you have already requested an unlock and was approved. The only way to find out for sure if your phone is unlocked or not is to put a non-AT&T sim in the iPhone.

Actually, factory unlocked phones only sometimes give that message. I bought my iPhone 4 factory unlocked in Canada last year, and I've used it with 4 different carriers when traveling. However, I never see that message when I restore. The true test is to try a different carrier SIM card.

Exact same boat. Unlocked iPhone 4 in Canada, didn't get the message after iOS 6, ever. Always happened on iOS 5 & 4 though.
