$299 is cheap for what this product is offering.
The 64 GB version (not much) costs 400 US$. For this price (street price), i can buy a Galaxy Note 1 or in a few months a Galaxy Note 2 (Wolfson audio chip). And no, it is not like a tablet (see youtube). As a PDA, the new iPod touch is a bit useless without GPS/Google Maps. If you want an internet connection, you need your own (mobile) WiFi-hotspot-device (around 100 US$). So you need at least two devices, which cost together around 500 US$. Combine this with the fact, that the iPod touch 5G does not play 720p files without downscaling and that the iPod touch does not support standard file formats like FLAC and MKV or CoDecs like VC-1 and VP8. The only good thing i see in the new iPod touch is the IPS-display.

They are greedy, because I am sure a 16GB model will be available in 6 month time, and there is no reason not to release it now.

I don't actually need the 32GB model, and I'm sure many people are like me. So they are just milking the cow as long as they can. :(

Instead of whining about a successful company and its alleged "greed," why not devote your energy to creating a better product than Apple's so you can sell it at a lower price?

Ok, so, we finally have a revamped, renewed, brand spanking new ipod touch about to hit the market and several of the postings in this forum are negative towards the product. In lieu of the negative opinions here, I know there are a lot of folks excited about the new release however, I am shocked to see all the negativity!

Ok, people cried about a new camera, it has a 5mp 1080p rear and HD (720p) front... We wanted a new processor, it is now running the A5 dual processor... We wanted a higher resolution screen and now it is a true Retina display... We wanted SIRI and we have it now! WTH??? I think Apple could have created a technology to have it touchless, using your thoughts to interact with the device and folks would complain...

Sorry, just had to get it off my chest and I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion... But be happy Apple didn't decide to give us another minor revamp of the 4g model... In the "horrible" colors they are releasing for the 5g.

People do complain because back in the iPhone 3G/3GS/4 times the then-current iPt models weren't dumbed-down versions of the then-current iPhone models. Actually, both the 2G and the 3G iPt had considerably faster hardware than the iPhone 3G and 3GS, respectively.

It was starting in 2011 and by seriously dumbing down the (in 2011, not-)released new iPt that Apple started to "phase out" iPt's by making them seriously inferior to the current iPhones, CPU-wise too. (Screen-wise, they started this in 2010 - see the differences between the IPS-equipped iPhone 4 an dthe non-IPS iPt4).

In other words, if you're selective with requirements; if you tack on $100 for spurious reasons; if you ignore things like OS integration and interface then yes, it does appear that the new iPod is not worth it! The lack of VP8 codec is a huge killer, what was Apple thinking?

. :(

What makes you think they are going to make a 16GB model? Apple has never released a smaller capacity product later down the road. Storage capacity needs only increase, especially with more apps supporting retina (which requires more storage space).

If you want a cheaper option, get an 8GB 4th gen. Still a good product.

think thats bad? it starts at 249 in the uk. thats over 400 dollars.

But UK price includes 20% VAT, whereas US price is stated without any sales tax. So without VAT it would £207, which is nearer $330, so yes still a difference but not as great

Not as stupid as whining about "corporate greed" because you don't like the price of something or don't want the model that's offered.

I am not whining about corporate greed, I am only pointing it out as a fact. Name me one fortune 500 company that is not greedy. We just have to accept the fact they are all just as bad.

I don't care, because I am an Apple share holder. :D

Luckily we have choices. If you think the iPod Touch price is a rip off, you can get the Samsung Galaxy 5, or the Creative Zen Touch.

If you can buy an official international unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for $400, then I must have seriously been ripped off because I paid $749 plus tax which came to a total of $811 to get my Note 2 by the end of this week. The Note 2 has been released in Korea and India for an unlocked price of about $754. I did not want to wait until November (which is when the Note 2 will come to the U.S.) and I did not want the phone to be on a contract. With 2 GB RAM, 1.6 GHZ QUAD core processor, AirView, and several other impressive qualities; the Note 2 was well worth the $749 price tag to me. Now is the iPod Touch 5G worth the $299? Probably not. Will I still buy it? Yes, because I love what they have done to it and although I would not use it nearly as much as my phone; I would love to have an Android device, an ios device, and a windows device to get the best of everything. Windows has always gone to my laptop and that will never change. I prefer Samsung for my phones and that will also likely never change (although I do secretly love the new Nokia Lumia, but Windows has to go to my computing system). The iPad seems unnecessary for me to have because I have a laptop and there are many new laptop/tablet hybrids that will be released this year. So the iPod Touch is the only device that makes sense as my ios device and I cannot wait until it comes to the stores. Are there better devices that does more than the new iPod Touch and is the same price or cheaper? Of course! However, those devices do not necessarily have to meet the needs of everyone. So to each his/her own. I just wanted to emphasize that the Note 2 unlocked is definitely NOT $400. They might as well just give it out for free instead. :)

Well I've been really satisfied with my 4th gen touch so having a 4in screen and flash along with a performance bump will me very happy to get my pre order in my greedy hands. Just my 2 cents...

Yeah yeah yeah, we get it. People with realistic expectations are making it hard for you to be an Apple fanboy.

I dont really care for the new camera they jammed into it. I like the new design, no doubt, i would have sacrificed the new camera for the A5x or the A6 chip

Since the 3rd gen, Apple always releases just the 32Gb and 64Gb for a new design while keeping the entry level as the previous design. The next year after the new release, the 32Gb and 64Gb only get minor changes while the entry level is updated to the current design (i.e. next year, the 16Gb A4 will be updated to the A5).

Apple will make a 16Gb A5 (new design) but you will have to wait at least until next October.

It's very simple:
I am upset because the least expensive model is already way too expensive.

It's like anything else in life, you can choose not to buy. Apple prices their products to maximize profits (not sales).

The least expensive model is no more expensive than the previous generation model of comparable capacity. The 4th Gen 32GB iPod Touch has been $299 (until the 5th gen was announced). The 5th Gen 32GB iPod Touch is $299. Same capacity, same price, significantly improved hardware.

You are obviously entitled to your opinion and emotions, but they don't really reflect the facts... unless you are simply looking at price and nothing else.

Seriously, by both your answers to me: are you kidding me or just plain stupid?

Either you pretend not to see my point or your fanboyism has damaged your capacity of thinking.

What I meant was: If I wanted to buy a 4th Gen iPod Touch without spending too much I could buy the 8GB version (now the 16GB) for $200. Now, if I want to have a 5th gen iPod Touch I need to buy at least the 32GB model which is expensive.

I really wouldn't bother answering your iSheep statement but you really managed to annoy me, twice.

Um, excuse me but I'm no fanboy! I can objectively see ALL good products from different companies... Not just Apple. I'm just making an observation about how Apple finally "appeared" to listen to the complaints of the last model (4g) and gave a significant update to the ipod touch. If you like it, great... If not, great... Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Btw, I don't own an iphone, but a Droid Bionic... ipod touch is my music machine.
