As a iPhone user since the very beginning, in my opinion, the poor stability of iOS and virtually useless Siri voice recognition sets the bar to beat the iPhone pretty low these days.....
Uhhh wut?
[doublepost=1497448210][/doublepost]
Well, for starters, Safari crashes and screen freezes...
Idk what iOS you're running or if you have a random issue, but I never have problems with Safari

Poor stability of iOS? Can you explain further?
Like how sometimes I would wake up and my Apple music app would have been completely reset and my playlists gone.

Or when I try to listen to a voicemail and the play button is greyed out

Or when I speak to Siri and it literally gets everything I say right but the answer to simple queries so wrong

I can go on and on about the bugs I have with my 7 plus on iOS 10. Don't get me wrong. I love Apple devices but the last few years, they've been full of bugs that take months to get fixed (and maybe don't get fixed). If Apple makes stable software like they used to without annoying bugs like they did in iOS 5-6 era, then I'll switch back in a heartbeat. As of now they release software and then release patches weeks to months later...in the meantime, the user suffers

Old Android devices were much much worse with bugs. Even the s7 was. But not the s8. For now Ive moved on to the s8 which is very stable so far in the 2 months I've had it.

The front of the S8 is beautiful and I love it, but the back of the it looks so awful especially in person. Also, the placement of the fingerprint scanner is unforgivable. I don't even mind the fingerprint scanner being on the back (Google did it perfectly with Pixel), but placing it right beside the camera is just dumb.

No taste? Put a Galaxy S8 or S8+ next to an iPhone 7 (especially a 7 Plus) and you tell me which one has a more "tasteful" design. Sorry but the iPhone 7 looks outdated and not very stylish next to the S8.

Why are you sorry?

Taste is subjective anyways, it isn't as if there is a method to measure design attractiveness. What one person likes another will hate, blah blah blah.

Cool that people love the S8, it's great to have options.

iOS is generally very stable for every device I've ever owned. I'm not sure why you've experienced these issues, but I'm sorry that's been your experience.

You're complaining about Apple's bug fixes and software update releases?? The user suffers due to their lack of updates? They push out updates so much more frequently and routinely than Android it's not even funny. What are you talking about?

The fingerprint scanner location on the S8 is an absolute joke. I also don't think the curved edges add anything to the device.

The iPhone X will start at $869. $100 more than the iPhone 7S Plus.

They do release updates much more frequently than Android devices. But I remember the voicemail issue in particular that I mentioned and also an issue where the phone app would freeze anytime I clicked the voicemail tab was present on iOS 10 release day. The fix for that didn't come out until January despite multiple smaller iOS updates before then that didn't even address the issue. I personally got so frustrated with the voicemail freezing that I switched to youmail for those few months.

Android doesn't keep you on the latest software due to lack of updates but from my experience, the software that does come out generally has way less bugs in my experience

Its pretty bad when Samsung starts leading Apple in design, even if functionality lags behind. We have to ask what has Ive been doing lately? Answer, making stuff thinner. Maybe its time for a new designer at Apple.

Am I the only one that thinks no bezels and rounded screen corners are terrible ideas from any practical standpoint. Sure, they look kinda cool, but that's it. Functionally they are chock full of compromises.

http://www.computerworld.com/article/3158476/smartphones/smartphone-bezels.html

I seriously, truly hope Apple doesn't fall victim to the mob-trend mentality on those features in particular.
Tee hee. You're evidence. It's not actually evidence. That article was written in January and made assumptions that turned out to be, and I'm being generous here, less than accurate. The anecdotal compromises the author used were pretty weak. The thing is, people know how to hold smartphones... even one's with think bezels. For those who find holding slim bezel phones difficult, manufacturers were kind enough to incorporate finger rejection algorithms into the software. Less bezel, more screen is just going to be SOP going forward.

I have no comment on this one. I have lost my trust on Consumer Report. I missed the good ol' Consumer Report back in the 90's...
Indeed. I wonder which of their testing rigs they use to objectively measure which phone looks cooler, and how they factor this in to the phone's utility to the consumer. They used to write detailed prose describing their findings and all the interesting things they noted during testing. Now many of their reports are more like, "here's a spreadsheet we made of features we read off each product's web page" with far less in the way of explanation. I tend to rely on TheWireCutter/TheSweetHome more these days.

Galaxy s8 is a fabulous device, Apple better have a good answer to this September.

There is no reason to expect that they won't. It won't matter.
iPhone is still the perceived best phone. Few people read Consumer Reports to choose which smartphone they will buy.
I assume that CR even loved the rear fingerprint ID, widely panned by everyone else.

Consumer Reports = Irrelevant

Form should be secondary to function. iOS still has a slight lead in that regard.

Glad this was published. On a related note, in my upcoming review, I pit the Galaxy S8 against Bell's Western Electric 500 telephone, Samsung's offering steals the show!

S8 vs Western Electric 500.jpg

In my review, I note the lack of browser choice offered by Bell's device and touch on some of the difficulties involved in cramming it into a pocket. I also found the rotary dial cumbersome and preferred the capacitive input of the S8, which allows the buttons to change with context.

Seems pointless to judge one companies newest gen product with another's essentially last gen product. If CR was truely "honest" they would have held the story until the end of the year when then could compare the S8 with iPhone 8. Of course when the iPhone 8 comes out it will likely beat S8. Then S9 will beat iPhone 8. Rinse, wash, repeat. How does this help buyers? Seems like it's only point is to sell magazines and website subscriptions.
