Also Apple addressed their Annual Product cycles.

  • The Holiday Season. Novemberish
  • The educational buying season. Late summer
  • iPods. October
  • iLife Development cycle. Usually March
  • iPhone. June
  • Apple updates the desktops and notebooks whenever there ready.

Phil Schiller even said "JANUARY" doesn't fit with any product cycle announcements.

Ahhh. But the Tablet is a whole new product segment. It needs a spot to fit in somewhere. :) :apple:

no biggie. But the article says Apple pulled out this year. Dont you mean they annouced last year they pulled out for this year?

Thanks.

The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicks off this week and analysts are expecting the predominant themes to be connectivity and mobility. Mobile devices such as new Android devices and tablet computers are expected to be a big focus. Meanwhile, outside of CES, Google and Apple are both expected to make announcements regarding their future plans this month.

The launch of the Google Nexus One phone is planned for January 5th, while Apple is rumored to be announcing their tablet device on/around January 26th.

For our part, MacRumors will be attending CES for the first time this year. In the past our focus has been Macworld Expo which has tended to run concurrently with CES. This year, however, Apple withdrew from Macworld which resulted in it being rescheduled into February. We'll be focusing on any relevant Apple-related announcements including new Intel chips, ARM-related technology, notable 3rd party Tablets and more. CES 2010 runs from January 7th - 10th.

Why any CES tablet announcement won't mean much

Whether Apple announces a tablet or not, tablets are coming...

At CES, a company called Freestyle already has a tablet and is talking to major manufacturers to market it through the same channels that netbooks are sold through.

So?

The difference between Apple's (maybe) forthcoming tablet and every other tablet device coming to market is CONTENT. Apple is the content king, with a hardware / software ecosystem other manufacturers are dying to duplicate. It was the same for the iPod, then for the iPhone, arguably for the AppleTV (though not as "successful as the iPod & iPhone, it's still the best selling device of it's kind), and it will be the same for the rumored tablet. 3rd party developers will flock to the Apple tablet just as they did to the iPhone, because that's where the money is.

As cool as Android may be for some people (after playing with several Android-based devices recently, I fail to see what the big deal is personally, since it really doesn't do anything better than the iPhone OS), I don't see it knocking Apple off of it's perch anytime soon. Nor does it have to.

In fact, the day Apple announces the "iSlate" will be the day they announce the replacement for iTunes with an all-new program that supports everything from the iPod shuffle to the "iSlate" through a singular program. This new program will roll out on the same day the "iSlate" officially reaches Apple Store locations.

Oooh, How I love (mac)rumours... I wish you great stay at the CES!!

As of tablet: i really wonder what it is gonna be. I believe that an Apple product must make sense to majority of existing mac users. I use all my iPod, iPhone and MBP every single day.. and I bet they will fill in some kind of need that most of us will find a use for the slate... I could see it as a home-based portable device that would become centre of other devices around the house /with the ability to go on the road easily as well/ Apple is the only company that can pull it off...:apple::apple::apple:

MacWorld Expo is about Macs. That doesn't require Apple to be there.

The main reason why MacWorld was that big of a deal, was due to Apples presence and keynotes, also with new product introductions. Since Apple has left, its not that big of a deal.

If Apple does not have the "rumored" January 26th event, what will be at MacWorld that isn't at an Apple Store?

If Apple releases no new products until after MacWorld, what would be the BIG draw to seeing or going to MacWorld that an Apple Store doesn't already have, what's macworlds purpose? to talk about and see Macs that we already see on the website or at Apple stores?

Do you see my point?

Apple left and for good reason. Which was they were tired of having to do something WOW for a convention they've grow better then.

MacWorld should be called something else.

True and if confirmed, the January 26th event would be a good slot for annual "TABLET" updates.

The big deal with Android for me is the ability to easily multitask between apps. Last night i was streaming music on my Archos 5 via last.fm whilst using the twidroid twitter app and browsing the forums.

