I am no fan boy. There was no need to insult me. I said nothing untoward about you or your position on the phone.Because I have no vested interest and am not prepared to engage in a fan-boy debate. I have said what I feel and will leave it there.
That’s how I made my decision with the mini after owning the 12 pro max for a month and returning it. Having had plus and max phones, plus a 11 iPad Pro and 16 in MacBook Pro,Here is my 12 Mini next to an 8 Plus. Not really seeing that big of a difference as far as text size.

Here is Mini compared to 11 Pro. Again, not much of a difference.

I would never try to read a book on any phone. I guess if you're going to spend hour after hour staring at your phone, the small difference in text might make a difference. For how I use my phone, I really see no difference and my eyes aren't great. I wear glasses.
Before you go trying to diagnose yourself with possible PWM, you should take into consideration that your possible problem, if you have one, might be due to overuse and not PWM itself.I've just been reading into PWM in general guys including some posts from MacRumors forums. I think this might be something that affects me.
Personally lately I've been feeling strange, not quite any sort of banging headache but ever so slightly dizzy (but I must emphasise slightly, maybe even in want of a better word). Its hard to describe. But its been bothering me a hell of a lot and at night or if I concentrate I feel the slightest ever migraine sensation ... can this be the Note 20 Ultra?
I've been using this thing flat out, far too much since I got it. Don't forget my idea was to replace a computer AND phone so this has been stuck to my hand as a result. Now, I've been glued to my tech for more than half my life, some say too much screens might be the issue. But its suddenly gotten worse now as I've got this phone.
This leaves me a little bummed about the new iPhone's. Dont get me wrong, this Samsung screen is stunning. Pure eye candy. Cool always on night mode etc. But now I may only have the new SE to consider... thats fine for another 3 years. But I bet by the time the next SE lands, Apple will be able to have an OLED screen there too? I already see cheap Sony phones having OLED. DANG.
I totally agree with you in that sense. I do tend to avoid googling medical stuff so I don't panic too when I have an issue. Though by chance, I had an eye test done two and a half weeks ago and my eye health is thankfully all good. Apart from having dry eyes but nothing some prescribed drops can't help with. Before you go trying to diagnose yourself with possible PWM, you should take into consideration that your possible problem, if you have one, might be due to overuse and not PWM itself.
If you aren’t careful, you can spend way too much time on MR reading posts and then find yourself adapting into the problem you are reading about. That kind of thing happens all the time here.
I suggest you remove all night time phone use for the next 3 days. If you still have eye strain and slight headaches, you should consult an Optometrist who can properly diagnose you.
From what you described, it sounds like possible eye fatigue from overuse. If you cut down, you should notice a difference.I totally agree with you in that sense. I work from home now on a remarkably comfortable / ergonomic but boring laptop with a 'good quality' FHD screen. And I plug it into a decent but budget 24" monitor at home but I've had this for more than a year now so I don't blame them. IPS, LED screens, standard stuff.
I will try to cut down on usage, only issue being the sheer boredom of being stuck inside and not having much else to do with my time these days and the dark evenings :-(
Thanks, do you have any further ways to describe how it affected you? I only ask as I'm struggling to describe it myself.I have had all of the 2020 iPhone models so far. I’m definitely a pwm sufferer. I had watering eyes on the 12 Pro and regular 12, but thankfully no migraines or dizziness. I did return them.
I’ve got no issues on my 12 Pro Max. My mini display can make me feel like I got punched in the eyes. But I am keeping it and in fact am posting from it while waiting in the car for my husband.
It’s actually a fine display for reading on if you’re not sensitive to pwm. I forget what it’s called but when I set up the phone I had the option to choose an enlarged or zoomed mode and I did and it works fine for most of the uses I’ve had. The mini is not a iphone I’d want to spend an extended amount of time looking at. But it’s great for carrying on me, doing quick texts and web searches, and calls. I’ve got no problems with battery life for my use.
For everything thing else I use my 12 Pro Max in much the same way you use your Ultra.
I have an S20 and I like it a lot but understand why you want to come back to iOS.
Good luck with your choice.
Why not make use of Apples extended holiday return until 1.8.2020 ?I played with a mini at Best Buy today and fell in love. Its the perfect size, I like my XS but its a bit too big for one handed typing and I hate that one handed squished keyboard. I would need to see some battery life and camera samples before I jumped tho.
The SE 2020 is a solid phone. I bought it when it was released to replace my SE OG. I knew when I bought the SE 2020, that I would be upgrading when the mini was released. It was bigger than I wanted and I didn’t really like the form factor.Well guys I considered the Mini but I think today I might go buy an SE. At the end of the day, it's a solid phone. Some reviews claim it takes better pictures than the iPhone XR (better than what I've had before, though not as good as the N20 Ultra which I've only had a month). So it's not as bad as I thought. It'll last me 3 years I hope and by then I sincerely hope Apple either fixed the PWM OLEDs or makes an LCD screened flagship or new model that isn't budget for me to upgrade to.
If miniLED is the future, does it suffer from PWM issues the same way? Curious as I'd hate my next Mac to only have OLED and not LCD, and if it's going to have miniLED I hope it doesn't suffer from the same issue
The question now is.... Black, White or Red?The SE 2020 is a solid phone. I bought it when it was released to replace my SE OG. I knew when I bought the SE 2020, that I would be upgrading when the mini was released. It was bigger than I wanted and I didn’t really like the form factor.
When you get the SE, I hope it is to your liking.
I had the product red model and the color is striking. I liked it a lot.The question now is.... Black, White or Red?
Black - boring, but the sleekest and safest colour. Plus it all matches, sides, front, back.
White - the most beautiful, clean and bright design. 3 tones, black screen, silver bezel, white back
Red - the striking, stand out and vibrant one. But I wish it was the iPhone 8 red. Reminds me of my yellow XR.
Thing is, I'm kinda leaning towards them all in a way... black, can't go wrong, white the nice option, red the wild option.... I've never been good at this. My OG SE in 2017 was gold, decided by asking Siri to flip a coin at the Apple Store on the spot lol
Which is exactly what you did in your first post. All I did was post a picture showing there isn't that much of a difference. The OP was asking for recommendations and by you using phrases like "simply miniaturizing the IOS GUI" they might get the wrong impression of exactly what the display looks like. I give photographic evidence to help the OP and I'm pushing my choice? Then you, for some reason, get offended and start attacking other members. WTF?This is the problem. When users want to push their choice they can always make a good case, whether it's phones, computers, cars or anything else. It's the reality that's important though.
You must not have ever owned an iPhone before the 6 Plus because the screens were all smaller, with a "miniaturized IOS GUI" back then.I in my early 60s, I wear contacts and my corrected vision is great for reading, but I found the mini to be uncomfortable. The 12 much less so.
I had the white SE. Really liked it. Now I have the black 12 Mini. Go figure. The question now is.... Black, White or Red?

