I have a macbook pro, I want to connect wirelessly to my IMac with an external HD and use it as my time machine backup. Will this cause massive read/writes on the hard drive in the IMac as well as the time capsule? Or is there a chance it will bypass the IMac's hard drive and write straight to the external HD?

Sadly you cannot connect directly the time capsule and then move it to wireless (it saves differently).

As far as I can tell you just can’t do it. You can connect the HDD to a wireless router and back them both up wirelessly but that’s about it.

High Sierra has added an option to connect the drive to your iMac then share it to the Mac Pro as a Time Machine destination. This will not result in drive writes to the iMac's drive.

Sadly it doesn't mention the no read/write to disk, but I will take your word for it! Awesome!
