Ok so I don't want to take the risk.
What about buying a Bluetooth speaker like the samsung HW-J450?
It will work with the apple tv?

That sound bar will work, but you'll only ever be able to attach one input source to it. If you have more than one source or ever plan on adding more sources you'll have no way to do so. If this is acceptable then go for it.

If you go the receiver route here are two cheap sets of speakers that get generally good reviews for their price point.

Not to get you down or anything, but I think it may be about time to retire the old Bose system. I looked up the manual for it on Bose's website and happened to notice this particular model was produced between 1998 and 2000. The thing's going on nearly 20 years old. I even saw a reference to laserdisc in the manual. Best case scenario, you're going to get stereo from your Apple TV and not surround sound.

Looks to me like your only option is to use a stereo RCA cable and connect the TV's variable audio out to one of the Bose's audio inputs. This is assuming of course, that the "variable audio out" does what I think it does.

Well said...Bose has never been a high quality speaker system...but the house wife loves it because the speakers are very small....and is okay in her living room...I would suggest B&O speakers or Vienna Acoustic...found in the Magnolia Room in Best Buy....don't buy Polk...made in Vietnam......I would get a Yamaha or Onkyo 5.1 Receiver..

1) Plug Apple TV HDMI into the input on the Yamaha receiver marked HDMI...TV....then all the audio goes into the receiver and then the speakers....then HDMI OUTPUT from Yamaha to HDMI Input on TV you own.
