While CES runs from the 7th-10th, press-only events should start Monday (4th). At least thats how it was when I had a press badge a few years ago at CES - we went to press events all weekend long and the show started on a Monday (this year and next year, new years gets in the way so they push it back to Thursday). I could go this year as a "regular" attendee (show floor only), but it seems so lame after you've been to all the press events and you can talk to the reps one on one without a whole lot of hassle.

Mbp

I got a new MBP a couple of weeks ago. Since I was upgrading an 8 year old PowerBook, I think I will happy with this purchase even if they come out with new ones.:)

There was talk about a replacement for the Nikon D90 coming soon perhaps presented at CES but so far no whispers has come of that yet.

Hopefully both a D90 and a D700 replacement with both of them offering 1028p HD video. I have my suspicions though that Nikon is taking a cue from Apple and now only announcing the big ticket items at their own media events. The CES show will probably only see a few CoolPix announcements (maybe more cameras with projectors ).

I wonder if Microsoft will try a preemptive strike for press attention (v. Apple tablet rumors) with a demo of another make-believe tablet device that they may be thinking about creating at some future date yet to be determined. Maybe.

"Hey look everyone, we're making a new tablet too! Anyone? Anyone???" - Steve Ballmer

I hope it's chewy, like cake.

I don't think so, but Google could be planning to upstage both CES and Apple with a Google Tablet announcement on the 5th of January (tomorrow). A sub-$500 Tablet from Google would really upset the proverbial Apple cart.

Considering the fact that 1028p video doesn't exist, I doubt they'd offer it. I take it that blog you are quoting meant 1080p. Anyhow, Nikon and Canon dropped the ball on the whole thing. Most people who were tired of waiting for Red Scarlet purchased GH1 by now.

It in unlikely that Apple will announce new products at or around the time of the CES show.

Many 3rd party developers of Apple related hardware and software will probably announce products at the CES show. I believe they are having an iPhone/Mac related area of the CES show for exhibitors.

Apple will use the rumored end of the month special press event to announce their plans and upcoming new products.

Being that the rumors about the January 26th event are focused on the tablet and mobility, Apple is likely to silently update the MacBook Pro on some Tuesday between then and now.

Then again Apple might see the transition to Arrendale as a big enough deal to sit on and mention as part of their press event. I'm personally hoping the refresh the macbook pro line ahead of their event as I don't want to wait that much longer to buy a new machine :)

Hehe Silently....
As in web site front page big splash, press release the tuesday after CES when the tech writers are having a much slower news week send the invites for the 26th at same time.

Sounds like a great way to Silently make a lot of Noise.

Whether Apple announces a tablet or not, tablets are coming...

At CES, a company called Freestyle already has a tablet and is talking to major manufacturers to market it through the same channels that netbooks are sold through.

Competition is a good thing.

I figure if the next iPhone does not come out until Summer 2010, then the better the Nexus One is, the better the next iPhone will be. Heck, we should all be wishing that the Nexus One is just as good as the current 3GS iPhone - it will push Apple to make the Summer 2010 iPhone significantly better than the 3GS.

while in principle you are correct, i don't think the reality is as we would wish it be. the nexus one is unlikely to be a big hit as an unlocked phone due to cost. additionally google does not have the marketing machine to push it to match iphone success, which is what would be required to scare apple into doing something worthwhile like providing flash and wide aperture lens.

finally, developments cycles are such that even if apple did want to react, it would not be until 2011.

How about Core i7 930 being released? According to many sources, it's due in Q1 2010. Intel hasn't been specific whether it'll be 45nm or 32nm as it's 6 core counter part, which by my predictions should make it into the Mac Pro.

Also, SATA 6 Gb/s please appear on more boards!

The Intel Mac Pro needs SATA III, FW3200 & USB3. Seagate already has a 2 TB SATA III drive out. Even though Apple started FireWire they have been doing little to keep it around so we'll probably never see anything past FW800. The same Windows PC Motherboards that have SATA III on them also has USB3 on them. But Apple that has been given so much credit by some as being a leader in new technology really seems to trail in many if not most areas.

Both the single & dual processor Intel Mac Pros need to have a model that has a 3+ GHz speed. Remember that was one of the reasons that we were told that we left the PPC platform. To this day there are not many Mac models that exceed 3 GHz.

