This could be great for accessibility.

But for what purpose? I can’t for the life of me imagine a practical use for it. Okay so say you use it to launch an app or a file....then what? You have to ditch the controller for a mouse/keyboard. Just seems a pointless novelty to me. Am I missing something? Feel free to point out a reasonable use case. I’m just not seeing one.

Would this work with this?

I would love to use this to scroll through frames in a timeline on final cut/after-effects/blender/etc but as is it only increases the volume up/down. Build quality is amazing.

Sounds like it's an alternative to 'Enjoyable' (https://yukkurigames.com/enjoyable/) where the focus is on preprogrammed actions/shortcuts instead of a plain mouse/keyboard replacement.

I've been running my Mini under the TV for years now using Enjoyable and a PS4 controller after failing to find a remote control for it that didn't give me fits of rage. The battery life of the controller is pretty short for this use case though.

Wow! This brings back memories of editing a high school newspaper (tabloid size for one edition) on an Apple //c Plus with Publish It! and a joystick. Exact placement took a few tries. I was so happy when I moved up to a mouse! How far we have come since that day! I’m sure this will be useful in ways for some, but I think I’ll stick with my Magic Mice and Trackpads.

I have been exactly same things using USB OverDrive or JoyStick Mapper. Mainly for additional shortcut in PS AI or whatever program I need, have profile for controlling Finder too. Yeah I can navigate Finder with just controller.

Beyond the novelty of doing so...what exactly is the usefulness of this? Do they present any use cases for this functionality.

1) using your Mac as a video player and wanting basic controls from your sofa (worth the cost on its own)
2) if you used your Mac as a gaming rig, and wanted to change some settings using the controller you already had in your hands.
3) as per previous post, people with mobility or visual impairment issues may find this easier.

This reminds me of when I used to move the pointer using the joystick in GeOS on C64, waiting ages to reach the other end of the desktop.

I wonder if you can map the absolute joystick position to a location on the screen and if that would actually be usable...

That's nice and all. Still wish we'd see ControllerMate back on recent macOS versions too. It's just such an amazing software in one package.

When the OP said we don't need it, I'm sure he meant the majority of us don't need it. If someone has a use for this, great. Perhaps the developer could also implement a way to use the controller as a full keyboard. After all, there are way fewer keys on a keyboard than there are moves in Mortal Kombat. So, maybe <back><down><down><square> coud be the letter "m" (in addition to a Scorpion fatality).
Again, why does it matter if the majority don't need it? What if people had that attitude towards computer software design in the 1980's?

If anyone gets value out of something someone else created, then good for them, and good for the person that created it.

This seems to me to be a solution looking for a problem, but for the developer's sake, I hope I'm wrong and there are people out there that want and need this. It's a clever bit of engineering.

What happened - was it retired? Did not see anything posted about the development status post-Mojave on the site.
It's difficult to know since the developer Ken Heglund doesn't seem very communicative as of late. He said on Twitter in October 2019 that a version of ControllerMate that works on Catalina was in the works, but no estimate. Also some comments about things on his personal Twitter – the latest currently from November 2020.

Not sure what's going on. 🤷‍♂️

lol Game controllers are the reason why I play video games on my Mac. I have never been able to figure out how people actually use these things. Hopefully people addicted to their controllers can now control their Mac.

NO. We do not need apps to turn every device into every other device.
This is really useful for a number of purposes and what harm does it do? If you don't want to use it, don't use. I think we need more apps like this as it's especially useful for people with different abilities and motor skills who need use non standard input devices.

That is awesome and inventive! I used to use a controller for my PC a long time ago... and it was just a mouse. Love it!

There's people with special needs who can't easily use traditional input methods.

It could be particularly useful to me as I hook my macs to my tv, sometimes by cable as airplay has a tendency to underscan and there's no way to change it unless hard wired. This would be really useful in that situation, especially when watching films.

Yes, he's not responding on my mail question it seems.
I now bought Controlly, it's ok on Big Sur 11.2, nice

This guy must be a lot of fun at parties. So an app shouldn't exist because... you do not need it?
I've always wanted to control my computer with my controller. Not something I'd use all the time, but it'd be fun.
You're more than welcome to not get the app. Myself, I'm going to buy two copies just to spite you.
