Contacts Disappeared From My iPhone

I have no idea how this happened, but all of my iPhone contacts disappeared overnight.

Two questions:

1. How do I restore them to my iPhone (version 9.3.4 (1.3.4 (13G35)?

and

2. How could this have happened?

Maybe logged off iCloud?
Try to login again or go to Settings, iCloud and check if Contacts switch is disabled.

No. I checked that. I'm stiil logged into iCloud.

But while I was there, I logged off iPhone and back in, and they're back.

I'm confused.

This used to happen with my iPhone 4S. Usually when I was too a lot on it like music, gps, using Siri to send a text, phone call, etc. It would lock up and when I reset it the contacts would be gone.

Logging out and back into iCloud would fix it.
