Personally, the regular iPhone 14 series and even the Plus are a very poor value, especially when you can pay a few hundred more for a Pro model with more features. What makes it even a poor value is that it uses the same A15 SOC, which is already 1 year old along with the same cameras. This possibly mean it will get one year less of updates. The 14 is just a 13, but slightly improved, which makes it very unattractive for those who already own a 13 or even a 12. With Apple killing the mini model, there is no compelling reason to get the regular model when the 14 Pro models is $200 more. The Pro models if you upgrade every three years feel like an upgrade. The regular models, not so much, or can even be a downgrade due to cheaper build quality (SS on the Pros vs Aluminum on the regular models)

That is why the 14 Pro models, if you tend to keep your phone 3 years or more is worth it. That is why I tend to gravitate to the Pro models since the additional features more worth it in the long run, even if you don’t need it now.

There is no need to update for 12/13 owners - they are not target demographic this year. People are getting here from 6-7-8-se or XS, X, 11, 12/12 Pros - 14 is better than those. For example camera is much better in 13/14 rather than any 12 or 12 Pro.

Apple didn't kill mini - it is still there and even sold by Apple.

From carrier buy outright deals with no bill credits - $500 Iphone 14 or $600 14 Plus do sound like a great deal.
Of course 14/14PM are also discounted by the same $300 at the same carriers, but if we are playing number games, then $300 reduction of $1100 is lesser % than 300 reduction from 800.

Then again, going from Iphone 14 for $500 to 14 PM for $800 is extra $300, which is $300/$500=60% more to pay which is considerably large amount.

In the market, aluminum used in regular iphone is much more expensive than stainless steel. In other words, aluminum is more rare and pricier material. Think of aluminum bike frames versus heavy ss cheap bikes.

Additional features would not matter in a year. Next year, Iphone 15 will get camera of 14 Pro max, then it will be mostly the same. For example, Iphone 13 was better than iphone 12 Pro, because you got 12 pro max cameras in your iphone 13, while 12 Pro had worse camera than older bigger brother.

no hate, but damn, imagine "not noticing" the biggest improvement in iPhone display technology since the retina display
It is all relative. I didn't want to jump from 144Hz win laptop to 60hz Mac, but I needed to because it is a Mac.
But at some point you just don't realize the downgrade, unless your memory is fresh or you are running 2 simultaneously.

Also Apple uses 120hz, which is far less noticeable than 144 hz. 300Hz feels like rocket and leaves 144hz in the dust in laptop screens.

Though, high refresh rate is also stolen with smaller size - it is less immersive. For example, there is no way back after Ipad Pro 11 or 12.9 to the regular ipads - 60hz feels so slow and laggy. But on the phone screen, those differences are not so evident.

I had iphone 13 while wife had 13 pro max - i could take great pictures that i also posted here on macrumors share your photo thread. There were practically no difference.
I don’t expect things to change with this iteration since 14 got their cameras from 13 pro max.
For hardcore i have old sony nex 7 with sel 50 1.8 and zoom 18-200 which greatly superior to any phone camera. By the way, nex 7 + 50 mm lens runs for $500 on ebay - great quality per dollar paid.

It’s all about the post processing …

The differences I notice in some of the shots in different reviews are in the level of detail even though it isn't significant. Some of the reviewers are still mostly preferring to shoot w/the 12 MP mode anyway since the capture is slower on the 48MP version (eg. Austin Mann and also 9to5 Mac).

Hi, after some hours with 14 plus (after returning 14PM and coming from 11PM) I’m just in the point I thought I was going to be. No promotion is assumable as barely noticeable in this screen size, I prefer notch over DI watching videos, don’t mind to not have AOD. The problem is that I miss telephoto and having further zoom…

I've been using a 14 PM since launch day. I'm coming from a 12 PM. It is noticeably heavier. Technically only 12 grams more but I notice the difference.

I'm going to wait until the 14 Plus comes out to decide if I want to keep it or not. I have never noticed ProMotion before and that doesn't change with the 14 PM for me. AOD is great. Dynamic Island is super cool but not super ergonomic due to the sheer size of the 14 PM. I'm not a stickler for cameras personally.

Just wanted to give prospective buyers a heads up.
Don’t buy the 14 plus. It’s a waste of money. Got to be the worse value phone at 900

Well you are entitled to your opinion... Thanks for telling me how to spend my money
You can spend what you want but it’s simply a bad money grab by apple. There no benefit to buying this over the 13 pro max which you can get for cheaper price. If you want to waste a huge amount of money over an overpriced device that’s your choice.

Thank you for allowing me to spend my hard earned money on what fits my needs. Much appreciated

this is perfect example of how Apple is able to get away with this.
Get away with what? I personally can not stand the dynamic island. Have no need for the pro motion. Always on display is a battery drain. So they put last years soc in a phone that is still faster than the vast majority on the market and its an issue? I personally have no need for the pro models. To each there own.

Are you one of those people who upgraded from the iPhone 5 to iPhone 5C?

yep, apple depends on users buying last years model by just putting a 14 on it. Apples made a money grab and made people fall for it and buy it by paying more for less features when there’s a cheaper option out there
This is pretty unfair because there hasn't been a phone this size outside of the pro line. I also don't get the comparison to the 13 pro max as Apple doesn't sell it anymore and a lot of people aren't going to want to buy it on the used market. Comparing this to the 14 PM, which is what it should be compared against, there are reasons to buy it. For myself it's the lower weight, the better viewing of widescreen content, and the fact that its cheaper.

Some people don't need the telephoto lens or the fast refresh rate. This is actually one of the lightest phones of its size, which matters to some people.

Very well stated
