Personally, I'd look to either t-mobile or verizon for android based phones.

AT&T has a horrible track record of locking down the android phones in wacky and frustrating ways. For instance, its generally quite easy to install apps. QR codes, android market place, websites, even manually if you wish. With AT&T you can only install only programs found on the android marketplace which is a subset of what's actually out there.

Also in their first android phones, they replaced google with yahoo. Now I'm no google fanboy but why in the world would use replace the google search engine on a google OS for yahoo?

The samsung captivate and droid x are probably the best phones out there spec wise, with the nod to the captivate edging out the droid x a bit. The down side is that its on the AT&T network.

Thank you, was looking at the captivate but damn no third party apps, think it can be hacked to allow 3rd party apps?

You guys are kinda blowing it way out get a goddamned case and be done with it.

What if I want a phone, that just works.. The apple commercials say everything is so simple.. I just want something reliable... Being bound into a 2 year contract isnt fun with a ****** phone.

Has it been confirmed no 3rd party apps yet? or are people just speculating based on AT&T's history with android devices?

It will allow third party apps. You just have to get them through the Android Marketplace. While I don't know this for sure, but I think there will eventually be a way around this.

IS that usually how most apps are offered?

Another round of android phones may be coming out this Christmas with dual core chips. At the very least they will have new hardware of some sort. You could just reactivate your old phone and wait a little while.

I bought a Nexus One from Google... of course the first thing I did with it is put it in a case.
After shattering the screen on my iPhone 2G two years ago when it slipped out of my pocket
in a parking lot, not putting a phone in a good case just seems crazy to me. I'll be curious
to see how many people suddenly decide that putting a nice case on an iPhone4 isn't such a
big deal once they've experienced Android :D

I'll be picking up a White iPhone4 once they become available.

I like the way my iPhone 4 looks in a case. I dont understand why this is a big deal. Its like a $20 investment that will keep the phone safe, allow you to sell it for more, and fix the reception issue. I didnt even like how if felt without a case because the non-rounded edges are much less comfortable and I always felt like the glass was going to slip through my fingers.

I would try a case on it to see if you dont mind it. Btw, I never used a case in 2 years with the iphone 3g because it seemed bulky but with the new phone its still pretty small even with case.

On AT&T right now the only other phone I would consider is the palm pre plus, but the hardware isn't as nice as the iPhone. The captivate and aria seem to have good hardware, but then you'd be using android, not sure if that's what you want to use comin from the iPhone. I'm kinda in the same boat, I want to return my now, but there just isn't anything else out there on AT&T that would I would consider better.

I don't know, as I have never owned an Android phone. maflynn would be able to answer this.

I get most of my Apps by the marketplace but I have installed apps from websites as well, so there are cases where some applications (for what ever reason) is not in the market place.

I am swapping my 4 for a Captivate on Sunday morning. I have been with the iPhone since day one, so I am kinda excited to change it up a bit.

If you do want a Captivate, go look it over well first and make sure the screen is acceptable for you. I have an EVO now and was pretty concerned it was going to be outclassed by the Epic 4g. I went in and compared it to the T-mobile Vibrant (same hardware) and while the screen was visually gorgeous, text on web pages when zoomed out was harder to read. Meanwhile the same thing on my Evo was very sharp and readable. It's a small peeve that I don't think most will care about, but it was enough that I am satisfied with my choice. I don't think Super-AMOLED is quite ready to replace LCD, but the colors do look amazing.

nothin as good imo, when to comes to surfing the net and app store or and fun.

only down is the phone side which if the call drops you just ring back :/ and if you return a this fantastic device because to can not be @ssed ringing people back then i think you need to look at yourself and not the phone.

bite your nose off to spite your face comes to mind with it if you ask me.

to goods far far out weigh the bad!

going to say this again because it is TRUE!

Do you guys realize if you swap to another smartphone on ATT you will lose your unlimited plan and have to choose 200 or 2gb. At least that's what the rep told me.

EVO if you have 4G in your city/state.

X if above doesn't apply.

3GS if you want to stay with apple.