MacWorld

I love these types of trade-shows. The inspiration one can get from these is amazing, also not to mention the networking :) .... BUT AND IT'S A HUGE BUT  .... Last years CES brought to notable following:

  • OLED Tv's (The 2nd Best announcement by far)
  • The palm pre (2009's joke cell phone)
  • Pico Projectors (is an emerging technology that applies the use of a projector in a handheld device. Like the Nikon Coolpix S1000, which is very cool but is it really CES news worthy? If Nikon was more Apple like they could have launched it much better IMO)
  • Marvell (is an American producer of storage, communications and consumer semiconductor products.)
  • SheevaPlug ( This is just a PLUG COMPUTER...One of the first on the market BTW)
  • Dell Adamo
  • Minoru 3D Webcam (Very Cool webcam, which looks like WALL-E or Johnny 5 and takes a distant 3rd in best announcement)

The Biggest announcement at CES wasn't even at CES and that was Apple bowing out of MacWorld. Which should change its name. For decades when you heard MacWorld you instantly thought Apple. Now since the name of the show left, they should really think about starting new and changing the name of the convention.

I like the ideas of these shows as mentioned above but Apple gave a clear indication as to where these trade-shows are heading.

Apple will steal ALL the Thunder from both CES and Macworld (even-though MacWorld is slated in Feb)

On a side note if Apple focuses on the mobility space (As mentioned by Arns article). I think we should expect the following IF THERE IS AN ACTUAL EVENT (read below about apples product cycle):

  • Mobile Me/ iWork.com (beta)
  • Time Capsule
  • Some talk about iPhone and company numbers
  • The rumored "Tablet"

Also Apple addressed their Annual Product cycles.

  • The Holiday Season. Novemberish
  • The educational buying season. Late summer
  • iPods. October
  • iLife Development cycle. Usually March
  • iPhone. June
  • Apple updates the desktops and notebooks whenever there ready.

Phil Schiller even said "JANUARY" doesn't fit with any product cycle announcements.

MacWorld Expo is about Macs. That doesn't require Apple to be there.

aah can't wait

I'm pretty pumped about CES. Partially because I'm actually going to be in attendance for the first time myself... partially because its something to be pumped about in general.

hmm.. maybe I'll run into arn or someone.

I'm almost in the same boat as you. My 5 year old 17" PPC Powerbook is limping along; especially since I spilled large sprite on the thing a couple of weeks back... luckily the thing's fine except for the sticky keyboard.

I've been so out of the Mac laptop loop but I'm trying to hold out for as long as possible, quad-core MBP would be nice and one without integrated graphics. :) Looks like Apple's pushing back on Intel but we'll see... but either way, progress isn't a bad thing.

On a CES note, despite my wish list, is it me or is it rather BIG news that Apple is DELAYING Macworld??? I have a feeling Apple is may have something rather big up its sleeve to postpone MacWorld... maybe this is their way saying to the broader market... "Oh, We have: One More Thing."

Brings back memories of the great, preemptive 'Surface' demo (big ass table, with more moving parts in it than an automated car wash) one month before the iPhone release.

Their CES tablet demo will consist of a prototype which is not yet capable of performing tasks shown on the concept video, (a la NATAL) but can displays e-books, is capable of squirting three pages to a friend, can play music through a headset, can access Wi-Fi, has some multi-touch features such as tap-to-zoom, swipe to flip pages, has an FM radio built in, and comes in brown or purple. (Yes, the casing will be chewy)

google does not have the marketing machine to push it to match iphone success, which is what would be required

Google has the largest marketing machine in the world if they really wanted to use it. The Internet. Google proliferates all throughout the internet, displaying billions of ads every day for customers. If Google put a simple "Learn about Google Nexus One Mobile, click here" ad on it's homepage and on all of it's search results pages, and news pages, then BILLIONS of eyes would view it EVERY day. Google ads also don't just appear on Google webpages - Google sells ads for third-party websites also. Whether you realize it or not, if Google really wanted to harness it, they have the largest marketing machine in the world; The Internet.

Apple's has something that Google does not have with the Nexus One: Apple's products can sell themselves. When a customer walks into an Apple store and demos an iPhone for the first time, the product sells itself. You can employ the world's best marketing team to design commercials and magazine ads for you, but if the customer walks into your showroom and your product is terrible, the customer is not going to buy it.
