It is very clear result

1. The FABrication itself not a problem
2. Both company have the same GPU part
3. CPU part is huge different between Samsung and TMSC
4. maybe Media process part also different

Even same processor but there are two different CPU design;

The Power Consumption Differents are affected by the CPU part in AP not ehole part of AP.

so, problem in

1. Java or HTML 5 graphic intensive website
2. CPU instensive game such as strategy or AI games or Defense
3. CPU instensive video player such as Non MP4 video
4. 4K video process and recoding

I don't get why people think this isn't an issue. One chip gets substantially worse battery life when performing heavy workloads. Ars did little other than show the initial testing was accurate and there is a good version and a bad version when dealing with high CPU loads.

It may not be an everyday occurance, however I certainly don't want the phone with crap battery life when I am stuck keeping myself busy in an airport or on a trip playing games.

If given the choice between the two devices, would anyone say "Oh it doesn't matter, I'll be fine with inferior device for the next two years". Hell no, everyone would take the one that had slightly better battery life most of the time and substantially better battery life with certain tasks. Apple and developers are only going to make more complex games and apps over the product's lifespan, starting off with the worse of the two chips doesn't seem like a great idea.

Its not if your getting less battery. The samsung version performs with Apple's specs. The other chip just gets you a bonus. There isn't a chance of getting a bad version, only a chance of getting an extra good version. But I still understand people wanting the slightly better option.

You guys always think it's normal, within 1-3% variance. On Geekbench itself, the delta as high as 51% on another member's test 344min vs 227min.

How many time Steve Jobs said in their commercial while he was CEO: "Think Different"
Now apple fan choose to forget that huge difference?
Tim Cook wants you think "normal".

You actually believe this??? Amazing. Since there is NO way of knowing which chip you'll get with a new phone, clearly any "heavy cpu" user should NOT purchase an iPhone.

Yeah, they obviously should perform a phone from another company that will 100% perform worse doing the exact same task and the same speed.... Yes, we are left with this absurd conclusion.

Not to give credence one way or another but the title of this 'Article' is complete hype. "Controlled Testing" says Macrumors. Nowhere in the Asrtechnica article do they themselves even call their test 'Controlled' In fact they say pretty much the exact opposite.

"It should be noted that no matter how many variables we try to control for, any testing of a sample size this small can only tell us so much about a problem that's this complex."

There is enough compiled data from multiple sources to safely say there is a difference is battery consumption. Even Apple admits this. The is NOT enough data to confirm how significant the difference may be and under exactly what conditions would it be the most noticeable.

Anandtech, clearly spell out why you cannot even begin to judge based on such a small sampling size due to the 'silicon lottery' that affects all semiconductor manufacturing. They do agree that there is enough composite data to indicate a difference.

http://anandtech.com/show/9708/analyzing-apple-statement-for-tsmc-and-samsung-a9

Well, it's more "controlled" than the crap other people were posting, so at least its a start. Even them only have a minute sampling for their test, so it just gives you a ballpark figure.

seems to me the TSMC owners care more about the whole chip situation then the Samsung owners do.. :p

I'm not particularly inclined to blindly believe that the geekbench test is a true indicator of real world usage as it has the Galaxy S6 near the top of the charts, a phone that in reality has pretty poor battery life, only 3 hours of screen on time seems pretty normal

heh you guys should have tried living with my nexus 5. 50 minutes of screen on time and that was it. I had to ration those 50 minutes every single day, a song started playing I didn't like, well tough, couldn't waste the battery to turn the screen on to change it :(

If anyone is still upset about this, please take a moment to acknowledge how wonderful your life is that you have the energy to get upset over something ultimately so trivial. You do not, and probably never have had, any real problems. Your life is blessed. Someday when you have a real problem, remember to look back at this privileged niggle with your new perspective and reflect on what a whiney little assclown you were.

This.

Because it isn't a problem. The variation you are seeing here isn't any different than what is seen in laptops with Intel or AMD chips in them. You can have significant differences in thermal performance depending upon where on the wafer the chip was cut from.

But if I buy an intel laptop, say a MBA, I compare my MBA to other MBA's, not Lenovo's running AMDs.

Missed the point I was making. If you are an average user, it does not matter what cup u have. And if you are a heavy CPU user, u have a 14 day return period if this bothers you.

Some people like gaming a lot for example.

There are just too many confounding factors. It is completely feasible this TSMC's longer battery life is actually a byproduct of improper throttling (maybe it's generating more heat and throttled down). Of course, we have no way of knowing, but if this were the case, which is the "superior" then..?

At the end of the day, Apple has never been known to design-for-benchmarks. OS X lags Linux on many benchmarks, because the pragmatic OS team focuses on real-world performance, rather than benchmark bragging rights. I can only assume the same philosophy applies across the entire firm.

Because the average person uses their phone for several minutes at a time, and recharges it at least once per day. The people who get bent out of shape are those who need to use their phone for more than 6 consecutive hours, in which they might actually be better off with some kind of extra-battery system. However...

The average person is also buying durability-enhancement cases which ruins the "thinness" of the device, so seems like Apple is ruining the appearance of their devices by virtue of making them too fragile, and people would rather not risk damage to the device. I don't use any kind of protection for my iPad, because I don't need to hold it to my face. But the iPhone is generally held near your face to use it as a phone, or held closer to your face when not used as a music player.

Like I would much rather have a battery that lasts the entire day, not just 8 hours.

Quick Apple PR payment to ArsTechnica and we get this.

P.S - How are people saying this isn't a problem. The one test that constantly pegs the phone, Geekbench, shows around a 30% difference between the two chips. There are times when I can use my phone at full load. If I'm commuting, sitting through something boring and play a demanding game etc.

I won't fall for your attempt for my clickbait. O wait...

Btw, false accusation penalty is a minimum of 5 years prison.

and this scares people ?

its the same on the desktop... slight differences, its tech...

Maybe its because this is the first time it happen on a mobile device

NEWS FLASH! Apple knows the capabilities of a device they built better than a dude who had his hands on it for three hours!

That's like, my whole world on its head there, guys. Just, nothing makes sense anymore.