It manifests different ways with different displays. Also, in my case even Apple LCD displays on the iPhones after iPhone 8 also cause me problems. I couldn’t figure out why until another forum member explained the newer displays have temporal dithering. Lol please don’t ask me to explain what that is but I recall it does result in its own kind of flicker. Thanks, do you have any further ways to describe how it affected you? I only ask as I'm struggling to describe it myself.
Over the years there have been times when I was just occasionally maybe unwell, say a flu or illness - not often thankfully, but during these times I felt how being rundown affected my ability to look at and focus on screens. I also know how maybe staying up all night, being tired and a sort of eye strain feels when I truly do over do the screen time... but this doesn't feel like those times.
Keen to hear further explanations / theories/ experiences.
So far I'm now leaning towards an SE
Yeah your right i have to admit. I got the white one to get the retro classic iPhone 4 look. The black one though is just seamless, like a single block of aluminium, and also appears slimmer and sleeker.I think the black iPhone 12 Mini is the best looking mobile phone ever made.
I am terrified at what you said it did to you medically?! Did / do you have a history of seizures etc already or was this something brought on by the PWM ? oh my god though :OIt manifests different ways with different displays. With my iPhone X, I just could focus on text. It was like it was twitching. I got eye fatigue fast.
I returned that and got an Xr. Tolerable but not as comfortable as my iPhone 8 Plus.
Then I tried the XsMax. I didn’t get eye discomfort but I got a seizure migraine. It was like having a stroke and messed my speech. It definitely wasn’t a stroke, I’ve had every kind of imaging diagnostic that exists.
With my 11 Pro there’s been no discomfort. Sometimes there’s a tiny bit of vertigo. And then I already described what happened with the 2020 models I’ve tried.
I feel like I’m punched in the eyeballs using my iPhone Mini. It’s gorgeous and cute and I enjoy looking at the back of it! It’s the green one. I love that color. I can still use it for the purpose I intended so I’m pleased enough. But if not for pwm, it would be an absolute favorite of mine.
I had the history of migraine seizures with very narrow specific known, easy to avoid triggers. Pwm sensitivity was a new addition at that point. Usually, just looking at lasers like the ones used in light shows and concerts can mess me up badly and that was my only known severe adverse reaction to pulsating/flickering light until I got my Xs Max.I am terrified at what you said it did to you medically?! Did / do you have a history of seizures etc already or was this something brought on by the PWM ? oh my god though :O
