Is it really impossible to have a rMBP 2012, 15-inch power the LG Ultrafine 5K? I have this older mac which I temporarily will need to use, so I want to connect it to my Ultrafine 5K display. I know the support page states that the 2012 mac is not supported, however I read a comment online from someone who was able to use this mac with the display. Unfortunately, the topic was quite outdated, so I wasn't able to ask this person about it, which brought me here.

Does anyone know of a way to connect this mac to the Ultrafine? I have a TB3>TB2 adapter which allows the mac to recognise the display, but it isn't able to produce any video output, so the screen stays black. If anyone knows of a way to get this to work I would be much appreciative.

I don't need the 5K output, 4K or even ultra-HD is more than enough to get the job done.

Yeah, what I basically did was buy the Club 3D HDMI to displayport adapter (https://www.club-3d.com/en/detail/2491/hdmi_to_displayport_4k60hz_m-f_active_adapter/) and a displayport to USB-C cable from Startech (which you can both find on Amazon) and these two adapters/cables basically solved it for me. Important to know is that you do need the ‘refreshed Ultrafine display’ as these support USB-C aside to Thunderbolt 3 which thus makes this setup possible.

In my case, the display output isn’t that perfect (as it doesn’t support any resolution that comes close to 5K, but it does work). Also, don’t forget you will need to plug in both the USB-A and the HDMI cable in your mac for this to work.

I wanted to resurrect this thread. Any idea if your setup would work with a late 2013 MBP 15in to the LG UltraFine 4k (24MD4KL) display?

This thread (scroll to bottom) states that the LG UltraFine Display works with the late 2013 MBP using Apple's adapter setup. However, it only works with Catalina installed. My machine is locked into macOS Sierra 10.12.6. This version supports older software I still need access to.
