I just retired an iPad 1 a few weeks ago when Target had their awesome but back. Sure, it was slower than my iPad 4, but still perfectly usable, especially to my kids. It surely didn't limit me when it first came out, even with such "small" amounts of RAM.
Sure, when it first came out. But how about towards the end - you know, the future proofing kind of thing. Do you think the iPad 1 would have still been useful to the rest of your family, had it had more RAM?

I also have a 2008 iMac with the ATI 2600 card, which also runs Macericks like a champ after doing the simple kext fix. Also have a it rocking a home made Fusion drive made by coupling an internal SSD with an external FW800 drive.

I like doing the impossible...
The impossible indeed. The "simple kext fit" is not so simple to all. My parents iMac is a couple states away, but I spent three days last year, following every post in that thread, detailing various kext fixes, and they all resulted in kernel panic upon reboot. If you have detailed instructions, or can point me at some, I'd be really appreciative. I can make a trip up there to try again on their iMac.