That's not to say any Apple tablet would not be able to multitask but the current devices using iPhone os do have a hugely restrictive limitation only being able to run one 3rd party app at a time.

Perhaps there would be a better time than one month after the end of the holiday buying season to introduce new consumer toys.

Note that at CES many "concepts" and protos are announced - often there's a disclaimer "available in summer" or "fall". Even though Intel has announced some CPUs there, at times the volume shipments are several weeks or months away.

In many ways, CES is a preview of what will be out for the next holiday season.

They have to update the pro this month. They updated the macbook about two months ago and for the pro to sit this long without an update is unusual. For it to go without one until WWDC would be extra strange.

Whoa, I guess I'd forgotten that Macworld isn't Macworld.

And here I was expecting Macbook Pro announcements this week. Throw Blu Ray in them finally and upgrade to a faster Nvidia GPU and I might bite.

Well put, I never looked at it that way.

I think a Apple version "Tablet" should fall under the the iPod events (September/October). If it's suppose to play games, movies, music, and show us elegant e-books/magazines/newspapers. That sounds more like the proper stage to announce such a device.

Though maybe they'll announce it sooner (like they did with the iPhone in 2007) so the FCC doesn't announce it for them. :)

I try to stick to buying hardware in May and then later on in October. May since you get the prodcuts from CES and October for Computex.

I've really taken a liking to Lenovo's Thinkpad Edge and it's AMD based.

I'm almost in the same boat as you. My 5 year old 17" PPC Powerbook is limping along; especially since I spilled large sprite on the thing a couple of weeks back... luckily the thing's fine except for the sticky keyboard.

I've been so out of the Mac laptop loop but I'm trying to hold out for as long as possible, quad-core MBP would be nice and one without integrated graphics. :) Looks like Apple's pushing back on Intel but we'll see... but either way, progress isn't a bad thing.

On a CES note, despite my wish list, is it me or is it rather BIG news that Apple is DELAYING Macworld??? I have a feeling Apple is may have something rather big up its sleeve to postpone MacWorld... maybe this is their way saying to the broader market... "Oh, We have: One More Thing."

Apple didn't delay MacWorld. MacWorld is an independent Tradeshow that Apple took part in for a number of years. They decided it wasn't worth the time/money/effort, so they backed out after last year. Macworld was then moved to February so as to not clash with CES, which was always a problem.

I just got a MBP for Christmas to replace my aging 4.5 year old PPC Powerbook. 3.06 Ghz, 500GB HDD, 8GB RAM. The thing is so damn fast it's amazing to me. I won't regret it if they announce an update in the next few weeks.

Yikes, I sure would, especially given both in terms of Intel's schedule, and Apple's, we would normally expect an update this month.

Anyway, it feels really weird Apple pulled out-I'm still used to there being TWO Macworlds per year, and now there are basically none :(

Must be a nervous few weeks for some of these manufacturers releasing tablets and not knowing what Apple have planned. I suppose they will hope to grab some users ASAP!

A flat touch screen tablet is useless if it's just running windows or a basic version of linux that isn't really designed for it. The only reason why the apple tablet COULD be successful would be based on some new software designed strictly for it, with a new interface that no one else has thought of yet (similar to how apple brought about multitouch).

I'm more interested in productivity and work from this tablet. I have to read through tons of PDF documents (scientific publications) and I find reading them on my mbp is a pain in the ass and so I just print them all. If this tablet was easy on the eyes and good for reading pdf files (doubt it with the small screen size) and allowed me to highlight and organize/flip between PDF files easily, then it would be fantastic.

I'm only intersted in it if it's running real OS X (hopefully on x86, meaning Atom presumably). It's fine if it has a "tablet" interface that can be toggled back and fourth between the regular interface, but I (probably) don't have any use for another Mobile OS X device. The iPod doesn't cut it for even basic PDA functions for what I need it for, let alone something more advanced.

The leading consumer electronics manufacturing industries are providing several entertainment and communication gadgets for the consumers. With the growing consumerism they are coming with ample items for the high potential market.
