do you know a good windows tool? dont want to spend every night with the **** pc on just because it takes almost a whole day for one stupid episode....

PSP video 9 runs on the PC. All of these tools are just wrappers around ffmpeg. If you are not afraid of a little command line there is no reason you can't just use ffmpeg and avisynth to make h.264 or mpeg-4 for the iPod. I personally don't see what all the fuss with h.264 is right now since ffmpeg's output is mediocre at best right now compared with mpeg-4 at slightly higher resolution.

I could care less about most TV, I'm looking to use the video feature for shorts and other "show off" materal that would be nice to have in my pocket.

i just converted a simple avi with quicktime pro.

took long enough, but the converted h.264 file has a resolution of 300*240, not 320*240...so all persons look a little stretched.

has anybody else experienced this?

that is exactly what I want to know.. it's easier to find a divx film then renting or buying a DVD.. Is there another option to convert divx or xvid files?

Does anyone have an answer for this. I have tons of music videos in divx that I would like to put on my ipod. I am using windows.

I've got Sin City, Dodgeball and Team America World Police on my 60GB iPod (overnight business trip - need something to kill the time on the plane there and back).

Each encoded via Handbrake at 450kbps. They look just great on the iPod's screen (don't care about playing back on a TV). Sin City, which is a bit over 2 hrs. long is a 516MB .mp4 file. And on my 2.5GHz DPG5, it took only about 35 minutes to encode (the compressor in HandBrake is dual-processor aware).

Interesting note - on the iPod, there is an ON/OFF toggle for widescreen video. When on, the widescreen DVDs play as expected on the iPod's screen (i.e., letterboxed). Turning it off will zoom the video to fullscreen (and thus cropping off the sides). Not too useful for 2.35:1 movies as too much is lost when cropped, but certainly reasonable for flicks that are encoded at 16:9 on DVD (The Incredibles comes to mind).

I've successfully ripped a couple of things from handbrake, but a couple of things i've tried haven't shown the whole movie. Little Britain (TV Show) only gave me a few easter eggs to choose from, and Start Wars only gave me a couple of easter eggs, not the whole movie.
So i ripped it in Mac the Ripper, then used ffmepgx to convert to vob file into mp4 mpeg. When I went to play it, Quicktime pops up saying, "Couldn't open the file because an invalid sample description was found in the movie"

anybody offer any help?

qt pro is just out of the question, way to slow!!

I have a lot of trouble with ffmpegx as well...when I am converting avi-files, it some how get's stuck when it reaches 100%...

the file i get is called avi.ff.acc.mp4 and is really small...

can anybody tell me why?
or better, give me a hint for a program which is easier and faster for converting avi to h.246

Let it keep running for a long time after it says 100%. Like a few hours. Then it may complete the job.

yeah, wow... it did, it completed... after 3 hours

well, now that it is working, does anybody know how I have to adjust the settings so I don't end up with this streched picture??

I am using 320x240 as told, but the the pic get's all messed up!
is the secret this "crob" feature??

a tip on this would be so great...

Danny DeVito looks pretty scary that thin, long and streched out :D

What about DIVX .avis and .mpg files?

It seems no one has answered the question as to how to convert DIVX files. (I've also been looking in the other threads...)

Is it not possible to convert .avi files? I've got some old Seinfeld stuff whose files are .avi and whose video format in QT says "3ivx D4 4.5.1".

Handbrake obviously only converts DVD-files, right?

And what about .mpg files which QT doesn't play and only open in MPlayer? Any suggestions for that?

Thanks for any help.

Xilisoft Video Converter

Hey, I personally find Xilisoft Video Converter the best. its faster then videora and much quicker then QT pro. you honestly need to try it, its awesome:) :) I just added some music videos that was originally a WMV done in 3 minutes.:D

THIS IS ABOUT .AVI, NOT DVD!!!

ok, I think I tried everything now with ffmpegx!

the only way that works is to convert it to h.264...

encoding to mpeg-4 was eather streched and vlc played it or was not watchable!

but here is my struggle, I want to play my avi-movies on TV and everybody tells me mpeg-4.mov is the way to go ...

Is that so hard?? please give me a hand here...

the only thing that bugs with handbrake is that sometimes it rips it with the movie commentary....it saddens me...

It did that on the first DVD I ripped because I changed the audio track within Handbrake. I've left it alone ever since, and all is well with the world. I believe that as long as you don't mess with the audio track, it should rip the main track, which is (almost?) always the one without the commentary.

rip Chapters?

Does anyone know how to keep the chapters of the DVD in the rip? It would be nice to be able to skip through the chapters instead of forwarding. I'm using handbrake and haven't figured it out.

Greetings all

I just got my iPod Video version and I have to say that its great and I love it as much as my very first iPod.

Why are they Windows users here? Thats weird! :)

I want to convert my music videos to play on my iPod the perfect application.

I used QTpro to convert a mpg to the iPod mpg4, but the audio was missing.

Can someone please explain why and how to fix this.

Thanks!

Don't windows users have there own websites that talk about iPods that work with DING DING windows and use DING DING Windows applications.

Ding Dong :)

Does Handbrake have a end button or something when its done encoding.
Cause mine just sits there after the ETA read 0's

And my options are pause or cancel!

I was a member of Mac Rumors for Several Months before I bought my mac. I knew they were going to update the iMac, so I didn't want to buy one, so naturally I had to log on to this site everyday to find out when I would be able to buy my first Apple Computer! :p (I've never been happier)
