I'll be flamed by this but as a supervisor on numerous hiring committees for a federal agency, applicants with visible tattoos and/or piercings on a male (extreme piercings on a female) are immediately round-filed. YMMV. I'm not saying it's right and I don't personally agree with it (have tattoos myself) but it's how it is.

This is a big reason why I do not want to wait. I still have at least 2 years untill I can actually get employed.

I can't believe this thread is into page two and not a damned person has asked anjinhamarota where her piercings are.

...and asked for pictures :p

OP, I just don't think it's worth it. You say you would only have them in for 2 years until you have to get a job, so why bother? 2 years isn't a long time and IMO if you're going to go through all this trouble it might as well be something you keep for life.

Absolutely not OP. For the same reason I wouldn't let a 14 year old get a tatt sleeve. You have your whole life to let your ears make you entirely less employable. What if they don't go back to "normal"?

Now go clean your room!

I've heard that if you go all the way to the larger sizes, you know the quarter size ones, that if/when you eventually have them taken out they actually clip off the lobe and sew the remaining tissue back together. Any truth to that? I really don't see the appeal personally, but I do see it quite often. <shrugs>

I had an ear and my tongue pierced. Both have been removed since. Granted I didn't get anything large but... a basic piercing is maybe fine but anything large isn't worth it in the long run if you plan on getting a customer facing or "have to dress nice job". I'm not really biased towards people with piercings but a piercing you could have a flea circus use as a "flaming hoop of death" just won't fly in most professions.

True. But I would like to make them less employable while I wouldn't even be able to be employed.

Hmm. Not sure about that. But I never will go past that point.

This is one of the reasons to why not. It isn't fair to compare with a tattoo. As long as it doesn't get out of hand, you can always take them out or go back.

Is there new laws requiring you to be 18 before you can take crappy jobs that might discriminate against people with excessive tats/piercings? I was 16 only 9 years ago and I was able to get a ****** convenient store job and buy a car to go to college in, maybe things have changed since then.

Parents seem more rational the older you get. Funny thing is they don't change...you do.

Indeed!

To the offspring of an "irrational" mother - first off, I would try not thinking of them as irrational. Their parental intentions are good. Believe me, things I thought were an awesome idea as a teenager are now just "stupid things I did as a teenager." I bare the tiny puncture scars to prove it. (I took out my piercings. I'm glad I never did the stretching thing.)

Now here's the bit you probably DO want to hear. I talked my mother into not only letting me get piercings but driving me to get them (I was 14, so no car yet) and helping me pay. How? I said that I was going to do it anyway but I would prefer to get it done at a reputable place and those places like parental consent. She knew I wasn't bluffing so she took me somewhere nice, rather than have me show up after an unfortunate trip to Venice Beach or something. I got a few other piercings in more or less the same way. Fortunately for me, my mother is pretty easygoing and allowed me the freedom to express myself. I like that she did that because now I can only blame myself for being an ass.

Good luck. If you get the piercings, get them done right and care for them properly.

I've had quite a few piercings (grown out now - no gauges) and don't regret them at all. Thought it would rile my folks up but when I got my first. But my father pulled out his photos of himself at the same age and he had had his done too. Took the wind out of my rebellion :(.

p.s. didn't read thread properly but I agree with iBlue. Get them done professionally but I'll add the caveat that don't let anyone go near you with a piercing gun. Needles are the best. They do far less damage to your tissue and heal much better.

*steps away from thread* :p

Well you've mentioned them before, if my memory serves me correctly. I guess some of us either weren't here then, didn't read the post(s) in question, or lack a highly tuned and organizational mind. :)

Bingo! And it's not just federal. Conscious or subconscious, wild or 'extreme' piercings or tattoos can create major problems for you in the workforce.

Consider whether or not your piercing or tattoo is worth slashing your future salary potential in half (or more)!

I guess saying irrational is a bit harsh. More like stubborn. And I have offered to pay for everything to convince her but no good. :(

Haha, I guess you could say a very, very small part of me is doing it to be rebellious . But is eclipsed by actual reasons :p.

And about the piercing gun, I don't think there is a place that uses hollow needles. Maybe a tattoo place. If I can get the go ahead from my parents I'll have to call around. But I really don't want to use the gun. Especially after reading about how bad it could turn out.

It's not. Which is the exact reason why I will take them out before I get a job.

Simple! In two ways!

"Convincing an irrational mother to get a piercing"

- Mother, you gotta have one, it's so cool! (This is the logical method.)

- Woman, it's either me or you, but one of us is getting a fricking piercing! (Fight the logic of this one!)
