Yes, it's a limitation in CDMA that disallows the use of data while on a voice call. If you ever had dialup, you'd know how this works. If you haven't, I can understand. Basically, the call will go through, your data will pause (or stop, depending) and then you'll resume your data after the call is ended. From what I understand, you also still receive texts while in a call.

So, this means that when you're sharing your internet connection to your friends and your boss calls, they lose internet. Also, good luck on their "unlimited" internet.

Once again someone quoting what they don't know about. I have never been restricted in any way by going over what you call Verizons "unlimited" internet. Once for about 3 weeks I had no internet so I used PdaNet on my Droid X to connect my laptop. I was on there everyday with NO problems, no contact from Verizon telling me to stop, and no overages!!! Now when I had At&t that was a different story. I went over their 2gb plan often, and had to pay huge fees.

Also for those saying that the iPhone will suck on Verizon because Verizons cdma network is much slower than At&t's, well at least I can use Verizon's network without having to connect to wifi just to make a call. As a matter of fact I have wifi at home, but never use it on my phone because 3g speeds is fast enough for me.

I know this is off-topic but hooray for Canada; I get really fast speeds up here, and if the next iPhone supports HSPA+ I'll be getting 21 Mbps (well, not real world but still fast!).

Those are some seriously good speeds! I hit 5-5.5 on a regular basis. I've hit 6 a number of times. Highest is 6.12 mbps down in Boston

I wonder how many people calling somone with a verizon iPhone will be sent directly to voicemail cause someones surfing the net.

That issue was atrocious on the original 2G iPhone, I bet CDMA phone will have this issue too.

None. As explained earlier in the thread, voice calls and texts take priority over data sessions on CDMA devices.

Wi-Fi won't let you place calls. It needs cell tower connectivity.

In theory true. But does it actually work? I know with Edge it sends it to voicemail Almost 50% of the time.

Anyone with CDMA androids have any issue with calls being sent to voicemail?

I'm on Verizon and have been using a BlackBerry (several models throughout the years) and have rarely had a call go directly to voicemail when I'm surfing the web or using other types of data.

Thanks to youmail, I also get email notifications of not only new voice mails, but also missed calls that have been sent to voicemail. I would say the rate of calls being sent directly to voicemail is around 1%, and isn't attributed just to data usage, but also my basement (which is excellent at cutting off cellular signals from all carriers).

There is NO issue with voice calls going to voicemail while using data. Voice has priority over data, period.

I really wish people would stop perpetuating this falsehood about CDMA.

My section of Houston sucks...comparitively...just did two at 7:55-8:00AM

ping:529 DL: 1.28 UL: 0.01
ping:506 DL: 0.83 UL: 0.04

Greenway Plaza area. The thing is, I can see the AT&T switching building out my window three blocks away...I assume that they have cell antennas there too. :(

Yes your tests do suck, and yet they are pretty much in line with what VZW customers claim as the norm. They're happy because "at least it's consistent".

My service is very consistent though, that's the thing. More so than VZW was for me.

It will be very interesting to see how VZW's network is perceived in a year or two, once 3 or 4 million data hungry iPhone customers jump on board.

...in Salt Lake City.

And so, you know, good for you. You're definitely in one of the blessed cities, for whatever reason. It'd be nice if they added more cities to that list.

I'm in Dallas and I don't believe I've ever gotten speeds as slow as what you represent. While I do understand that tests are relative to many factors, at the slowest I've had just under 2mbps here. I'm about a mile from downtown.

Yes, I know Dallas is a major AT&T city (headquarters?) so I'm lucky that way. However, if I lived north in the country side...I'd be using Verizon for certain.

But usually their speeds are slower than the 3G AT&T has that I've seen.

And still, all testing is relative.

I'm 45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh right now and ATT speeds are as follows:

Download: .53 mb/s
Upload: 1.13 mb/s

Pretty painstakingly slow here....i'll check when I get back into downtown pittsburgh and let you know. Verizon has always been predominant here though...

