...in Salt Lake City.

And so, you know, good for you. You're definitely in one of the blessed cities, for whatever reason. It'd be nice if they added more cities to that list.

Here's Gizmodo's test results. Verizon comes in second place, those results are also on the low end of what AT&T users can generally expect. Again, it's not uncommon for AT&T users to see 5-8 Mbps at off peak times. The disparity will become more apparent if many people jump ship for Verizon too.

Yes AT&T is faster for Data where I live. But it's not just where I live either.

Take heed that Verizon throttles their 3G network in order to improve voice reliability. If you are a heavy data user you may regret a major downgrade in data speed. We are talking painfully slow if you are used to getting over 2 Mbps on AT&T. Verizon's 3G speeds really suck compared to AT&T.

It is not uncommon to be getting 5 Mbps down on AT&T and my experience with Verizon I was lucky to get 1 Mbps at off-peak hours.

Not to mention, the inability to use data and voice at the same time.

For the love of God, Captain Obvious, this has been posted many, many times. No need for a new thread.

People know already, but they might still want a Verizon phone. *Gasp*

AT&T and Verizon are not freaking football teams.
I don't get why people are being such children about this whole thing.

Indeed.

The next time you think about posting why AT&T/Verizon is bad for you... please don't. No one cares what you experience is, they only care about their own.

Give us a link to prove your claim, sounds like a baseless statement.

That's right, I live in an AT&T 3G area. Along with over 2 million of my neighbors.

There are probably 50 or 60 million between the LA and NYC metropolitan areas alone.

I'd say that in reality, the vast majority of Americans live under AT&T 3G coverage.

But let's not let little things like facts get in the way of our arguments.

Another point to consider is the great data speeds I have been experiencing have been with my iPhone 4. Tested against an iPhone 3G on the same test server I was seeing my iphone 4 hit 3 times the download and almost double upload compared to the his test at the same time. In other words, those on iPhone 3G's are not seeing the same data rates iPhone 4's are seeing. I cannot speak for the 3G(s) as I skipped that one but I bet it is similar, especially on the upload side.

There is a significant difference in the iPhone 4's download speed vs the 3G.

May I recommend the FCC speed test app. It's more accurate and consistent in my opinion.

Pretty soon even the "geographical" advantage VZW enjoys will fade as the Alltel assets come online.

Seriously, if AT&T has coverage where you frequent they're a better choice than VZW.

This is not how Verizon works. If streaming pandora or surfing the web via 3g and a call comes in that takes precedent and will stop pandora or your data. I have had a droid on vzw for over a year and never missed a call because i was using data. This is a complete misunderstanding you will always get calls and texts over pandora running trust me. If you are on a call then you cant surf the web or listen to pandora but you will not have calls go straight to vmail.

Wow, that's great!!! Oh wait....

So no data and voice at the same time? Thats insane! So if I'm surfing the web, checking email or streaming pandora my iPhone won't ring,it will just go to voice mail and I will get notified after I stop using data?
Nope, you're phone will ring. That's ludicrous to think you'll lose calls.

I have a droidx and I've not missed one phone call because I was surfing with the web browser

I am a loyal Verizon customer, and a loyal Apple customer. Therefore, I have been waiting a long time for this. The 3G issue is not huge for me, as I know 4G/LTE will be mainstream right about when my IPhone 2 year contract is up. I use the Verizon Mifi device at work and it is plenty fast for me, and I do not intend to use 3g nearly as often as wireless with my VZ Iphone.
If you have been waiting for the VZ Iphone, now is the time. Just get it and enjoy it.

Here's a screenshot from my speedtest app the other day. (would have been tuesday).

In the middle of Downtown SLC at 5:41 pm. Tons of folks nearby just getting off of work, using their iPhones (and other AT&T data devices for that matter). And I was on the commuter rail too.

Anyway, I challenge any Verizon customer to post a faster speedtest screenshot from one of their phones. And I do so knowing that this isn't even the fastest data speed I can expect to see.

That's a new oneon me, blaming the app. Guess that means my 80-100ms pings are no good then...

Yea that's right as i get ****** pings like that with speedtest.net, and get pings around 80-150 with extremelabs app.

No, they don't throttle 3G. They don't have to. Remember, voice and data are separate radio channels and can use as much as is possible.

Perhaps you're confused because carriers, GSM or CDMA, do allocate a certain amount of backhaul to guarantee that voice calls are clean. The rest is free for the taking.

For ME, it doesn't matter if AT&T is faster or not. Come to where I live and work and make 3 calls on your AT&T phone (if you can). Trust me, you'll have to redial at least one due to a drop. Where I am (not where you are, but where I am), AT&T is total crap. A Verizon iPhone will be a godsend.

Step inside the building where I work away from a window and watch your iPhone (or any AT&T device) drop to "no service." I get to watch it happen every day. Then notice all the people on Sprint and VZW who can text and talk all day anywhere inside the building without dropping a single call.

Fast data is useless if you can't get ANY data! Data and calls simultaneously isn't important if you can't make a call in the first place. And I have wifi at home and at work, so most of the time it won't matter.

For those of you for whom AT&T works well, more power to you. I wish it did for me. But for me - and as far as I care for me only - Verizon is by far and away the preferred carrier here.

So, on Feb 3, I'll be adding an iPhone to my Verizon account.

How do you know yours are right? Just because they're better?

So you are saying extremelab's latency test isn't even real? Better call them up and tell them that....meanwhile I'll let speedtest.net know why their app sucks.

AT&T 3G where I am at in Michigan is quite good (now that I just got 3G a couple of weeks ago).

I did a speed test from my iPhone and one from my MBP using a Sprint MiFi. AT&T blew Sprint out of the water; see attached images.

AT&T upload sucks though as well as the ping.

Hey, are you Jailbroken or something? Just wondering what that -85 is up in the upper lefthand corner of your screen. That's where the signal bars are normally.

I know this is off-topic but hooray for Canada; I get really fast speeds up here, and if the next iPhone supports HSPA+ I'll be getting 21 Mbps (well, not real world but still fast!).
