IPX7 is for immersion upto 1m.

Where does Apple claim this? I thought they only supported brief spray from shower/hand washing?

X7 should be enough for say a tri swimmer doing laps.

incorrect. IPX7 is for submersion in up to 1m for 30 minutes, but that does not include the pressure of strokes.

Skin tone doesn't impact it though.

Melanin, a naturally occurring pigment which causes skin color, and ink are completely different things.

That said, I wonder if it's possible to resolve the tattoo issue with a software update in the future. I also wonder why Apple didn't do any testing on inked individuals. Maybe they did and didn't get the same results...

I would also imagine that it doesn't include the water pressure from a shower head either. IPX7 is for occasional splashing, not necessarily running under water. So, it could fail eventually even while washing hands.

Correct. There is an enormous difference between natural skin colouring and ink.

There are also huge differences in inks themselves. So it's possible that some inks affect it and some don't. As with any new tech, I would always recommend that you head to a store and try before you buy.

Maybe they did, got the same results, and decided that meeting their self-imposed "early 2015" deadline was more important than going back to the drawing boards, considering the relatively small portion of likely customers who have tattoos on their wrists.

I've had my 42 mm Steel Watch with black sport band just over a week. This device is just incredible. I'm the only person where I live that has one so far so everyone is curious to see it in person and all are amazed by the build quality and features. Many say they were unsure from what they saw online, but seeing it in person convinced them to order one.

It's silly to me that actually rating details are behind a paywall. Anyone have screenshots they care to share? Also wondering about the Samsung because my Andriod friends claim that is just as good as AW and I've played with it and have an AW and all I'll say is...it's not. Anyway, screenshots, anyone?

The number of people who have enough ink on the top of the wrist to interfere with the sensor is very low, all things considered. About 21% of U.S. adults have at least 1 tattoo, according to the best recent surveys (there is one survey [data not available for review] that said it was 40% but 3 other recent surveys all had the number at about 20% so the 40% number is most likely to be way off).

The fact of the matter is that the number of people who have wrist tattooing that would interfere with the Apple Watch and who would actually buy one probably numbers in the 100s (out of millions that will be sold). We're talking about no more than hundredths of a percent of potential Apple Watch customers.

It's not an issue. Yes, maybe Apple will do something about it just because but they're not concerned about it. Maybe the Apple Watch and other wearables will help convince people to stop getting tattoos like that.

:apple:WATCH is the best smart watch. Also, rain falls from the sky and bears crap in the woods.

Consumer Reports does not accept advertising and they purchase every item they test. That's why they have to rely on subscriptions and donations (and why I trust them to be more objective).

the watch can't detect walking on a treadmill if the arms are held in position. They have a long way to go to surpass jawbone or Fitbit. Great otherwise, I especially love how it saves language preferences so you can use dictation in other languages with your contacts depending on who speaks what. The little things.

4 would be occasional splashing. 5 - 6k are water jets at various pressures. 7, encompasses all the previous protections surely?

I imagine Apple knew and decided it wasn't important. Most people don't have tattoos on their wrists. Most people who do have tattoos on their wrists limit the tattoo to being on the back of their wrist - not the front where it would have an impact on the heartrate sensor. I made an estimate in another thread that I stand by: this impacts fewer than 0.01% of people connected to the Internet (not a number pulled from the air. I looked through a few tattoo statistics to arrive at that estimate.)

Don't sll the screens have same hd screen. Why does review mention the ss and not sport. Or is that just cause that's the one they reviewed.

Durable scratch resistance with the stainless steel model?!

Durable scratch resistance with the stainless steel model?! Are you serious?! After a week I found so many hairline scratches on the casing of the watch!