EDIT:

Just retested, my phone must have just been in a bad area. I moved it a couple feet and got these results:

Download: 2.68 mb/s
Upload: 1.08 mb/s

That's pretty good. I cant STAND dropped calls, but I also can't stand slow internet...i guess I'm gonna have to weigh my options...

In Philly I got 2.67/1.38 on att 3G. Was talking to an att tech at work and he was asking me how do get to roof of a building cause they are putting 4g in.

My statement about the "unlimited Internet" was not to say that you would get charged for going over but that it may not last.

Thanks for assuming I don't know what I'm talking about.

Even worse here at Greenway in Houston on AT&T:

1:28 PM...ping 546ms DL: 0.08Mbps UL: 0.04Mbps

Take heed that Verizon throttles their 3G network in order to improve voice reliability. If you are a heavy data user you may regret a major downgrade in data speed. We are talking painfully slow if you are used to getting over 2 Mbps on AT&T. Verizon's 3G speeds really suck compared to AT&T.

It is not uncommon to be getting 5 Mbps down on AT&T and my experience with Verizon I was lucky to get 1 Mbps at off-peak hours.

Not to mention, the inability to use data and voice at the same time.

I'm still going to get an iPhone 4 the day it launches. I can wait a few extra seconds for something to download. I can't believe somebody would be that impatient. It's still an amazing phone on a solid network. I don't understand what this post is about except to bash Verizon's iPhone.

Even worse here at Greenway in Houston on AT&T:

1:28 PM...ping 546ms DL: 0.08Mbps UL: 0.04Mbps

In Philly where I work I get 2.50'ish/1.3'ish which is fast for me. However when I go home to South Jersey I notice the difference and get 1.3'ish/.50-.80'ish which is sufficient for me. But I do notice the difference between work and home.

Hey, are you Jailbroken or something? Just wondering what that -85 is up in the upper lefthand corner of your screen. That's where the signal bars are normally.

Nope, not JB, never have been. I'm on 4.2.1.

That's the Field Test Mode I enabled so I can get a more accurate reading of my signal.

Yep you don't.

I find it funny that the majority of people on here use at&t but act like they know what they are talking about when it comes to Verizon. I've had Verizon family plan for a long time, and myself personally has tried all carriers including At&t so I know what im talking about when it comes between the two.

Most on here are just quoting a "fact" that they read from another At&t fanboy on here instead if actually reasearching it. Once again get your facts straight before you start posting something that you have not experienced for yourself.

Agreed, I have a DroidX, switched from AT&T to Verizon and got rid of my iphone. I LOVED the iphone, and thought nothing could beat it. But the DroidX easily matches. I had at least 5 dropped calls per day on my drive on Interstate 85 to work in Charlotte (1.5 hour commute) before I switched to Verizon, NOW....I can talk the entire distance and not even have a blip.

I also use pdanet with my phone and travel from California to NY and back all the time. In rare instances, I do not have coverage or the speeds are really slow. But usually this is because I am out in the desert of Arizona or small town in Kansas.

AT&T always sucks. I could barely get a conversation going before I'm dropped. Can't believe I put up with them for 2 years, simply because I didn't want to get rid of the iphone! :(

Maybe I'm missing something? I don't have to be connected to wifi or 3G to make a call or receive a call.

AT&T's coverage is so bad, that many people, while AT HOME, have to use wifi and skype or not use their phone unless they are standing in the kitchen, facing west.... (My aunt has to do this) lol

Maybe I am in the minority, but I will stand a few dropped calls to have faster data. My usage time on data is probably 10x my usage on voice. I sacrificed voice quality when I decided to run an iPad (data-only) sim in my iPhone 4. VOIP can suck when you are on 3G. But I just don't care, because my phones primary function is not voice, and my cell phone bill is $35 a month. It is all about what your needs are and what is important to you.
